"Post traditional" seems as good a term as any for what what was happening past the usual cutoff date for the traditional hot rod style (1963-ish?). It doesn't really tick off the usual traditional boxes, but at the same time, it isn't one we've seen a lot of , those interest seems to be growing. The starting point is a Lindberg '34 Ford pickup, and most of the inspiration is coming from these two rods: So the plan is five spoke mags and blue stripe tires if I can find something suitable, with a cedar (stained basswood actually) bed cover for the Northwest look. Here's a mockup of what I have so far. I was originally going to just use the wheels from Revell's '32 Ford 5 Window Coupe, but I ended up using the frame, running gear and fenders as well. The top has a mild chop, just enough to remove the "Phone booth" look, and the bed has been shortened, though I may shorten it a little more.

That turned out nice! The wheels really work on it.

Modelers lead the way!

Why stop there? Get some metal master like Chip Foose to sculpt mould lines, flash and ejector pin marks into the sheet metal. -
Looking good! That dash treatment looks like what I did with my '29, though I'd may suggest moving up the small gauges so the tops line up with the large one?

Model cars have long been used as a way to explore ideas for customizing full sized autos, but who knew that when you were a little too impatient, and left a big thumb print in a freshly painted hood, you were in fact exploring the cutting edge of automotive style? For a no doubt modest fee, the good people at Porsche AG, will custom print your fingerprint right onto the hood of your brand new 911. More details here https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2020/products/porsche-exclusive-manufaktur-innovative-printing-method-body-paintwork-fingerprint-911-19997.html How soon before we see FCA respond with a Challenger Hellcat Gluebomb Edition?

Revell '29 Roadster, Late '50s Style
Richard Bartrop replied to Richard Bartrop's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Nothing quite so elaborate. More that my airbrush still had a cupfull of gold paint after doing the engine, so I thought I'd see how it looked on the body. -

Revell '29 Roadster, Late '50s Style

I decided to go with Tamiya gloss white for the chassis, with an aluminum finish for the quick change. The Model Master flat white I used on the tires wouldn't dry, and the LHS was out of Tamiya flat white, so those will be attached once he whitewalls are redone. The transmission on the Hemi is shorter than the kit engine, so I scratchbuilt a new driveshaft. -
My big book addiction is mostly sci fi, especially old magazines and art books. Kinda sorta relevant to this thread, I have almost all of Syd Mead's books.

It's an idea that's been kicked around for a while -
definition of street rod and hot rod

Though it's sounding a lot like the real definition of at "Street rod" is, "A hot rod I don't like" -

The irony is, on anything built after say 1955, the choice of a flathead over a SBC, or just about anything else for that matter, is about aesthetics rather than performance. Not that there's a single thing wrong with going that route, of course. -

Losing model parts
Richard Bartrop replied to slusher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sometimes they're in the boxes themselves. But a part in a box. Seal the box. Put the box away. Come back later, open the box, and the part is gone. -
definition of street rod and hot rod
Richard Bartrop replied to Nazz's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Near as I can tell, originally street rod was just to distinguish a hot rod built to be used for the street, as opposed to one built for racing. The term "street rod" has been around since at least 1953, and Hot Rod Magazine's March 1950 article on Bill Niekamp's prize winning roadster described it as a "street roadster" -
So if the Barracuda was the first "pony" car, maybe they should be called... fishy cars?

Been there, done that. buying a replacement, or building it from scratch is the traditional ritual for summoning it back from the void. -
Fiber glass texture?

I've used tissue paper to replicate vinyl tips. It might just do the job here. Apply paint, then carefully lay down the tissue while it's wet. -
I remember both those books well. I picked up a copy of Ralph Stein's book in a used book store.

The version without the coupe body has been reissued a few times. I can't find it, but I'm pretty sure there was an issue with painted box art.

As for old car books I currently own, I have an original copy of "Duesenberg: The Mightiest American Motorcar", by J. E. Elbert. It's an interesting snapshot of the time before the cars because multi million dollar museum pieces, especially the photos of "updated" Duesies.

Looks like AMC isn't showing it up here in the frozen north. -
And if you happen to been burned out on the traditional look, the wheels and running gear from the last issue of Revell's '32 Ford Coupe could probably get you close to this late '60s beauty.
