Gregg's Two Cents (No Change Required)

where do you get those qtips with the wood stick? and is there any secret to avoiding shedding the cotton onto the adhesive? currently i try to dampen the end with some all purpose go anywhere miracle solution, aka saliva, but that only works to some extent. oh on re-reading your post i guess you mean you use one end of the wood q tip with the cotton removed...that makes sense. my buddy jerry amaral has toothpicks he specifically uses for bmf, and says he has used the same 3 for a decade because now they are worn down very smooth but hard. my cat doesnt dig that i have stuff around for too long though. gotta find another cat. -
thats a very cool type 3 to model...for wheels ive personally always been partial to empi style minilites on those cars but i think the porsche wheels look good too especially if the background is done in flat black and the spokes made to stand out like that 1:1. one day im going to have to start the tamiya ghia with the mazda twin turbo rotary i have planned for it!

>have tried the Model Master stuff which just curls up and is not user >friendly thats kind of strange...it was this seeming property of bmf that caused me to look for an alternative. maybe the bmf i initially used was old or something because it curled up really badly when i tried to use a piece larger than say an inch. and i believe in the "more is better" school when it comes to this; what i mean is i use a piece way bigger than necessary just to avoid the curling aspect. maybe i ought to get some new bmf and give it a try. sometime ago there was a thread about what makes you stop on a project. for me its the prospect of hours of attempting foiling...that will get a project put away quicker than anything for me! but thats why i typically build cars that dont require a lot of chrome or at least not real prominent chrome. -
that looks great though. a bit of real world advice: i used fram filters exclusively through the years on real cars but have since learned the error of my ways. fram filters are ######, plain and simple. since i learned this (and its backed up by numerous tests published on the web, google "fram" for an example) i stopped making the oil filters in that very identifiable orange even though the best filters (wix also sold by napa under their house brand name) were an ordinary black color. anyway not sure if you care but thats the word on the streets.

hey bill, one question: why would you be called "mr obsessive"? nice work on that windshield; ive struggled with trying to figure out just such a kludge as you got going there. im going to have to try that one! killer work too, dude. -

>If a piece gets over-worked, it tends to get that gum wrapper look to it, >rip it off and start over. how do you suggest doing that? seems everytime i try it leaves this nasty gum/gooey adhesive behind. how do you remove that? could it be because i dont use true "bare metal foil" but instead i have a couple sheets of the detail master stuff? maybe they dont even sell it anymore because the sheets i have have to be 5 years old at least. could that be the problem? i confront this problem every time i use it it seems...try to remove it to make another attempt but it just goes to h*ll from there! -

imo chrome is overrated. way overrated. but what gregg says about bmf is true and it also applies to real world chrome. chrome is an illusionary finish. most of the "chrome" one marvels at is actually the prep work on the metal under the "chrome". "chrome" itself is practically transparent. but as i said i think chrome is overrated, i much prefer more natural finishes like brushed aluminum or even polished metal. thats why i dont build american iron for the most part. and that bare metal foil stuff was invented by the devil just to perpetuate frustration in the world. -
Update on Box Art for the Revell - Model King Pro Stock Olds
jbwelda replied to SteveG's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
thanks for the explanation doug. the work speaks for itself and for your talent at creating images like that. i had a feeling it was a photoshop virtual double exposure but thought maybe somehow you had drawn the interior bits or something. i will buy this one just for the art! -
>In reality the trim on the side panels was aluminum and the rubber >beading between the fenders and body was black. I guess I am >confused by what you are asking maybe. yes i am very familiar with type 3 vws as well. never owned one but sympatized with a few people who have. ive mostly confined myself to "the thing" and porsches, but i digress... what i was asking, if you were referring to me, was that shot of the rear of the notchback where it appears youve covered the fender beading with foil. shouldnt it be black and not chrome/aluminum/silver?
-
just out of curiousity why are you doing the panel beading in chrome? shouldnt that be black? nice job...where did you get the body? i dont believe ive seen a notchback body ever.
-
i didnt know people in the USA called mercedes "merc"s...isnt there some other car also called that? i thought that terminology was only used in the uk. i thought people here called them "benz"s. personally i call them "benzio"s. anyway nice build and youre right you dont see them that often.

>You must mean too short in LENGTH! yes thats what i meant...either its too short or too tall (or the lense is distorting it) because i cant even hardly see "jetta" there.

i believe that resin motor is a direct repop of the motor in the ford escort from esci which is probably long out of production. i believe but not sure that replicas and miniatures of maryland makes a nicer one in resin and also in white metal; from memory it seems to match the photo above better though it breathes through weber sidedrafts instead of fuel injection.

if that bora is really a jetta like we know in the states, it doesnt look too hot from that photo. like the body is too tall or something, or too short.

isnt this the lovliest house youve ever seen??
jbwelda replied to JAFFA's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
thats a cool concept; that car is sculpture though i would be almost sure, with all fluids and "stinky stuff" drained out. but if it were mine i would have my birdcage, my d-jaguar and my lotus 15 parked in the front room. if i had any of those. or a house. -
the guy has connections; i doubt he will suffer any long term problems. i think he was arrested for car theft because that and other cars he was involved with were brought out of europe/into the usa under some kinda cloud. but what i liked most was when the cops arrived he said he was just the passenger. he didnt really know the name of the "driver" other than some first name (werner?) and said he took off running up that hill after the crash. sure he did. but then homeland security showed up on the scene and he evidently just talked to them and not to the police. i smell a CIA coverup but dont worry it was probably necessary to get those nasty terrorists. why do you hate america so much? as tom tomorrow would ask.

care to let me in on the process that results in that "phantom" view? it must be done in photoshop but do you take the chassis photo and superimpose a shot of the body on it? its a very nice looking set of box art. -
nice! but cars are meant to turn both left and right!

thanks for the continuing comments folks, i brought this to the nnl west and not many people noticed it seemed like...ive been involved in a number of other projects so i havent really gotten back to this in a while but may start up again on it with an eye to actually getting it done. and thanks for the compliments zeb, i try to keep the slot cars a separate thing because most here (i would guess) consider them a distinctly lower life form compared to what we do in our "real" time. anyway that header is from a Morgan V-8 (basically a Buick V8 that British Leyland bought the rights to and put in Morgans, Rovers, MGBGTs and some other cars over in the UK). it came with a kit that i believe Southeast Finecast sells of the V8 but looked really right here so i used a spare i have for it. ive decided to continue with the T body but i do think i will retrofit the austin body when the car is finished so that either will fit on the chassis for display purposes...i just really love that austin body. i also picked up another T roadster with track nose that i *may* substitute for the one shown. the one shown looks ok but its got some problems in the casting (like one side being a quarter inch thick while the other is 1/16", little details like that) but for now i think i will continue on with whats there and possibly replace the body later. fitting the body on the chassis around the running gear etc is going to be a challenge since i dont want to just hack it on there but rather try to streamline the openings for low drag coefficient...we will see how it goes. anyway thanks for dragging this back to the top; i will try to get some photos after i get some significant progress...

it doesnt relate to a song; at least not one anyone around here is likely to know of. thanks though -

wow man i am totally impressed! the only problem will be, the unitiated (like me before i saw what youre going through here) will just think, nice out of box build there! -
im not so sure your problems with that kit had to do with the tan plastic though...ive built a couple in tan and never had a problem with it. maybe it was *the* plastic but i dont think it was because it was tan. could be wrong though i guess...

24 would appear to be a mazda miata door handle. but that brings me to something: that quiz may show who the "real gearheads" are if you confine yourself to american iron but theres a whole wide world out there. show some trim from obscure ferrari, maserati, assorted brit cars (non eventual bmc especially) and you will find out who the *real* gearheads are. ps: i probably still wouldnt be able to guess more than a few, regardless.
