  1. well i always understood the aversion to 4 doors to be a matter of weight: 2 extra doors with hardware plus window roller hardware etc. at any rate i think a 4 door looks like a tank while a 2 door looks sleek even when it is actually a, well, tank with two doors! you see a lot of modern "rat rodded" four doors these days; i generally consider that a result of all the "good ones" (ie: 2 doors) being swept up long ago. anyway i gotta go with the chevy still.
  2. arent those slot cars? or are they marketed as static models too? i should take some pics of our gangs slot car track and post them here. but i will spare us that one.
  3. a four door? you must be mad!
  4. whitegt, i dont know about plasticote but ive sprayed tamiya primer over other primer with no ill effects, then tamiya color over the tamiya primer. ive been told that if youre planning on using tamiya you should use tamiya from start to finish (primer to clear) so thats what i do and so far its all been good (except for my own clumsiness lately). ive sprayed testors clear over tamiya color too without a problem. it might matter though how much you spray on. i always try to dust on a few coats before going at it for a flow coat and havent had problems at all. one thing: test test test. ok i guess thats three things.
  5. ismael, would you mind telling me what you paid hlj for this kit? i wonder because at the nnl the other day a vendor had these but wanted 35$ for them. i thought that was kinda high so im wondering what a direct import from japan including shipping would be. yeah i know i could just check hlj but just to let others know too many thanks in advance!
  6. i think there is no contest in that...the only question would be what charges were the designer who went from the original to that wedge thing convicted of?
  7. tamiya is as usual head and shoulders above the rest though my one experience with the newish testors laquers was all right. tamiya makes at least two grades of primer, one fine and one extra fine grain. im pretty sure testors makes at least one primer product but i dont even fool around with that, i go for quality and quality is spelled T-A-M-I-Y-A in my book. you often dont even need to polish the paint if applied well in my experience...unless you like the polished look of a "finish" (which i do so i polish whether it needs it or not).
  8. would this fit? wont be done in time though.
  9. sacramento california autorama this weekend will feature a model show and contest. plenty of prizes and be sure to go check the tuner building saturday night...always a wild time in there with plenty of magazines photographing skimply clad females spread out all over the hood of bad tuners. one of my favorite things to watch! this is at cal expo in sacramento for those familiar with the area. im sure theres a website somewhere but i dont know where it is. anyone bringing a model gets free pass to come back sunday (day of judgement as it were)... see you there!
  10. oh somehow i thought 409s were available in 58. shows what i know. thanks for the correx.
  11. >I see "DONKS"!! dont worry; personally i predict this will be the shortest lived trend ever. there is just zero redeeming value at all there, at least it seems to me... > would love to see an FJ40! if you mean a toyota fj40, there are a couple kits out of japan (i forget the manufacturer...fujimi maybe) right now that are probably pretty nice (just seen the box art, kinda cartoonish, but i believe the models themselves are scale.)
  12. couldnt you also get a 409 with dual quads in the chevy? somehow i dont think "fly" really applies to either car.
  13. i would like to go to this just to revel in its magnificence! hey monkeyclaw are you the same one making those 1/8 scale parts featured in the latest mag? if so please pm me so i can buy some many thanks in advance!
  14. ive always loved the chevy but the caddy looks well nice too. the chevy was more a "prol" car while the caddy an elite one so naturally more chevys made it under the customizer knife and later on, to the lowrider crowd. caddys were somewhat out of those guys budget i would think. i remember going to a car show in st louis in early 60s as a kid and being wowed by this 58 chevy with sculpted everything and lowered. it looked really bad and i fell in love right there. i believe it was deep purple color.
  15. >from the can you forgot on the stovetop. dont even think about putting the can in water and heating it on the stove. the hot tap water thing works fine...
  16. hi steve, nice to meet you the other day.yeah the people who won these cars were really stoked over it! heres a couple of shots...my batteries died before i got many of the whole city styles setup, but my buddy jerry may have some more in a day or so... all the giveaway cars: side view of the finished 32: front view: another year gone! i think our combo got shot for the mag so maybe it will show up there one of these days.
  17. couple more pics before i pack it in for the night: one body side with lettering, looking pretty rat: still needs clear... shot of bottom of motor showing header system: shot of complete undercarriage: another shot of undercarriage: im not real happy with the exhaust tips and their connection to the pipes but its too late to worry about that now! see ya tomorrow!
  18. wow bill that is impressive. ive never been able to even visualize how to do realistically opening doors but youre making it look easy. just like a high diver makes it look easy though... maybe i will have to try this on one of my upcoming builds...
  19. yeah ditto the above, i love how the flames seem to come out of the headers and the heat from them has faded the paint (looks like to me anyway). that 50 is great too, especially that clean engine compartment. i take it you scratch built that air cleaner? very nice work.
  20. it should be done by saturday, just barely though. i built the exhaust system (solder) and driveshaft (aluminum tubing with u joints from a well detailed plastic driveshaft) last night and jerry has been messing around with flames and lettering the body along with interior details and other final touches. he is going to clear it today and i am going to attend to some other minor details this evening. its all about the details and thats where the devil lives you know. im afraid ive not taken any more pics this week. probably take some tonite or tomorrow at the NNL, both of this car and of the entire set of pickup truck, trailer and this car. i hope i win it, and so does jerry (hopes he wins it that is)...
  21. so did you finish it? anyway bob, im glad someone else shares my feeling about tom daniels creations. there is a place for them, but not on my building table im afraid. i dont believe i ever saw one that i liked. now ed roth on the other hand, he was my hero, rumours of empty chromed engine blocks, totally unusable bubble tops (ever wonder how it would feel under one of those in the california sun?), and all.
  22. that looks like a nice clean build. havent looked at that kit for a long time but as i recall its a bit of a challenge to build nicely, so congrats!
  23. yes it seems it was covered before and it seems i even posted to that thread. talk about your crs. i took photos last night but i wont bother posting them now...
  24. >Why won't Hossain be there? i havent spoken to him in a while but im sure he will be there...sorry if something i wrote gave the wrong impression. >Did you guys finish up the giveaway yet? heh. tonite maybe on the deuce though i doubt it. jerry flamed it the other night and now we are trying to get some decals to lie down before the clear coat, and then theres the exhaust system, steering shaft and a few other details. the rest of the set (a 57 chevy truck and trailer) not done either...i delivered a straight six for it last night but i think theres still a bunch more to go. we will be with you in spirit thurs and friday night im sure! >Now thats the one I'd like to win! hey, i think i have an idea!
  25. nice motor there! if i may make a suggestion, its a lot easier to drill for wiring before assembling the motor (both distributor and the plugs), and even easier (though details suffers a bit) to use a pre-wired distributor which are easily found in the aftermarket. but like you said, the only way to learn is to do! be sure to post some "done" photos when the time comes!
