hello g&j i just got around to reading the latest two issues and the one with the bentley on the cover (by the way...WOW f'in WOW!!!) had a mention in your ask g&j column about suspension parts in the old parts packs. you said there were no parts included except for one with an "orange crate" type frame in it. well im not sure i can agree with that, but maybe im about to bring up the same package you allude to...there was certainly at least one frame set that included, from memory, a very nice halibrand quick change rear end plus certainly at least one front axle, along with radius rods, springs and shocks and other suspension parts. if i recall correctly there were other suspension parts in some of them as well (i seem to remember at least a couple of different frame and running gear assortments). tonite when i go over to my friend jerry amarals place to finish up our 07 NNL deuce i will look through his extensive collection of these packs and take photos to prove my point. or disprove my point depending on outcome. you did mention that if someone were to make these things today there would be suspension parts like a corvette IRS or a jaguar IRS etc and i would just like to say to that: BRING IT ON!!! i think this would be a great item for a resin caster though some of this stuff would be pretty fiddley. anyway great issues of course and did i mention that Bentley! WOW OH WOW!!!

'63 Chrysler Turbine Car Update----Final Update!-6/23/07
jbwelda replied to MrObsessive's topic in WIP: Model Cars
i had this kit once; a reissue of unknown vintage. what i couldnt get over was all the flash on the *small* parts...so much so that one (at least *this* one) couldnt tell where the flash ended and the part began. so...im interested to see what you can do with this mess, uh, i mean kit. -
the toyotas wheels are supposed to be full right lock, evidently the last time i set it on the base i forgot to do that. will go attend to it right away.

here we have another diorama i did a few years ago, this time on a laguna seca like road course: an overhead view: here you see the toyota s800 coming off the track and fouling a cone as the photographer (off camera) gets nervous: heres another shot this time from the photographers perspective: heres a worms eye view: the honda's pilot, i think he needs to get his hand back on the wheel! : the base was made up from an amt display case with bondo built up and textured, then painted. nothing spectacular but it serves the purpose. the cars are a tamiya honda s800, a fujimi toyota s800 and a (jeez i forget who made this...fujimi maybe?) subaru 360 that imo is the coolest thing here. both honda and toyota have complete engine detail, plumbing and wiring but the subaru is curbside. all three have been kitbashed a bit but essentially box stock, but pilots have been added to all three cars sometimes at the risk of great bodily harm (theirs not mine!)...

here are a couple of shots of a diorama i built a few years ago and which i regularly rotate cars in and out of (the front portion anyway). sorry for the less than optimum photos, this is kind of hard to shoot. first a rather poor view through the plastic front of it: then we have a shot from above: the basic diorama base is four of the fujimi garage kits hooked together, ive meant to replace that with a piece of granite but havent yet. there is a tamiya mini cooper up on stands getting its front end adjusted, a gunze lotus elan having its old motor changed out for a new one, a lotus seven being hotrodded and having its tiny tyres swapped for some that are way too big, along with a gunze triumph TR3 and a merit lotus 11. the yuppie owner of the TR3 is checking out the 11 for tips on his car once he ditches the tennis racquet in the back seat.

its a random orange metallic pearl flake baby fingernail polish jerry came up with out of his stash. later we found a nice deep purple that would have been great too but the orange looks alright.

A Dodge & a Nissan? Magnissimo? R34 Magnum? Am I nuts?!
jbwelda replied to Zoom Zoom's topic in WIP: Model Cars
yes man that is very cool! i too dont like that heavy front end of the chrysler product but youve made it look great. ps: to bug eye sprite man...frog eye is what they call them in the land of origin... -
thanks folks, i should note that i only did the motor; and also fabbed the mounts to the chassis, and the exhaust system (still in progress). thats jerry amaral's hand you see there on the airbrush, he and i have been modifying the chassis others in our club built to make it actually fit the motor and body, but jerry has been doing much of that work. its a group project and i kind of made it sound like its *my* project so just want to clear that up. more pics to come tuesday or wednesday...should be close to completion by then. ps: cool big deuce! hope i win that one!

