Detailing & Why
blunc replied to MoparWoman Jamie's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think this dead horse has been beaten before, there will be a few responses that don't add detail, some that only build for fun (your version of "fun" may vary), some that build for contests and some that don't. Nothing will have changed with the exception that a new forum member may chime in or be scared off by the fractious nature of this topic. I'm gonna go see what kennb has whipped up now... -
I too would be disappointed if you decided to quit posting your work and leave the forum.

A very nice looking TIred Rabbit. I have a 1:1 '63 TR4 that will get built in 1/32 scale due to a lack of 1/25 scale kits.

that green looks real close. I suppose if I was trying this I would have used a metallic green for undercoat then a jade green candy with no metal flake in it.

nice work on the interior.

Detailing & Why
blunc replied to MoparWoman Jamie's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I like to have detailed models, mainly because I'm in the same group as Harry and the other "realistic" model builders (though surrealistic modeling is a great outlet and many levels of detail can be added to fanciful models...much respects to Ira and his out-of-this-world creations) and I like to have functional details where possible given the particular scale of the subject. However, I'm picky with regard to all aspects of the detailing need to be in proper "realistic" proportion to the rest of the build. regarding other builders detailing.... if I take the time to mention that a detail that has been performed on a build is incorrect or incomplete, it's not that I'm trying to disparage(or cut down) a build...I'm making an attempt to educate just in case the builder doesn't know what has been missed. Like a few other builders here, I have real-world experience with cars, but I'm not expert on everything so I tip my hat to the ones that have more experience than I and will gladly receive education from those that know more than I do. -
I can neither confirm nor deny that I searched all of Russia for this car.

a little thread-necro happening....

hmmm, can't seem to find any records of Ford concept cars of the 1920's...

If Duesenberg had joined up with the rest of the companies that came to be General Motors, would they still be making them and would they be making a standard supercharged model? If Bugatti had actually gotten his airplane to mass production and been a positive factor in WWII, would there have been a bomber version?

what if the Scripps-Booth "Behemoth" dwarfed the Nissan "Armada"?

Rich, sometimes you can find old slot car motors that were wound with green coated wire that is a little smaller than the plug wire you used on your seats. As long as you can get the motor apart and unwind the armature you will have a good supply of wire for detailing. (that's if you ever need wire smaller than plug wire)

that's a nice looking engine bay. I do have one thing to point out (having actually owned a Ponco), those radiators don't have a mold line on the top tank. but that ram-air foam looks right on! good luck at the contest, if you don't win the class you'll at least give the judges some difficult choices.

have you tried heating the aluminum while shaping it to your form? (I'm just shooting in the dark here but maybe softening it a bit with heat may reduce stress cracking) the other option would be milling (or just cutting/filing) these pieces from thicker aluminum plate. (these options may have already been thought of and discarded...)

I kinda see 57 buick special sides, 58 chevy or 57 caddy tail light pods, 59 impala "wings", the front fender top/ridges have a hint of 59 buick invicta to them. No clue where to start on the shiney bits up front. That clear roof has a set of problems all it's own. Ya gotta admit, the Centurion is a great looking concept car.

what if the Pontiac division had the power to stand up to GM corporate and actually get the Banshee produced in numbers that may have kicked the Corvette to the curb? The Banshee (functional)concept cars worried the Corvette division enough for them to get corporate to squash it. (and even if that's not the case I still prefer this theory)

perhaps you'd recognize him better in this position looks more like you're gonna have "The Stig" as your driver.

Not very "PC" were they ?

about the only political thing you needed to worry about when those models came out was whether you got labeled as a "commie" although I've never heard why they also added "pinko" to being a commie. -
Mystery Chevy promos

this looks like ad copy for powered cars, they came in electric and gas powered versions. check this link: http://www.powercarcompany.com/ I have a painter friend that gets contracted to help restore these. He has done the paint and body prep on most of the cars on the link page. The wheel covers on the '57 T-Bird were created by him using an old tupperware lid as a base for the ribbed area. -
I had a '65 Catalina wagon that I got real cheap and wanted to turn it into a 'Camino....ran out of time, money and space due to my other project cars, but it would have been a sweet cruiser.

I may have posted a link to that site a while a go but it never hurts to refresh the link. some fascinating work from the glory days of manufacturer/supplier sponsored model contests. if you read through the comment/rant sections of those magazines it would seem that attitudes in the model car hobby aren't a whole lot different these days. you can even see some of Tim Boyd's early models.
