Protect your models from those nasty tires!!
jbwelda replied to KT EASTMAN's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
usually when i first get a kit, i will fondle the plastic and then separate the chrome, glass and tires into separate bags, usually zip lock bags, before i put it away. sometimes its hard to get the box closed because of the extra space from the bags. -

(Nearly) Completed 1962 Willys Jeep PU replica
jbwelda replied to Zoom Zoom's topic in WIP: Model Cars
wow how cool! and it doesnt seem it took long to get together, or maybe i missed something. im impressed someone can put something as nice as that in so short a time! -
heres a bit of an update, removed the fogging in the front and reshot it yellow, havent shot the second color yet. trial fit of chassis, interior and body: heres a shot from top front and low rear respectively: and a glimpse of the surgery necessary to get the clearance in the front. those used to be full wheel arches. and note how i ran the tie rod through whats left of the fender wells. i had to use thumbnails because the photos were too big even though imageshack claimed to reduce them to 640 X 480 it didnt seem to happen. i will reupload them later and see if i can get decent images. i hope to get the second color shot this weekend then pearl then clear!

is this the alex who built the cover ferrari for the latest issue? man that is one nice piece of work. meant to mention something about it earlier... -
thanks for the comments, im anxiously awaiting art to chime in. >I also need to build my other MGB CV kit...another model that Aoshima >should reissue sometime. The racer you show is extremely rare as well. i didnt know that. i believe i have at least one more unbuilt on the shelf and if im not mistaken my local hobby shop has (or had, recently) one on the shelf too. it was a very nice body, zoom, very accurate from what i could tell. a friend of mine had a couple of GTs years ago that i really liked. i would have preferred a roadster myself but the GT had a certain charm all its own. tonite i might photograph and post the pics of the rover/morgan/mg V8 motor i built to display next to the GT. it was a white metal kit from southeast finecast and very detailed.

some years ago i bought an MGB GT resin body/transkit from AAM, in fact i may have bought it right from Art at the NNL West. then i met you at the next year NNL and told you i had started it, but never saw you again. so knowing you read this forum, i thought i would drag it out of the case, along with a more or less OOB Monte Carlo Rally MG roadster that was essentally used for the base kit for the GT. heres some pics i shot earlier today: first, heres the pair of them on the workbench: note that the GTs rear wheels are loose and are kind of askew in the photos. i need to get under there and figure out where to put the superglue! so heres a front/side view of the GT. and a rear/side view of it: i believe this would be a close up (perhaps TOO close up!) of the dashboard and steering wheel... finally, a shot of the monte carlo car, i did a good bit of scratchbuilding and improvement on this car including realistically lowering it approx 4 scale inches (though it probably ran at OOB height in the actual rally, i cant help it, i like low cars!), interior features and more that i cant remember: let me know what you think, the body was nice and consistently thin, pretty bubble free as i recall, but the interior bucket (or maybe it was just an extension you grafted to the kit interior pan?) i remember as a real challenge to get to sit properly, but the thing came out very nice (by my standards anyway).

i really love those homely cars. i would like to revert one back to a semi-stock street car one of these days. to park next to the gasser!
-
isnt the whole front end a trunk? the motor is amidships isnt it? anyhow its a model so i will rarely need to use a trunk. note that i blended the front and rear clips to the body to eliminate the panel lines there. im also planning on using the hardtop and cutting some half-open windows for the sides. i like japan spec cars so i kept the right hand drive...

i dont have the box in front of me but i believe its a fujimi kit, a special edition of some sort, curbside of course. pretty simple but nice details nonetheless. only concern i have is its scale, it looks larger than 1/24 to me but ive not yet measured my neighbor's 1:1 to confirm that. its a bitchin little ride, i have to admit i stole the color scheme of the body, interior and wheels from an article on a porsche carrera that was recently featured in another magazine. i like this cars looks better than the carrera though...i realize some will question my sanity based on that remark. im hoping to get the paint straightened out this weekend even if i have to reshoot the yellow on the front, will post some updated pics after that is completed.