Our model club, City Styles of Sacramento CA is building a set of cars to give away in the raffle at NNL West this year. Ive shown the Lincoln V12 that i built for the Deuce, but heres some shots of the car as i progresses. its getting so nice I hate to give it away! under the airbrush: base coat on body finished: some shots of body on frame with motor in place: its obviously the Orange Crate body, my all time favorite deuce body. Simple race car interior next with roll cage, and Jerry is going to continue painting the body; currently laying out flamework!

oops, d&j, not d&g. no wonder i can never find them in the phone book!
-
yep i would say a rx7, late generation. you drew those? jeez i hope youre a professional illustrator; if not then the world lost a great talent!
-
that would be d&g? ive never been there but want to sometime. meanwhile i think its got some competition that weekend...the swap meet at the nnl!
-
i suppose it goes without saying, but just a reminder that the NNL West (or whatever its formal title is) is next saturday feb 3 at the santa clara convention center on or near great america parkway off the 101 (i believe it is) in silicone valley california. hope to meet some of you out there...look for my pair of nissans, the as-yet-incomplete offy powered lake roadster, and a few other recent builds...i should be lurking nearby.

1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Landaulet - Trumpeter Kit
jbwelda replied to PeterLepold's topic in Model Cars
i wouldnt worry about the hood, thats how they fit in real life! but you forgot the harley davidson and "support your local hells angel" bumper stickers! though that confederate flag on the boat comes close! hey killer builds and that boat is really great. dont mind what i say about the car, you really did it justice, far better than i would be able (or inclined) to do. -

jbwelda replied to MrObsessive's topic in WIP: Model Cars
thanks for the reply bill, yeah i realized that when i got home and looked at the stand. its now taped securely! again great work on the vette and you think like me...i like opening up panels that are supposed to be open. bit of a pain sometimes but well worth it looks-wise. -
i wish they would bring out a 85 land cruiser fj60!
-
huh. i swear ive seen one around somewhere, maybe my local hobby shop or at ace hardware in berkeley. if i see one i will pick it up for you...its optional you buy it from me though, if you change your mind i will just add it to the stash.

looking good; i was confused why you wanted to shoot future over the car before primer but i get it: a barrier coat to prevent the crappy plastic from crazing. one more use for the miracle tool. and a friend of mine showed me that razor edge business on a 1:1 car he was building for a customer: really makes the car look sharp and no one is ever able to figure out why! oh one more thing: it appears you got tired of your tamiya paint stand coming apart in your hands too! im going to tape mine up like yours when i get home tonite; dont know why that hadnt occurred to me! only problem is then it wont swivel and i like that swivelling so i can move the body without disturbing the stand (or to be more precise, the dust under the stand!). man thats looking great; i love the detail on the motor and undercarriage as much as the rest of it! -
Trumpeters 1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Landau Coupe
jbwelda replied to PeterLepold's topic in WIP: Model Cars
wow even though this car is a monstrosity in my eyes you did a very inspiring and beautiful job of it; almost makes me change my mind on the styling! and that boat...man thats out of this world!!! and i love that "cuckoo" smiley you got there...goes perfectly with this statement: >european and asian cars during the 80's looked like ###### 4REAL uh which european cars would those be? now if you come back with some "wedges" i will have to agree! still they got nothing on a monte carlo! by the way i recently saw a new or relatively new carlo and it looked a whole lot better. but we could have design discussions/wars forever i suppose! -
well back in the sixties i was this far from putting a small block chevy in my 1:1 MGTF to rival my friends healy with the small block. somehow good sense got the better of me, for the first and probably last time that i recall.

Paint has been berry berry good to me lately.........
jbwelda replied to PatRedmond's topic in WIP: Model Cars
yeah so i gotta open my big mouth then i sit down to color sand the tamiya british green on the miata im building and sand right through it to the primer!   grrr...well back to the paint booth. and i cant really blame it on the paint except the dumb stuff is so thin, so lifelike! i shoulda just left well enough alone...its not like there was any orange peel or dust or anything. -
Bill Geary,Steve H, and anybody else
jbwelda replied to B.Beachum's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
hmmmm i never scrape away chrome or paint before gluing and i never seem to have a problem with adhesion. but i typically use super glue or epoxy and never solvent glue. maybe thats the reason?
