Your Very First Real Car

Recommended Posts

Enough of 2012, what was your very first real car?

Here's a picture of mine. It's a 1972 Honda Z Coupe, one of the first few cars Honda bought into the USA. My Dad found this for me when I was around 13-14 years old. At that time, we weren't sure how tall I was going to get and this car suited me just fine!

When we first got it, it was an ugly rusted orange, and gave it new life. We gave it this custom Domino's Pizza Racer look and had the upholstery done up to match. We even gave it a cool duel-exaust system on it. It was a fun little car and I had it for the longest time. I think it was one of the few we traded in for the Insight.

1966 Olds Cutlass 4-door. It had a factory Hurst floor shifter for the three speed manual, and no radio. I got it when I was 13 (1996), and ended up unloading it about four or five years later, when I got a '71 Charger that ended up being too far gone to save. A buddy bought the Cutlass, then drilled it into a guardrail shortly thereafter. It still sits behind his shop, all twisted and mangled. Main reason I don't stop by his place much these days.

The first car I had that I actually drove (legally) was an '81 Lincoln Town car that met an unfortunate end... like most of my vehicles since! B)

And yes! There DOES EXIST a 1/32 scale plastic model kit of my old 72. I forget who makes the kit, but it's available! In fact, my local hobby shop has one and I'm thinking of picking it up this week. Might be perfect size for my 1/43 scale RC car! Won't know till I try it out!

It was a little fast for its size yes. I even had a lowering kit for the old thing but never had the chance to put it on. I was considering stuffing a more powerful motorcycle engine in there and make it more racy!

If I ever did have any pictures of my first real car, they're long gone by now......it was back in 1970, I was 15, and it was a 1957 Chevy BelAire 2 dr hardtop. 283 2 barrel automatic, Gave $150 for it. Worked on it all winter so it would be ready on my 16th birthday....painted it fire-engine red, put a set of American mags on it......it didn't look too bad, but the interior was pretty much a snake hazard. Drove it for a couple of months, till I bought a '67 Mustang, and traded the Chevy for a Honda 250 motorcycle.

I don't have any photos of the actual car anymore, but this one is pretty much just like it, except my interior was dark blue and it had plain old steel wheels. But the body color is the same. This one is a '66, mine was a '67. The only difference between the two years was that on the '66 the inner lights were turn signals, while on the '67 they were the high beams and the turn signals went to the bumper...

I got it when it was 10 years old and had over 100,000 miles on it. I drove it for a few years and finally sold it and bought a Nova SS.

In 1971, the year I got my driver's license and turned 16, I bought this '65 Chevy Impala for $350.00. It had the factory 327-300hp motor with 4bbl and Muncie 4-speed. I put on a set of chrome slot wheels with G-60s in back and Walker glass packs. Not too shabby for a kid in 11th grade working at Howard Johnson's!:D;) Here she is, and I'd love to have it back!

Actually count two as my first... first was a 57 210 two door sedan, passed to by brother and me by my dad's dad. had it until last year when I passed it to my oldest son.

Second ( first that I actually bought) was a '66 SS 396 Chevelle whose 396 was looonng gone. Had a 350 when I got it.

Had owned it about 6 months when one of the guys at work saw a couple of pics,

said it looked like a car he had bought new in '66 and raced from day one...

long story short it did turn out to be his old ride (class champ a couple of years at

Smoky Mountain Dragway...

Man wish I still had it too!!!

Well...mine was a 1983 Pontiac 1000 (basically a Chevette with more black trim). Light Blue metallic with no A/C and only an AM/FM radio. I painted the steel wheels black and had stainless steel trim rings.

Though I was over 6 foot tall then, I sat fairly comfortably. I still didn't mind driving it for the 2 & a half years that I owned it...she served me well. Surprisingly good in snow too!

I LOVE '50 MERC'S.

This is a model of my first car I bought when I was in high school, in 1960 - a '50 Merc.

I built the flat head with all the goodies and blew it up.

A mailman friend who drove a '41 Willys with a '57 Hemi in it was really into the "HEMI THING", and offered me an early Hemi, 1953 for $30.00. My dad said it was O.K., and later I bought a '55 Chrysler 300 dual quad set-up from the same guy - John McNown.

Wheels and tires came from PEP BOYS in SoCal.

My sis has the pic's.

I did a mild custom job on the body and painted it myself.

A year later it was on the road and racin' - EEEHA

My Sister recently discovered this picture of my first car. The picture was taken December 25, 1975. I was four months from getting my driver's license. The Chevelle was owned by a neighbor and featured a new paint job and a rebuilt 325 horse 396. It was a base model SS with manual steering, Muncie 3 speed stick and a bench seat interior. It was a fun first car but we got rid of it in the summer of 1976 after the bondo-filled quarter panel that the fresh paint covered began to crack. The kid that bought it from us totaled it two months later.

Like most everyone else, I sure wish I owned this car today.

My first car... 1963 Chevy Nova with the straight six. Dad & I fixed it up, paid a guy $300. to paint it. I found out weeks later that "Nitro-Stan" putty wasn't the same thing as body filler! I remember the cracks from shrinkage of the lacquer putty on top of the fenders.

Nice car. The big tires on the back were borrowed from a friend.

Guest Mustang3.8

My first and current car. A rare 1983 Ford Mustang GL with a 3.8L V6, rack and pinion steering, rear wheel drive, posi-trac. She's got 194,000 kms. I paid $400. I've had her for 4 years now.

My first car was an '84 Ford Escort diesel, 5dr w/ 5spd manual. But it was one of my folks cars, so I shared it w/ them my junior year in high school until I got my first new car, an '87 Mustang GT--5.0 w/ 5spd manual, which I still have 22 years later...has only 63k miles. My college car was an '86 Mustang LX 2.3 sedan w/ 4spd manual, since the GT was too nice to let sit outside at college in Ohio. The LX was totaled a few years later when I moved to Michigan for grad school, replaced by an '88 Bronco II XLT 4x4, my first SUV.

Here's a pic of the '86 and '87 Mustangs together around 1990.

Rob, your '87 GT looks alot like my first Mustang which was an '87 GT as well. not my "first" car, but my first Mustang and the one that started my love affair for the 5.0

Dave

Sweet...looks like it could be the same color..Medium Canyon Red? I've kept mine bone stock except for replacing the factory AM/FM casette w/ a Sony AM/FM CD player... thinking about getting an '11 GT convertible ('11 is when the new Coyote 5.0 engine will be available) to go with it...for my midlife crisis car.. :)

I don't have photos, but my first car was a 1965 Corvair Monza convertible, bought in 1970 for $700! GM had just stopped making Corvairs, so they were cheap on the used car market. Mine was white with a red interior and black top. It had the factory wire wheel covers with fake knock off spinners. I sheared one off on a high curb once (######!). It had the 4 carb 140 HP engine, but had that crappy 2 speed Powerglide automatic. The shift lever was on the dashboard. No "park" position - you had to use the parking brake all the time! The heater (if you can call it that) blew smoke that smelled of burnt oil into the inside. I often rolled a window down a few inches while driving with the heater on! Still, it was a cool ride back then, and I loved it! I built a model of it from a 1969 kit back then. I cut the top off of a coupe to make it, and used a boot from some other model. I still have the model (falling apart!).
