Lovefordgalaxie Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Early last week I started building a old issue (just after the Dick Tracy) 1936 Ford Five Window. I'm having almost zero modeling time, but managed to compensate this May First, as I didn't have to work. My friend Mike Permanian is also building a '36, and I think he gave me the push to start this kit. I almost gave out right on the start, ans the five window roof was bent, and didn't want to align with the body at all. Since the five window door is a lot shorter than the roadster or the three window body, there is a nasty seam just behind it to be smoothed down and filled. 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr This is my first attempt at blending the top to the body. getting the side stamped trim on the "sheetmetal" right was a major problem after all the super glue I used as filler. 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr Also deepened the door lines. 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr Now it's more like it. 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr Mocking up the body. Just painted the body parts with custom mixed automotive enamel on a stock FoMoCo color: 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7313/14085542084_13a770628f_c.jpg1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr
jsc Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Lookin' good! Great job on the door lines. What did you use to make them deeper, and keep them clean at the same time?
geetee66 Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I like this kit, despite the body needing a bit of massaging to get everything to line-up. I liked it so much, that I bought a 2nd kit of this (Both were Dick Tracy kits) I chopped the roof on mine, then discovered Jimmy Flintstone sells a chopped body. The PE set for this kit works well. I'd recommend it. If you do use it, you might find the grille easier to install if you smooth down the front of the kit grille, paint it matt black, then apply the PE grille directly to the kit piece. It helps with the curvature. The paint finish you have achieved is remarkable, considering you haven't polished it yet...
Modlbldr Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I'm going to love this. It is one of my favorite Ford body styles and knowing your building skills, it will be outstanding. Later-
Lovefordgalaxie Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 Thanks guys!! Like I used automotive enamel, the body is almost dry enough to polish, but I want to finish the chassis first. Today I plan on gluing the engine halves ans sanding the seam, then to sand some injection marks on the frame itself. Also plan to paint some whitewalls on two sets of AMT Firestones, the one that came with this kit, and the set that came with my last build, the 1932 Ford. Will post pictures latter!!! Lookin' good! Great job on the door lines. What did you use to make them deeper, and keep them clean at the same time? I just used my exacto knife. Used the rear side of the blade to slowly cut the lines deeper.
drifterdon Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Loving this build. Have one in the stash ready for a stock build. I like your painting rig for holding all the parts while you paint the main color. How do have the parts held on? Masking tape? Clay? Glue? Just curious as it looks like a neat way of gathering everything together when the paint can or airbrush is in use.
superbike-shaun Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 MR lovefordgalaxie, as always I know this is gonna turn out supercool! cant wait!!!!!!!!! shaun.s

Ace-Garageguy Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Very nice job on fitting and filling that top. That's the one area where most builds of this and the other '36 Ford kits go awry, and usually ruin an otherwise nice model. Your work getting it to look like a one-piece molded part, and your paintwork, really set this one apart from the crowd.
Lovefordgalaxie Posted May 3, 2014 Author Posted May 3, 2014 What I did since last time: I'm dealing with the flash monster. My kit came with a really big amount of flash. I have the engine ready for paint, but still have to work on the frame parts. Also removed all body colored parts from the supports, polished the body itself, painted the whitewalls on the tires and assembled the tire/wheel assemblies. Polishing the body took me a LOT of time. Lot's of separate parts, and lot's of spots where going through the paint would be easy. Had to be very careful. On the photo etched detail sets, I won't be using any, just the kit's parts. 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr
drifterdon Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Another masterpiece in the works! You got this one Tulio.
moparfarmer Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Super job on the mounting of the roof piece..That paint job is to die for, what kind/brand of paint and did you airbrush or can the paint..Polish job is excellent..This old Ford is going to be KILLER
Lovefordgalaxie Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 Thanks a lot guys!!! I was planning to get this car finished by early next week, but will have to fix my 1:1 car tomorrow... Well, will try to find some time during the week. Super job on the mounting of the roof piece..That paint job is to die for, what kind/brand of paint and did you airbrush or can the paint..Polish job is excellent..This old Ford is going to be KILLER The paint is synthetic enamel, mixed by my friend Acácio, that owns a paint shop. He has a computer program, that has the formulas of about every paint color ever made. You just have to know the correct name and the original paint manufacturer. His paints are mixed with Sherwin Williams basic colors. He also puts paint on cans, but those are more intended for large areas and don't work well on models, so, I airbrushed the paint with my Badger 350 (really don't like double action airbrushes for body painting). Believe you or not, I regulate the airbrush to give me a spray pattern more or less like a Tamiya spray can, and this is the way I shoot paint. A lot of paint. 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr
Lovefordgalaxie Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 Oh, about the inspiration for the color, anybody remembers the movie "Maxie"?
Lovefordgalaxie Posted May 10, 2014 Author Posted May 10, 2014 Hi guys!! Finally, after a week without touching the Ford, I got into the build again yesterday, and it was the right move, because today it just started to rain cats and dogs, and I don't like to paint when it's raining. To paint the frame, first I assembled the front suspension. I would had assembled the rear too, but the molded in exhaust have to be detail painted, so I painted the rear end separately. Also painted all the upholstery, the dash, the engine, radiator, and all small parts. The hardest was to mask the body to paint the running boards and the roof insert. Now all I have to do is the detail painting, that takes a while, and the final assembly. 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr 1936 Ford Coupe WIP by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr
