EXCESSIVE PRICE INCREASES.
Pete J. replied to E St. Kruiser50's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Just a couple of thoughts: I haven't heard of any plastic model company rocking the the world of finance with "oil company" level profits. Greedy? Maybe but I kind of doubt it. They know as well as anyone what they can get out of a kit. P&L statements are watched very carefully. These boys are as smart as any business men. They know cost levels and how much they need to get to keep the doors open. They are also very tuned in on their customers. No business intentionally moves away from their costumers. To do so is suicide. Let me ask this. How many model companies have closed their doors in the last 5 years? How many have tried to be resurrected? How many have shrunk incredibly? How few new companies are there compared to what use to be out there? No, I don't think these guys are getting rich on our purchase of kits. Some are making a living but most live on the edge. Want to kill another company? Boycott the industry! Just my opinion. -
Several mentions have been made of accessories. You really can't beat Sherline in this category. The lathe has a thread cutting attachment(inside and outside), a cross slide(for tapers), a jig for doing ball ends(originally designed for the maker of prosthetic eyeballs), a series of followers, etc. You want to see the type of work it does, Robert Bentley of RB motion does his work on a Sherline. Other notable owners include Gerald Wingrove and Augi Hagasano. If it is good enough for them, well.........

Harry - Correct me if I am wrong but this photo came from Audi HQ in New York, just before this car was to be auctioned off at Christie's. I believe that this was the car that was pulled from that same auction because of some questions about the which car is was. Originally touted as chassis 20 which won spa and changed to chassis 18 which didn't compete in that race, caused quite a stir. Pete

'69 GTO Headlight Buckets Source?
Pete J. replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here cum' da Judge! Yea, one of my favorite cars. Actually you need to decide which model you are building. The hidden head lights were a option and it looks like the one in the photograph would be one without the option. The hidden headlights were a little more recessed if I recall right. Quad headlight buckets from a 69 Chevell would be very close or the Olds 442 should also work. Incidental, later in the production run, Judges could be had in any production color, so you do not need to just go with Carousel Red(aka hugger orange). They look great in white or yellow. If you want to add something different that is easy to do, slap a set of RAMAIR IV decals on the scoops and open them up. Good luck Pete J. -
OOOOPs! Guess I should check who I am addressing. I have both Tamiya kits and the Safari car has US spec body panels. I owned a 72 new from the dealer - paid $2,800 out the door. Wish I still had it. I have wanted to build one for a while, but I need to get a couple of other projects done first. Pete

I bought my Sherline Lathe about 8 months ago and absolutely love it. More than the lathe was the reference material that comes with it. Every tool and accessory is laid out with instructions in the catalog that you get. The machine is absolutely precise- I can easily cut diameters to .001" A lot of useful accessories also. Of all of them I suggest that you get the "zero reset hand wheels. Huge time and brain saver. I bought mine through Paul at Thunder valley and he gave me a better deal than I could get from Sherline and I live about 15 miles from the factory. One other piece that might be worth considering in these tough times, Sherline is 100% made in Vista, California(well the motors come from Connecticut). Shop at home. Pete J.

So George - Are you going to build it JDM style or US spec? Pete J.

Harry - No comment! I learned my lesson

Find a Buddy - get a deal
Pete J. replied to Pete J.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hey man, I grew up with the "new" math, precalculator. Still for $50 that would be a good deal. Got to move fast though. The sale is only 7 days. Good luck. Pete -
I have used Alsa Mirrachrome for some time and am on their mail list. I got an email from them saying that they were introducing a line of air guns and brushes. Thought I would pass it along. THEY ARE HAVING A 2 FOR 1 SALE. They have a professional gravity feed double action air brush for $99. At the 2 for 1 price that is $45. Killer deal if you know someone who could share the purchase. Here is the web site. http://www.alsacorp.com/products/hvlp-spra...mo.html#vk-7000 I can not speak for their quality of the air brushes but will say that I have used their paint and love it. I have alsocalled customer service and always had good helpful advise. Good luck.