Fogging of clear plastic parts
jbwelda replied to HIGHLANDER1's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
even after the canopy fogged, if he had applied future over the fogging it would have disappeared and he wouldnt have ended up with a pile of parts. again, ammonia only REMOVES future, it doesnt in and of itself glue stuff together nor prevent fogging that i know of. -
primered body on lowered chassis, XS wheels and brakes. it will sit this low as the chassis is all done, wheels mounted, and body engaged with chassis: base coat testors daytona yellow lacquer on, followed by ill advised attempt at fogging with testors grabber orange. will have to polish the orange down into yellow on the front, then i think i will mask along the swoop character line on the sides and up onto the trunk and paint that orange over the yellow on it right now. then im planning a thin pearl coat followed by a couple coats of clear to polish on: interior bucket with seats, dash is done but not shown, seat belts are in progress, etc. hope to have this one done in a couple weeks now that the incredible heat has abated!

my next project
jbwelda replied to jbwelda's topic in 1:1 Reference Photos: Auto Shows, Personal vehicles (Cars and Trucks)
glad you asked, guest! to tell the truth its on the back burner at the moment while i start a couple more projects destined for, you guessed it, the back burner. actually i just need to concentrate on doing some decals; probably when it cools down around here. i expect to have it (and a couple other as yet half done projects) done in time for NNL West in january or whenever it will be this year. -

Trumpeters 1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Landau Coupe
jbwelda replied to PeterLepold's topic in WIP: Model Cars
i guess im the only one in the world with this question: huh? a monte carlo? why? i guess they are popular with low riders just because they are cheap and no one else ever wanted one but thats just it: no one else ever wanted one. like i said, i guess its just me but its beyond my comprehension how any company thinks they are gonna sell these. and thats if it were truly a good replica which it appears it is not. funny world aint it. edit: dont mean to discourage or insult those who may think this is a great design or your father had one or something like that, i realize there are various reasons for wanting a model of a car. but from a manufacturers perspective, does anyone think there is a market for this particular vehicle? and the reason for any potential market? it sure aint the most elegant car ever to come off GMs design boards! so dont take it the wrong way, im just wondering the motivation for a release like this... -
that looks great and from the photos the paint looks to be a good match to the stock paint as well! but i got a question about this "mainstream/mainline" term. my understanding is that it refers to the not really "base" model but a mid line model of a particular car series like the malibu. in this case i would imagine it would be the bench seat malibu with a 283 motor. this one though is a super sport, and from the looks of the flag on the fender it has a 396 (or maybe im not remembering my chevy flags properly...i know my 1:1 toyota land cruiser with a fuel injected 350 has a corvette 327 fi insignia on it (that i put there along with the motor into the engine compartment) but thats pretty much where my knowledge of chevy insignias ends, but i digress). the point is, is this really a mainliner being an SS model and all? just curious about the terms, not to take away from the build or anything.

Tamiya shows new life. Mercedes McLaren SLR coming!
jbwelda replied to Zoom Zoom's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
i might have to pony up for one of those then; my problem if you could call it that is that i have the gunze one (never started im afraid) and the i think it was revell or whoever made that curbside one thats been repackaged a number of times? also exoto has a full line of them in 1/18 but of course they are die casts (but what diecasts!) and i have a couple of those. then revell/monogram released nice 1/32 scale slot cars and i have a rack of them. so im a bit non-plussed about adding more. however if accurate miniatures did a nice one with good engine detail for a reasonable price i would be all over it even though i might not build it right away. -
i forgot about mascoutah! i went to later elementary school there. and explored a lot of corn fields. and spent a summer building a hill to sled down in the winter. then the authorities showed up and leveled it sometime before october. i never put baseball cards on my bike though, loved them too much for that. thanks again mom...im sure that babe ruth rookie card isnt worth anything now. nor the roger marris or mickey mantle. actually mom you made up for it in so many other ways so youre forgiven...but not forgotten!

The famous Z06 oil tank and finished interiors *PICS*
jbwelda replied to ismaelg's topic in WIP: Model Cars
ah so those were just basically some photo etch buckles you had lying around. i think i got some of those...i use masking tape for belts too but maybe i will try the solder wick. i actually thought they were a specific belt set but your answer is very helpful, so thanks for that. i fail to remember hardly anyone builds straight from even an aftermarket set! -
would that be belleville or o'fallon illinois? i lived there as a kid. when we moved to california my mom gave away all my models and other stuff; i didnt realize it until we were in marin county! so does that guy have my baseball cards too? thanks mom...
