  1. yeah now a Subaru water cooled turbo in there makes sense. and it would haul a$$ too, around corners as well! there must have been something wrong with your 1.8. in VW circles anyway it should have screamed. nothing some webers and refreshed heads shouldn't have been able to remedy. jb
  2. I think you have discovered why this is an "obscure" kit! jb
  3. >And I'm glad you asked as I hope my logic helps others who frequent eBay huh? your logic points squarely at the auction and all the bids being on the up and up. the winner bid three days before the auction end. most of the others followed him, and most of them bid on the last day and mostly the last hour of the auction. all were separate IDs bidding with only a couple of exceptions so there weren't a slew of bids 5$ apart by one bidder. there was a last minute push by two bidders but the winner obviously bid something like 2000$ so his bid held until the end. there is nothing fishy there; that's how serious people play this ebay game when they want to win something and have the money to not diddle around. jb
  4. >The guy had dropped a Chevy 350 in it. the idiocy of some amerikans just astounds me. a 350 into a 914/6. way to go. ruined a fine car and a boatanchor motor all in one move. and it probably cost a hell of a lot too. moron. jb
  5. >But if you look at the bidding history, it seems fishy, to me anyways. ok in all your wisdom, exactly WHY does it "seem fishy" to you? because there is nothing fishy about it at all...it started low and went high thanks to four bidders who were willing to throw down serious money. jb
  6. for some reason I thought the 914-6 was a 2.8 litre engine. guess not. Still, when they say "2.0 litre" I think the four punched out to two litres, not a two litre six. but guess its technically right then. jb
  7. 1st class spyware. you get what you pay for, or the NSA and who knows who else does anyhow jb
  8. dittos on the Tamiya tape. if you are painting be sure to use it, it will stop 90% of your problems. I would think about buying some solid color decal paper, the color you want the stripes to be, if possible. then you can just trim out areas to lay down as needed. I have also painted Tamiya masking tape and then cut it into strips. worked pretty good; its thin enough to not really stand out, and it pretty much got buried under a coat or two of clear. actually painting the stripes is the hairiest bear of them all if you ask me. I would rather take my chances with some decals or tape that can be moved around and wont bleed. jb
  9. that product timeline feature is pretty kool. thanks for pointing that out. jb
  10. thanks for the info afx. now isn't that goofy: the SIX (the rarest of all in the car ever) is the engine in even the one that says its a two litre! I so wish I had bought one of those 914-6s when they were available. there was one at the corner Porsche dealer for 5000 out the door and I kept on walking. #kickmyhead the "normal" versions were around 3400 if I remember right. but at that point my head was sore. jb
  11. is this the same kit as the 914-6 they offered (under Richie Ginther for one)? kind of wondering that because I have been bird dogging the Richie Ginther one on ebay lately but haven't come up lucky on the price yet. heres the latest one I saw...note that at the last moment he added a bunch of spare and resin parts including killer minilite wheels. he did, however, list it as "Gunther" instead of Ginther, and repeated that error through the sparse auction copy. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-914-6-Richie-Gunther-039-s-Racer-Revell-1-25-kit-VINTAGE-HTF-/301383549692?pt=Model_Kit_US&hash=item462bdc02fc&nma=true&si=OqQmzjTLC%252B0PktT5EI%252FQHjqWB38%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 its totally time they repop this one, especially if the 2.0 and 6 parts are all in the same kit. jb
  12. you need to reset your preferences I forget the details, but then it will work fine. this is the only planet in the universe that I have ever experienced that problem but reseting the preferences to include this site on some list did the trick jb
  13. >Cool! Look at the passenger. She is not saying cool, she is saying COLD!!!! jb
  14. there is absolutely nothing phony looking about those bids at all. all of the participants have pretty close to 100% pos feedback. four bidders were willing to throw down > 1000$. the winning bidder bid his high bid days before the auction was over. look closely and you can analyze the bidding behavior of all those bidders. they are all 100% legit from the looks of it. do at least a small amount of due diligence before you go casting aspersions on auctions and bidders. and just because someone bids amounts you think astronomical it doesn't mean they are phony. quite possibly they have more money than you and have a whole different playing field. jb
