One More "Repost", '65 Chrysler 300
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in Model Cars
Thank you so much guys! Steve -
I have the MCW site & "Paintref.com" both on my toolbar so I can easily jump back & forth between the two. That way I can look at the colors I'm interested in on Paintref, & then see what MCW has to match it. It's a little more time consuming, but I'm sure the guys at MCW don't want to waste the time & effort to depict chips of every color they carry on the website. There are a lot of colors there. Plus as he says somewhere on the site, computer images are not necessarily accurate depictions of color anyway. Steve

Thanks Charlie! I guess part of the decision to use dog dishes stems from my teenage years. When I was about seventeen & becoming interested in buying my first car, I came across a 1965 Newport in a small town about 15 miles from where I lived. It was in a little used car lot. A maroon 2 door hardtop with a beige interior in fantastic condition. I remember it having dog dish caps, which at the time I hated! The main reason I never considered buying it was the fact that it had a 3 on the tree! Didn't want to go there! Steve -
Two-Tone Question
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
This is a Pontiac Art. Many of the Oldsmobiles were 2-tone. Even some of the Chevies. Buick & Pontiac.....not so much. I've also seen quite a few photos of '59 Bonnevilles with a 2-tone with the lower body under the side trim a different color than the upper. Not sure if that was an option either. Don't really like the look of it anyway. Steve -
Sharp! Not my style, but very nice. Steve

Whiskey Drinkin' Woman! One of my favorites on the album! The only song I was not real fond of was "Don't Judas Me". & even that one was pretty good! Just too long! Steve

Would anyone have any information as to whether or not this style of 2-tone treatment was available as an option on the '59 Bonneville? I thought I had seen photos of others like this, but the more I research, the less I find on it. From 99% of the photos I'm seeing, A 2-tone paint job on the '59 Bonneville consisted of, "body one color, top another". I kind of like this look, but I'd kind of like to keep this build a little closer to historically accurate. Steve

Nobody Harry! As far as I could tell, they were never even an option on the 300 in '65. When I got the kit, it had some rather crappy 5 spoke mags on it. So I had to make a choice. Either order a set of stock caps from Modelhaus, (which I never liked the looks of anyway), use some sort of chrome aftermarket wheels, which I thought would make this big luxury boat look cheesy, or go with a set of "what if" dog dishes. I just thought it would add some interest & I guess it has. Everybody seems to make comments about them. Anyway, I kind of like the look on this car. Steve -

Embossing Powder

I just blow it out with the blower that God gave me. A good soft brush will help get all of the leftover bits moved around so you can blow them out too. Steve -
Embossing Powder

You can find the same set of metallic powder on ebay for a few dollars less Bill. At least I think it still is. Steve -
Argh!! I should have known that one! Used to listen to the "Hair of the Dog" album almost constantly when I was a teenager cruising around town.....On 8-track tape of course! Steve

Did you find the metallic set Tom? I wasn't seeing it when I looked again tonight. I thought the metallics would look the most realistic. Steve -

Just thought I'd jump into the dog dish "craze" with something a little more unusual than a Road Runner or 'Cuda. Steve -
Thank you guys! Really! Steve

Heating Paint
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks guys! I thought it probably had more to do with the spray can than the paint itself. Just wondered if it might be beneficial to warm it up, or if it would just be a waste of time. Steve -

I tried using a small kitchen strainer but the powder is so fine it just ran through like water! I found it works just as well to just dump it on, slosh it around & dump off the excess. Make sure you save the "overflow" of course. Steve -
I know a lot of us heat up spray cans to help with the paint flow better. Does anyone know if it would be helpful to heat paint for airbrushing as well? Steve

Looking for a Little Input
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
It'll be a stock build with "close" to factory colors. If I use the gray & coral the actual colors I'm using are 1959 Dodge "Coral" & 1957 Ford "Gunmetal Gray". But Pontiac had similar colors in '59 called "silver Mist Gray" & "Sunrise Coral". If I use those colors, I'll be doing the wheels in coral. Steve -
Embossing Powder

I found it on ebay Tom. It's a little deceiving though. The bottles are not as big as you may think! but I recently used it on my '58 Ford & figured that each bottle would probably do at least 10 or 15 kits! With 16 jars, that's a lot of kits! Just go to ebay & search for "embossing powder" & you'll get a million hits! The "Hampton Art" stuff comes in several different sets. Pastels, neons, etc. The one I got is metallic. I have some of the "Zing" stuff from hobby lobby too. Same thing, just not as many color options as the Hampton Art ones. Amazon carries it as well. Steve
