Model car builders are cheapskates, right?
Quick GMC replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I only have 2 high dollar kits. One of them is a holy grail for me. $500 for a limited run of 1/8 GT40 super detail engine. The other was $250 for a long out of production Scale Motorsports Super Detail Porsche 956 set. All the rest of my kits were $30 or less -

this is great, I really like it. -
I really want to go to this. Has anyone been before. I want to bring my wife and 2.5 year old. I need advice on how to keep my family sane. Earplugs for the kid, something to keep my wife occupied. We're young (30-32) but both have bad back injuries and can walk or sit for very long. I was wondering if they let you bring in seat pads and stuff. I still need to read over all their rules. Also, if any of you are amateur photographers, I would appreciate any advice on lenses and settings to use. I know it all depends, but a starting point would be helpful. I have a Canon 70D and a 70-300 4-5.6L lense and a Sigma 50mm ART I thought would be good for the paddock. If not, I have a 10-22 wide angle.

Like a dream. I did get a new airbrush setup though. It's a fan tip .5mm for my Grex, so I think that helped a bit, but when spraying out of my regular .3 for some other parts, it comes out nicely. Closest thing I can compare it to is Zero paints. I also use Scale Finishes, their metallic paints are super easy to use.

Thanks. I did chrome, then hot metal blue, then hot metal sepia, then smoke. When I finish, I will take better pics that show the finish more. It looks nice in person

What did you use for the coil springs, and what did you paint them with? I am doing the same build, and did the same thing with the shocks. I used solder for the coils and wasn't sure if they would hold paint build is looking good so far.

Been bouncing around from build to build. Sat down and got a bunch of parts painted on this one yesterday. Doing this build completely out of the box, which may explain why I am actually making progress. I may add spark plug wires, not sure yet. Gravity Colors Volkswagen Pacific Blue for the body. Clearcoat still on the way. I think I will use Tamiya's clear on this one, but I have trust issues with it. I usually clear parts before using Alclad polished finishes, but it left fisheyes everywhere on the parts. That's why the hub caps and other smooth parts aren't as reflective as normal. I meant to use Alclad Pale Gold for the carbs, but grabbed Gold Titanium instead. I think it worked out ok. I rubbed on some Kosutte Ginsan on the molded in linkage to make it stand out. Not sure if I will use any of the wheel trim parts yet, I like the black look.

I bought this brake kit for the Porsche 911 GT1 kit. Same rotors, hubs, etc. and I wanted to try them out. This is the most finicky PE set I have used so far, but it was well worth the time. PROS: Lots of detail High quality castings Easy to clean up, little to no flash incredible detail when done CONS Tiny parts Lots of parts Only 4 PE rotor faces, only enough to do one side of each rotor PE pieces are slightly oversized, so they need to be sanded down on the edges, flush with the resin parts This kit comes with wheels for the F1 GTR, but since I am using it for another car, I didn't need the wheels. Compared to the kit brakes. The camera perspective makes them look much bigger than they are. They are larger, but fit inside the kit wheels just fine. Here is a mockup The PE hub detail was glued on. On the piece on the right, you can see how the PE piece extends beyond the outside of the resin piece just a tiny bit. This may not seem like a big deal, but once it's all painted and installed, it can look a little goofy. On the piece on the left, you can see where I sanded the edge of the PE all the way around to be flush with the resin hub I cut off the molded in bleeder detail .5mm brass nuts in the background This is before the PE Brembo faces were sanded down. You can see how it looks like just a big plate glued on. After sanding, it looks more like one piece Took a while, but I managed to get all these made the same size Here is a mockup with the PE pieces. I ultimately decided not to use the PE rotor faces, since there was only enough included to do one side of each rotor, which I found a little annoying I decided to go all the way and use RB Motion turned bleeders Here is the tricky part, but worth the time. you can see side by side before and after The rotors were painted with Metalizer Titanium, then burnished with a Q-tip to get the metallic carbon effect. And they are done. For the red Brembo letters, I diluted Tamiya red with thinner and basically did a wash in the recessed detail. Since the Brembo Gold was lacquer, I could clean the rest off with acrylic thinner without damaging anything Parts Used Hobby Design Brake Kit RB Motion Bleeders Scale Hardware .5mm brass nuts Scratch wire Paint Used Model Master Titanium Metallizer for the rotors Alclad II Pale Gold for the hubs Gravity Colors Brembo Gold for the calipers Tamiya red acrylic for the lettering

Alclad Chrome - ARRRRGGHHH!!!!!
Quick GMC replied to newbie77's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
black gives the tone of the chrome, you don't need to use black. As long as your surface is extremely smooth and glossy, the chrome will be reflective and have depth. You can manipulate the hue, or color of the chrome with the color of the base coat. -
New distracted driver hazard - Pokemon Go
Quick GMC replied to Jantrix's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
in the last few days, this game has increased Nintento's revenue $7.5BILLION. I am of the Pokemon generation, but I never played it. I was always playing Micro Machines (on Nintendo) or sports and racing games. I could just never get into Sci Fi or those cartoon character games. On the bright said, people are exercising and meeting new friends. I think overall, it's a good thing, even if I have no interest in it. Of course, people have to be reminded not to drive and be on their phones, but even before the game, they had to be told this. I haven't heard of anyone dying though, that seems a little far fetched. Someone did find a dead body, and a few people have been robbed by being lured to certain areas. There are also people reporting seeing multiple police cars parked together while the officers hunt for Pokemons or whatever. That is not very reassuring. -

Holy moly, someone is actually using Imgur. This is what I use and have posted about it a half a dozen times only to be ignored. It's bare bones and stupid simple to use. I dumped PB years ago

yeah but we don't blame cars when people text and crash. Tesla stated in the beginning that drivers are to keep their hands on the steering wheel and remain alert. It this particular instance, the car is not at fault. It didn't see the truck that blended it with the sky, but it wasn't really designed to catch cross traffic anyway. Not to mention the guy was obviously not paying attention, movie or no movie. So the first death connected to autopilot is the fault of the driver, not a failure on the technology's part.

Looking for louvers
Quick GMC replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I wonder if someone can make a die so you can stamp sheets of scale louvers with thin metal sheets. That would be rad. I would do it, but I have zero experience with metal fab and a horrible imagination, but I would buy a bunch. There used to be a guy in town with a Ford Lightning. Silver, nothing too special, lowered, nice wheels and tires, but he had a fully louvered hood and it really set it off. It was hands down the best looking lightning I have ever seen. I would love to be able to replicate it one day, but I have no interest if they aren't thin, open louvers -
I am buying a Challenger Scat Pack when I am ready. I was shooting for this summer, but now it will be next year. I really want a manual, but I am having a hard time deciding. I may go with the paddle shifted auto 8 speed. I don't want straight auto, the paddles give you manual mode, which might be just enough to make me happy

I would assume he ran over to see the car after it crashed and see if the driver was okay. I would. It's a pretty plausible explanation This article quotes the driver as saying he did not see the movie playing, but heard it. If it was still playing and was close enough to hear it, and had seen the movie before to know what it sounds like, it's really not far fetched. But in the end, all we have to go on at this time is the truck driver's statement, so we'll see when the final reports come out. Maybe the truck driver was on mushrooms and just imagining it. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/07/01/tesla-autopilot-crash-driver-was-watching-harry-potter-movie-wit/

Alclad Chrome - ARRRRGGHHH!!!!!
Quick GMC replied to newbie77's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If you try an spray it on like a regular color, it will be hazy and dull. Very thin coats. Also, after it dries, I do a light buff with a Kleenex, just by itself. it does help a little and won't damage the finish.
