Thanks, Dan and David! I appreciate your comments! The engine is done with plug wires and a fuel line with chrome valve covers from the kit. I'll add heater hoses on final assembly. The interior is painted and I'll add some wood accents, chrome pen, and the kit includes some nice dash decals for gauges, radio, heater controls and Barracuda script. That's next after I finish the chassis. Thanks for looking! ?

Thanks, John, Carl, and Guido! I appreciate your comments! Carl, I normally use Dupli-Color but at $12 a can its a bit expensive. This Krylon works fine for me and it was cheap. Rubbed out the body and foiled it. I was a bit surprised when I found several photos on the internet that were painted with Jamaican Blue Metallic and it looks much more like Light Blue Metallic. It certainly doesn't look like that on the color chart. Anyway, the dark blue looks good to me and the foil really stands out. So the engine, chassis and interior are next! Thanks for looking! ?

I had to do a little more surgery today on the chassis. Seems that the rear roll pan will not fit unless there is a little more room so I had to remove some more of the rear of the chassis and part of the spare tire well in order to get it inside the roll pan. But the front axle centers almost exactly in the middle of the wheel opening so I know the chassis is in the right place. I guess I could have sectioned it in the middle but then I would have to do the same for the exhaust pipes and drive shaft and probably lose a little integrity of the chassis itself. So nobody will really notice this once its built. I also painted the body and other parts today. The paint is Dupli-Color Royal Blue and its a metallic but looks a little flat today as the humidity didn't get below 50%. The finish is smooth so I'll rub out the paint tomorrow and see where it stands. The interior will be a two-tone tan with wood accents. Here are some photos. Thanks for looking! ?

Thanks, David and Len! I appreciate your comments! I primered all the body color pieces today with a dark primer that I picked up at Ollie's for $3. I am planning on painting it with the Dupli-Color Royal Blue that I used on the 40 Ford previously. interior will be black and tan, I think. I think it will look good with a dark color after adding the foil. I plan on doing it as a Formula S with a chrome rocker and black panel in the back. The dark blue will approximate Jamaica Blue Metallic, a 69 Plymouth color. Thanks for looking!

I read the article by Tim Boyd concerning the MPC Barracuda and as I normally do after reading one of his How-to articles, decided to buy the kit and jump right in. Tim suggested using the chassis from the 71 Duster 340. Since I have that one in the closet that I intend to use the engine and seats from for the 71 Demon, using the chassis will be a bonus. So I started by removing the inner fender liners from the Duster body. Next, I fitted the chassis in the Barracuda body and while it is not a glove-like fit, with some trimming of the front and rear of the chassis, it will work. I glued the inner fender liners into the barracuda body and augmented the firewall with some sheet plastic. Although it won't look like a manufactured piece, it will work. I just need to trim the height a little on the firewall and radiator support and this hybrid will be ready to paint. Now I just need to finish prepping the body and and It will be ready for paint. I may add scoops from the Duster to the Barracuda hood. Let me know what you think! I also have a 440 from the Revell 68 Charger in the parts box that I understand will pass for a 383 with only the decal for the air cleaner. Thanks for looking! ?

Thanks, Dan and Carl! I appreciate your comments! This one is done! See Under Glass for more photos and commentary! I think I have the 1971 Mustang covered in all its iterations!

This is the Revell kit that I converted from the 007 kit to a performance Mustang Mach 1. Someone mentioned that it may be issued by Revell but I can't find it and I don't think it is out yet. So, in order to convert this kit I had to do the following: 1. Found a rear spoiler and keystone wheels (oustside only) in the parts box. 2. Drilled holes in the hood for the hood locks and found the hood locks on the 007 kit chrome tree (extra parts) 3. Cut a front air damn using the curvature of the extra front bumper (it fits the underside roll pan perfectly) as a template on sheet plastic. 4. Used the silver side stripes from the Revell Boss 351 kit that I didn't use before and pinstripe and Mach 1 decals from the AMT 71 Mach 1 decal sheet that were unused. From there it was just a matter of paint, construction, and decal application. The exterior paint is Dupli-Color Bahama Blue Metallic and the silver is Tamiya Gloss Aluminum. The interior is Tamiya Gunmetal to resemble a more modern interior style, highlighted with black, silver, and a wood color. The 429 engine has added plug wires with boots and looms, a fuel line from the carb to the fuel pump, and heater hoses. Goodyear tire decals are from Fireball Modelworks. Everything went together well with the exception of the wheels. The wheelbacks tuck inside the tires, but kept slipping out because the keystone front covers do not slip inside. I had to glue the wheelbacks to the tire in a couple of instances. It would have been nice to have a set of wheels that are included in the Boss 351 kit. But mission accomplished! A performance 1971 Mustang Mach 1! Thanks for looking! ? I have also included a photo of 4 recently completed 1971 Mustangs and a 1970 as well that have been built in the last 6 months. From right to left: Revell Mustang Boss 351, Revell 007 kit that was converted here to the performance Mustang Mach 1 429, AMT 1971 Mustang Mach 1, AMT Mustang 007 Mach 1, and finally Revell 1970 Mustang Mach 1.