  15. well the problem is, dates are often reprinted just as they were originally, especially during the period up to the late 80s or early 90s. so that isn't really a certain date. sometimes there are details that you can spot that will date a kit but sometimes not. mostly you have to have the experience to tell the originals from often near identical issues later on. and Tamiya and Japanese kits in general can be really tricky, as you mention they do not seem to have dates on a lot of them, or at least not in their second or third language, English. you can find reference books online and in reals that can help with research and you might try posting some photos in one of the forums here (maybe the one on kit reviews and views?) and people can chime in with info jb
  16. in my experience, all those things you mention will work. I think though that lacquer clear might be too fragile to cut apart, but I have used future to good effect and also the micro ind film stuff. I don't think its a matter of age either, I have had relatively recent decals break into a million shreds on contact with water, and ive had old decals that had yellowed but still held together fine. I pretty much try to test first with an insignificant decal if possible. jb
  17. so I guess ESCI has licensed from or licensed to pretty much everyone: AMT, Revell, Italiari, ... I do know they seem to have concentrated on some interesting subjects, rally and race cars. jb
  18. running no fenders like that if it gets snowy or even rainy would make an even neater picture. he needs that 12 reindeer drive under some conditions he runs into jb
  19. >It can be financially reasonable to repost posts on here if there were trades going on, from a few dollars worth to the >extent of thousands. For example I was going. To trade , but lost contact and address ... that's doesn't make it "financially reasonable" from the standpoint of the owners of the forum. anyway I would suggest you post a "hey contact me" post in whatever forum the trade was going on in. you got to think the other party is probably in the same boat as you are and looking to find you. it will all work out. jb
  20. I kind of side with keeping copyright marks like that intact. kind of documentation of where the model came from. sometimes because it will be such a pain to get rid of it, but I sometimes leave them in place for the archive. of course you don't want it too obvious but if its buried under the differential or something, sometimes I will just leave it there. you do so at your own risk regarding contest judges though; most would probably not like it, especially those with an eye for mold lines etc. jb
  21. so I guess the combo of a young person, a newly registered driver, and a performance car makes the premium go through the roof. 8000 pounds man that's insane! and probably if you survive the first year without incident they bring you down to "normal" premium which doesn't really seem to bad compared to what we pay in the states for mandatory insurance. but those prices you quoted were for the year, right? not a month or a quarter or anything? jb
  22. whats the hang up with the insurance on the GTI? and how come that ford was a complete loss? some emissions stuff? really, can't be that bad! what a drag! anyway great news on the license. I remember when I first got mine. then promptly got a couple tickets. don't do that! had the first year (here anyway) GTI back in 1984. was a fun car, but they have come a long ways and no comparison to what you got there. jb
  23. AtMobil, Gaute, you should be a writer! that was one of the most hilarious reviews or commentaries I have read in a long time. "Hearing Aid Beige" indeed! jb
  24. so that land rover I posted above was the Paris - Dakar rally vehicle, and had appropriate accessories some of which I used and some of which I did not. a bunch of other versions exist as well, at least one civilian use version and at least one work version that I believe I have seen. while looking for my unbuilt Rovers, I came upon this which may not have been mentioned above, another Paris - Dakar rally vehicle, but this time a range rover (appears to be the 80/81 version according to a quick glance at the history page of the instruction sheet). note that the back windows are filled in and it is a two door model, I do not think I have ever seen such a vehicle in real life but I assume they are or were more or less common in countries other than the USA. at any rate I guess that makes it have a high potential as a sedan delivery street rod, so maybe a hemi for this one. (kidding...) not a very good shot of the body but you get the idea: jb
  25. ESCI 109" wb Land Rover. I thought it was a very nice kit with some really kool accessories, but as I recall the body pieces were kind of warped. fairly easily remedied though. I have a couple others that I intend on building one of these days. No hemi though. oh I forgot to mention: terrible tires. the ones I used here were bridgestone mud and snow. thousand percent improvement. jb
