Dragline Posted February 11, 2018 Share Posted February 11, 2018 My car had been slowly losing coolant over the last several weeks. I thought I had a bad hose and figured I'd get it when the weather broke. Then it took 2 gallons of coolant to get to work [23 miles] Thursday. Water pump went bad and I guess the first clue was standing on the side of the road and seeing the passenger side wheel and splash guard completely covered in anti freeze. Since I was working I had the kid in the garage next door have a go and he did brilliantly. I paid him 35.00 an hour for two hours work and i got to drive instead of wrench. i could get used to this. Last year it overheated due to a blown top hose and I had to do the head gasket out back of where I work. While tools were available, it was a PITA nonetheless. I've owned the car for 13 years and since I have no car payments I have repair bills instead. The good thing is most of it is new and should be good for some time. The weather in the winter especially can best be described as Brutal. That is why I'm FROM there. Not as many two legged models showing off the cars as in previous years and it seems like the show doesn't have the "wow factor" that was evident in the past either. Worked well when my daughter was born and I worked days and my better half worked nights. Gotta keep the money rollin' in to keep up with the bills. A snowplow was coming West creating its own blizzard. A transport was following the snow plow and moved over to see. My daughter was there. Another truck was following her. When he saw her taillights come on he stood on the brakes and pulled to the right. The snow plow pulled to his right when he saw the transport behind him who swerved to get back in his lane and started sliding sideways. The whole thing came to a stop in a huddle without anyone hitting anything with my daughter in her Wrangler in the middle of the huddle. That would please me also, and your daughter is a very lucky person and should know that someone was watching over her. I'm not talkin' about the truckers either. This is the band that made me want to start playing guitar 30 years ago. I've seen them a dozen times or so over the years, and they never fail to impress me. Hope the motor starts tomorrow. I've done a few carb rebuilds back in the 60's & early 70's. Did you soak the parts in white gas or did you use something else? 10thumbs Posted February 21, 2018 Share Posted February 21, 2018 Hi Nick, the carb was from a young motor that was sitting for several years. I rebuilt this motor (performance parts and more cubes) and placed it in a good vehicle, using the original induction for ease. Everything worked out fine. Meantime, the electric choke went south, and the old carb parts are rare. So, I looked at the carb that was in the basket. Dry as a bone, slight residue, and even some junky stuff in the jets. Diesel juice works, as well as brake cleaner. Cleans well, and I don't have to worry that slides are too clean that they can't move anymore. Washes away with when the good stuff goes through. Outside is freezing temps, in a couple of days it'll get well below zero. The big cold is coming. I choose to stay warm for a while. The successful breakdown and renewal made me happy.
