Harry P. Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 I've had to move a ton of topics out of the "Tips, Tricks and Tutorials" section... and there are plenty more I haven't gotten to yet. Like it says, the "Tips, Tricks and Tutorials" section is for posting your tips, tricks and tutorials! It is NOT for posting questions about "how do I do this?" and "how do I do that?" If you have a question about how to do something, ask it in either the "General" section or the "Ask Model Cars a Question" section. Edit: Maybe we should add a new section... "How Do I....?"
62rebel Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 good point, Harry; folks could either refer them to the thread they need or answer them directly.
Harry P. Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 I'm just trying to keep this place organized. We break things down into categories for a reason: to make it easy for you guys to find what you are interested in. If people post anything anywhere, what's the point of having separate categories? We'd be like the Spotlight Hobbies board... chaos.

Harry, I WAS going to make a topic that would make a point about that, but never got around to it. Honestly, it annoys me when I click on something thinking it's a tutorial, but it turns out to be a question.
charlie8575 Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 I'll play devil's advocate. I think Tips, Tricks and Tutorials is the best place to post the questions. From the questions, the tips, tricks and tutorials come. If I ask how to make/do/fabricate something, answers are returned, along with (usually) an explanation and some type of quick how-to. What might be a good idea might be to take Tips, Tricks and Tutorials, and divide it into two sub-sections. One might be for information sought, i.e., "How do I...?," with the question/answer in one thread. The other section would be for advice freely offered without any prompt. Charlie Larkin

Overall, we really need to rework the category breakdowns we currently have. Some of them can be eliminated or combined. I like the idea of a new, separate section called "Modeling Q&A" or something like that... with the two sub-categories– "How Do I...?" and "Tips, Tricks and Techniques." That seems to make good sense.
Foxer Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 I am guilty of posting questions in the tips category simply because when the helpful modelers here ALWAYS answer, it becomes a tip. Having two categories just seems redundant.
Erik Smith Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 I support adding a "how do I" section. The "tips" section is cluttered with too many topics. Thanks for taking on the moving/editing.
Kit Basher Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 As a relative newbie, let me explain how I interpreted the sections. "General" seemed like really general stuff, like hockey teams and bad drivers. I thought "Ask Model Cars" was for questions about the magazine or its contents. I posted modeling questions in "Tips, Tricks" because it seemed like that was where most questions were. Maybe if "Ask Model Cars" was renamed, like "Modeling Questions" and moved up in the order near "Tips, Tricks", it would be more obvious what to do. Thanks for your efforts, Harry, I will change my ways.

I think losing the "Ask Model Cars" section and instead having a section called "Modeling Q&A" with two sub-sections ("How Do I...?" and "Tips, Tricks and Tutorials" makes the most sense. It'll put all the questions and answers in one easy to find place, and "General" can be used for all the other important stuff (like hockey and favorite songs)... Now the trick is to get Gregg to actually make the change!
Mr. Moparman Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Gregg! We need you in in aisle "Forum Re-rganizing"!

Why so defensive? If you like it there, more power to you. I was there once, saw how it operates, decided I didn't like the randomness and lack of organization, and never went back. I don't "troll" there; I don't monitor (or care) what goes on there or who says what there. If people there are busy bashing this forum, I really couldn't care less. What gets said there isn't any of my concern... this forum is the one I care about. I just mentioned them as an example of the type of forum that I don't want this place to become like.

I suppose he could have left out the chaos remark since some people can figure out the board okay enough, but I do agree that a board that's as disorganized (or rather not organized) like Spotlight is, is something that we don't want here simply because of how difficult it is to find certain subjects.
Danno Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 I thought the "General" section was (1) only for officers above Colonel rank, but I was never certain about whether Admirals could hang out there, or, (2) only for orange Chargers with welded doors and roofs that cannot be posted on 'that other board' alongside the swastikas and rising suns that are okay on their sister board.

Agent G Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Admirals are considered "flag rank", therefore the equal of a General Officer in the Army or Air Force. They are not the equal of any United States Marine Corps Officer. Semper Fidelis G
Agent G Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Yes it does, however we are the "Men's Department" of the Navy. As soon as we perfect walking on water we won't need those pesky ships. G
hellonwheelz3 Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I've gotta agree with Charlie and some others. I have posted questions both in the General section and in the "tips, tricks and tutorials" section. I usually get much more help in the latter section. I do like the idea of having a "how do i..." section for us newbies!
bigmikevee Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Hey Gang, I personally have asked a ton of questions in the tips, tricks, etc. for a couple of reasons. First, the folks that want to share ideas and always volunteer good information seem to spend a lot of time there, and also to make sure the answers to my questions can be seen in that forum. Makes sense to me, if it gets changed, that would be for the better. And changing to a Q & A isn't very hard at all if the powers that be want it to happen. Here. $.02 Mike
