I felt the same and as I start getting back into it I started with some Tom Daniels Monogram cars. Basically working on painting and clean assembly right now. I do aspire to giving some of these guys a run for their money but that isn't today or tomorrow. I know I can will get better but it takes practice.
So Mark
The plan is.......
1. Train to Mineola
2. Willis Hobby
3. Retro cool diner
4. Hilldebrandts for ice cream and then and only then go back to Manhattan
5. Take the Staten Island Ferry for free and get a really nice boat ride past the Statue of Liberty for FREE!
John I was hoping you'd pop in.....
There might still be that old school diner on the corner by it too. One of those old stainless steel ones. But it's probably gone. My Grandmother lived in Williston Park up until she died so I got to know a lot of it. If you do go to the hobby shop go to Hilldebrandts on Hillside Ave for an ice cream. It was featured on Diners Drive-ins and Dives. I used to go there a lot cuz Grandma lived a block away!

Maybe a local member can chime in on this as I haven't been there in years. Bad news it's a 20 minute train ride from Manhattan. Good news is you can probably walk to it from the train station. It is an "Old time hobby shop" Heavy on trains from what I remember
I guess you can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
That's beautiful James. I always thought all the '59 GM cars were great looking
BTW James you live close to me.
Since I'm kinda new to this here's my take FWIW
I'm no expert but couldn't you use a font on decal paper hit it with some gold leaf, seal it and use it that way? I imagine someone makes those kind of decals too although I haven't looked myself.
How about using a bead blast cabinet and tweaking it? They are fairly inexpensive and sealed. All you would need would be the blower, some filters and ducting to the outside.