I spent a day in Charlotte January 12. Does that count? Would it help if I said I spent the day with Lee Holman at Holman-Moody? My avitar shows me sitting in his GT40

The only issue that I know of with novus is that there seems to be a small amount of silicon in it. After you have polished, if you need to apply a coat of paint over the polished bit(the dreaded rub through) you need to use alcohol to clean the surface, or it will fish eye on you.

I get it as my local plastic fabricator. Those are the places the make things out of Lucite, Plexiglass, etc. They will have it in bottles up to a quart. I use #3 and then finish it off with Tamiya extra fine.

Issue 137 complaint
Pete J. replied to 58 Impala's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Na, thats not the point! This is just like the magazine. Every article is going to yank somebody's chain and every post can cause controversy. That is just the way it is. Different points of view and opinions are to be welcomed as they add to the rich tapestry that is our hobby. If we all liked the same thing or felt the same way about the content, this would be one dull web site. Keep the opinions coming, just keep in mind that they may not be shared, and don't be offended if they are not. We all like different things and can all learn from other modelers and other fields. I learned most of my metal painting skills for aircraft guys, weathering from railroaders, detailing from....aaah, oh I don't know, other wackos like myself. When you see an article on a subject you don't like, read it anyway. I am sure you will find something you can apply to your sector of the hobby. Keep building and keep contributing. -
Airbrush conector and hose ?
Pete J. replied to dryvr12's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Been using them for years. Got the from Coast Airbrush. They make it a lot easier to clean the airbrush when you are done. I have two airbrushes and I would probably not use both of them if I had to unscrew the hose each time. Money well spent even if you only have one brush. -
When it rains it pours
Pete J. replied to 59 Impala's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hi guys. I know what you mean. I consider myself laid off at work. I am in commissioned sales at Sears(appliances). The media has people so scared that they aren't spending thus I go to work and if I don't have a sale, I don't have a paycheck. Had 4 days in the last 2 weeks with nothing! As I said, laid off but going to work anyway. I think if the news would just lighten up a bit, people would relax and this country would get back on it's feet. I don't need to start every newscast with a chart showing the unemployed and how many people are out of work today. Tell me who is surviving and I know there are companies out there that are thriving. Lets talk about that. Good luck to all of us! -
Dude - Never seen any rules- good suggestion. If your going to have rules - Post 'um! New people would not "ruin it".

Gotcha! Real - Ralph Lauren collection. Photo taken at the Boston museum. http://astro.pas.rochester.edu/~slthorndik...-March/DSC04523 Check out the pillar in the background. Only 3 of these made so it wasn't real hard to track this one down. Nice try. I thought it was one of Wingroves pieces until I did a little research and found his was dark blue. Pete J.

Just saw this guys show on Comedy Central
Pete J. replied to Clay's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I saw him when he was here in November. Absolutely killer! Achmed is great but I love Walter. His wit just kills me. We were at an Indian gaming casino and he opened the show by looking at some one in the audience and asking "Are you and Indian?" Then "What kind of Indian?" Of course Jeff said " What kind of question is that?" Walters response -- " Are you a woo, woo, woo Indian or a 'Thank you for calling customer service' Indian." That one didn't make you-tube. If you would like some more - Jeff's opener is a guitar player comedian who is just as funny. You saw part of him on the Christmas special with "Jingle Bombs". Just search for "Guitar guy" He has some mad licks on the guitar and is very funny. Pete -
Harry - I think I recognize this one. Is this one of Gerald Wingroves masterpieces?
-
Simple - By knowing someone at the company and then showing them that you can do the work. I have done a lot of work for Tamiya and it came from my building a Tamiya/con winner, and then getting to know the people at the company. My first job was the Toyota TS 020 for their ad. Short fuse, demanding client, excellent model. Lots of stress and lots of fun.

Shelby is just a plain jerk! He has been trying to claim credit for anything he can for as long as he can. Sues anyone he can for the bucks and has tried to cheat is way in an out of more things. I remember he got in a lot of trouble in the 90's for building some cobra chassis's and setting them out to rust and then claiming they were old chassis's he never had time to build. That way he could get around a whole bunch of regulation. The man is a pot calling all the kettles around him black. He just annoys the whole racing and car building community. Not much respect for the man!
