lincoln V-12 finished, ready for 07 NNL West giveaway car
jbwelda replied to jbwelda's topic in WIP: Model Cars
wow! is that a halibrand quick change rear end on those super chargers or turbo charges or whatever those are? how did that work out on the strip? thanks for the comments folks; i hope to meet many of you at NNL this year! -
an outfit called southeatst finecast makes some very nice wires too. havent got a link but a google search ought to turn them up. ive got some 72 spoke ones with tyres that are mega cool looking.

>1) what kinda engine is in this car? im not expert but it looks like a desoto hemi motor to me...

just thought some might like a look at the lincoln V12 i just finished. this is destined for a 32 ford our club (city styles of sacramento california) is building as part of a raffle prize for the 07 NNL West in Sunnyvale next month. the car will be a budget racer 32 ford based on the orange crate body, on a trailer being pulled by a 57 chevy pickup (theme is 32s and 57s). i only build the motors for both cars; the bulk of the build is being done by fellow club members. in fact ive not yet really seen the cars the motors i built (the other is a chevy six slightly souped up) but i will try to get some photos of them when done and post here as well or if youre planning on attending make sure you check them out in person (or maybe even win them!) anyway, heres a few shots of the flattie V-12. thanks to lyle willits for piqueing my interest in this motor and leading me to richard wilson who casts them up. i took some liberties with the motor due mostly to my ignorance of the real thing and some real-life limitations, but think it turned out pretty good. one question...where is the fuel pump on this motor? hanging off the front? i would like to route the fuel line coming out of the distribution block on top of the engine over to the pump and then out to the tank. would it be reasonable to have a remote located pump somewhere on the firewall or on the frame? comments appreciated by the way!

i take it thats a fujimi release? did that body kit fit well out of the box or did it require a lot of fiddling and cutting and filling? just wondering...nice build.

i appreciate the fact that this forum is open to entreprenuers who want to show their resin products. its hard to get word out on good new products and i hope this place can serve as a forum to do that. i wish others would show their wares as well. maybe there can be a section to do just that? i mean if theres a new kit review section i dont really see the difference.

ah i see, yes those are very cool pieces, its always a shame to bury good work but at least you know its there. seems you and i might share some interests: VWs and HIM at least.

really cool! where did you get those optima batteries? by the way not to be critical but the yellow top optima battery doesnt belong in a street car. its a deep cycle battery and a typical trickle charge circuit like a generator/alternator wont keep it up to snuff and it will most likely expire within a year unless its taken off and deep cycle charged. ask me how i know. now the red top one, thats a street, non-deep cycle battery. i have a toyota land cruiser with a 350 v8 in it with a dual battery setup, a red one for everyday use and a yellow i usually switch to when i need to use my winch for any length of time and im way off the road. i generally take the yellow one out for a deep cycle recharge about once a year but thats only because it doesnt get used much. if i used it regularly it would probably need to be dc'ed once a month. i dont want to get stuck up goler wash in death valley or out in utah canyons with a dead battery...been there and done that and dont care to repeat the hike out. anyway sorry to pick nits, those are really cool builds with very nice detail.

jbwelda replied to sparkyd31's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
most of my "must haves" involve cars ive owned or currently own. that pretty much leaves me out in the cold unfortunately. -
Just bought my first car kit in over 30 years
jbwelda replied to old409's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)

posting your work areas
jbwelda replied to sparkyd31's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
i notice the cats looking around for something to play with! im not going to post my "work area" because its just a table within my apartment. i have trouble even keeping that as it is even without my current girlfriend living there. shes always complaining what a wreck my place it. yes its a wreck but i can find everything unless she messes with it! and im 56 years old! -
just out of curiosity what are those two belt driven things under the pushrod tubes/cylinders?

Since we're talking about 1958 car designs......
jbwelda replied to a topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
best of the bunch by far if you ask me: >1965 Pinnafarina Corvette Roundine but bwoy isnt that 1958 Ford X-2000 a real beauty? man it makes the edsel or lincoln look like a real winner in comparison! anyone ever sit in a car with a bubble top out in the sun for even a couple minutes? i have...its not an experience i would want to repeat. i think some of these designers were way ahead of the curve on the LSD usage. -
yeah thanks. i guess we should just all take what we are given, the hell with accuracy or even quality control. just shut up and build. right. thats really gonna improve things and *really* gonna get new people involved in the hobby...when ###### is ###### right out of the box. im sorry, i dont agree. when i buy a new product i expect it to be at least semi worthy. now if this were a reissue from long ago things like this would be excusable but i see no excuse for this business right here, just lazy quality control. i would rather spend my time modifying something for a reason than to make up for cheapness and/or laziness on the part of the manufacturer. but like they say, screw me once, shame on you; screw me twice, shame on me. and imo AMT is on about its 20th screw job this year. but it does provide some comic relief. you might want to move this to the rant dept.

request: photos of that lincoln V12 flathead motor please
jbwelda replied to jbwelda's topic in WIP: Model Cars
hey thanks for the link lyle, that motor and the car its in is a real inspiration. i just hope the one i do even approaches that one in overall looks and level of detail. im glad you explained the dual distributor set up there because prior to that i was thinking that was a coil on each side somehow. -
i made that up, bill. but if they did, i would bet it wouldnt have these problems
-
one word: fujimi porsche 356 quad cam motor well thats six words i guess...

are you referring to the dimples on the outer part of each spoke? man if thats so, that seems totally unacceptable. what a pain in the butt to fix not to mention have to then rechrome. when is tamiyas version coming out?

request: photos of that lincoln V12 flathead motor please
jbwelda replied to jbwelda's topic in WIP: Model Cars
ah yes thank you very much, the red v8 above especially was a great help as i can see how the shrouding goes and why you cannot really see the distributor with the fan belts etc in place. i think i might extrapolate a 12 cyl distributor from what i see there. one more question, since what im building the motor for what would be a drag car: would a magneto be appropriate? and if so would it be appropriate to have it stick up at about a 20 degree angle from vertical, leaning to the left as you look at the *front* of the motor? or would it have to stick straight out and run horizontal to the ground? i dont think we will have room for that latter option but if i could just fab a magneto it would be easier i think... many thanks for all the help again. i think when i finish the first of these motors i bought i will go back and do another for a rat rod thing. (see thread on unfinished projects!)