Thanks, Carl! I appreciate your comment! The chassis. engine, windows and rear taillight panel are done and in! The wheels were a real pain. Seems they didn't fit the tires as well as I thought and the tires came off the wheelback twice forcing me to remove t-he wheel and glue the tire onto the wheelback. In the process, even though I used Z-7 debonder I broke the axle stub both times and had to drill out the axle and wheel and install a new stub. I also rubbed off two tire decals and had to reapply new decals. But finally everything settled down and its sitting on all fours. I still haven't glued the front wheels on and will wait until the interior is in and the body is on and I am near completion before I glue them on. It would have been much easier if I had the right wheels that were in the Boss 351 kit so I guess I should have waited for the new kit instead of using the 007 kit. Each piece or assembly is very time consuming. I've mentioned the wheels, but the engine is no piece of cake wiring the spark plugs and threading the heater hoses under the support over the top of the right valve cover because there isn't any room between the engine and the inner fender. I had to make my own top hose to fit around the distr;ibutor because the kit piece wasn't going to do it. Side windows and mirror attached to the windshield are no easy task either. So next is installing the interior into the body and body on the chassis. I hope everything comes together but I think I will wait until I am fresh in the morning! Thanks for looking! ?

I've gotten something done today; it took me most of the day but the wheels and tires are done. Doesn't look like much but I had the search for tires and wheels and had 3-4 sets that I liked but they didn't work out. They were either too big, the wheelback wouldn't fit with the kit axle which would require either a sleeve or some other fix to make them fit. The tires are small in this kit and the wheelbacks tuck into the hollow tire. So I decided that using the kit tire and wheelback would be the best solution so I found these Keystones in a 1/24 scale 66 Shelby Mustang kit that fit inside the tire and snap into place. I will glue them in on final assembly. These are the wheels that are most often on 71 Mustangs in photos I have seen and are the same type of wheels in the 71 Revell Mustang Boss 351 kit. So once that was decided then I had to paint in the black on the wheel (which takes a while) and then apply some Fireball Modelworks Goodyear decals. But now I can move on and complete the chassis. Thanks for looking! ?

Thanks again, everyone! I appreciate your comments! Surprise - the 007 kit does have the 429 in it!

I'm back at this one and it is such a relief to build such a nice kit. This is the Revell 007 kit but I am building it as a regular Mustang Mach 1. I have finished the engine and the interior including all the decals which are numerous. I haven't added the one on the air cleaner yet as I may have to pull it off to get the engine in the body. The engine has plug wires, looms, and boots. I also added a fuel line and drilled holes for the heater hoses that will be added in the final build stage. The decals are great and everything fits together well. I painted the interior with Tamiya Gunmetal to effect a gray interior with black and silver accents. Can't see much of the dash but the detailed decals are really nice. Next is the chassis and I have to find some wheels. Thanks for looking! ?

Everything is looking good, Jeremy! Nice work! ??

Thanks everyone for the comments! I agree with everyone here that the Revell kits are much better and I am looking forward to my next build turning the Revell 007 kit into a standard Mach 1. I would like to build the 429 too but I can't run or walk to the LHS because we don't have one close by. So its order from the e-tail vendors and pay the shipping. It will take six months for HL to get these in, if they stock them at all. ?

Thanks, everyone! Guido hinted that I should take a couple of photos in the sun. Here they are; one in cloudy sun and two in full sun. My camera skills are not very good and it already has dust on it! ?

This old AMT kit has some issues. It took me all day yesterday to finish this one up. The front wheels were rubbing the front edge of the fender so I removed the wheels, which are pegged on the chassis and moved them back about 1/8" so they were centered. Since I broke the pegs, I had to drill out both the wheelbacks and the chassis and use some plastic rod for new pegs. The decals including the pinstripes were numerous and it took me all afternoon to get those applied. The only details I added were the wheels from the parts box, mirror foil for the exterior mirrors, and some painted embossing powder in the interior floor and package shelf to cover the six deep circle thingys. The engine is pretty basic and I didn't want to waste a pre-wired distributor or any other aftermarket parts on it. The paint is Dupli-Color Pure White and the interior is Krylon Satin Black as is the black on the body. So this one is a prelude to the much nicer Revell 71 Mustang that I am going to build as a regular 71 Mustang Mach 1 (the 007 kit) with a few additional parts from the parts box and decals from the Revell 71 Boss 351. Thanks for looking! ? I just noticed a a small pinstripe on the left side must have fallen off, so I'll fix that.

I'm back on this one again. I have the engine and chassis completed. Both are not very good pieces so no detail on either. I found some Cragars in the parts box so I thought I would use them versus the standard 71 Mustang wheels that look like "Mexican hat" type of wheels to me. The interior is also in and I didn't take any photos as there is nothing to see there - some wood grain and silver inserts on the seats and that's about it. This should come together pretty quick tomorrow. Thanks for looking! ?

That looks great, Dan! Nice work! ??

Paint and your build look great so far, Bob! Nice work! ??

Thanks, everyone! I appreciate your comments! As the "old man" Donn Yost says, 87 percent of contest judging is based on paint finish. I don't know what scientific analysis he did or if that is just his wry sense of humor. But paint and foil are two skills I have tried to improve on through the years. It just goes to show that if you get the paint right you can even make a turd look good! Thanks for looking! ?

This is a Lindberg kit that was sold with the Dodge L-700 trick as a WalMart special years ago. Its a pretty nasty kit and its no wonder it is pictured as a junker on a trailer pulled by the L-700 on the box art. I painted the exterior with Dupli-Color Royal Blue (the can calls it a Ford color) and the interior is primer gray with some clear coat on the dash, steering wheel and column. The engine is totally a creation of mine out of the parts box using the block from the kit. Wheels are the Aoshima 15" big and little American Mags but I couldn't use the tires that came with them so I just substituted a set of Goodyear L60-15s. The chassis is a mess so I won't show that and I had to round out the wheel openings a bit to fit the wheels and tires. Thanks for looking! ?
