It was originally titled "Cap's Hobby Center". The idea to ask readers to submit their hobby tips arose from the fact that DC Comics featured a lot of ads from model companies and would be a great way to promote the advertisers.
Greg Myers Posted December 7, 2017 Posted December 7, 2017 Great feature with a bunch of great ideas. Tim Boyd's articles. "Modeler's Corner" from Street Rodder magazine were pretty cool too. It would be nice to see them all published in a book.
cobraman Posted December 7, 2017 Posted December 7, 2017 I never saw them either. Was it ever a good idea to put the glue in a straw ?

Ya know I was just wondering that too...what's gonna keep the glue from melting the straw and making an even bigger mess than whatever bulky glue applicator is being referenced.
Greg Myers Posted December 7, 2017 Posted December 7, 2017 straws were made of rolled paper back then.
unclescott58 Posted December 7, 2017 Author Posted December 7, 2017 These all appeared in DC (National) Comics in the mid-to-late 60's. I can not vouch or take responsibility for following any of the above tips. The glue in the straw one is questionable to me too. There was another one I wish I could find, about using an old tooth brush, pulling out several rows of bristles, and then using it painting stripes on your model. I question validity of that one too. There were others on improving slot cars performance, and other non model car hobby tips in the series too. Most of them seemed pretty good overall.

Uh, plastic straws were specifically mentioned in that particular hint; and, they were around in the technologically primitive 1960s. Edited December 7, 2017 by SfanGoch
jaymcminn Posted December 7, 2017 Posted December 7, 2017 I thought they whittled straws out of wood back then... but seriously, the big blob of glue on the hood there makes the straw look like it might not be the best tool for the job.
Richard Bartrop Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 I remember these back in the day. Thanks for sharing!

Plastic coffee stirrers would work better. They were around back in them dark ages.Their small diameter is perfect for applying tube glue in precise amounts. We kids got them from Sloppy Joe's Coffee Shop and used them in class for different art class projects when we weren't carving gats out bars of Ivory Snow soap. Who do I see about collecting the five bucks? Edited December 8, 2017 by SfanGoch
DumpyDan Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Thanks Scott, this is awesome, love it. Never new any of this existed
