Revell is reissuing the 'Can-Do' (Steeps) tow truck...
mikemodeler replied to Mr mopar's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
I was browsing the Tower website a few minutes ago and they mentioned a 359 Wrecker for $89.99 in the Revell section and am wondering if this is something new or did they combine a couple of kits? The last time the KW kit was out it was $100+ and the RoG rotator wrecker was even more. If someone in the know (hint Brett!) can shed some light, let us know! -
another awesome build Tyrone! I have several of these kits (68 & 69) and need to get started on building them like yours! Any idea what color you are going with?

The Price Is Right!
mikemodeler replied to Custom Hearse's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Considering those shows are done in California, i would imagine very few people actually end up with the cars as they are taxed by California. Not sure but I think you have to take delivery of the car there, you cannot live in New York and get your vehicle locally, also contributing to the cost of the prize. -
That, is a classic Smokey tale! He is the reason NASCAR developed the body templates that are used today.

That is WHITE! Nice clean build and well detailed. Maybe someday they can reissue this simple kit. -
Ghost Kits - Shown But Never Released
mikemodeler replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I believe the MPC 78 Monte Carlo was reissued a few years back as an iHobby show special. I have one in my stash and will build it some day, just like all the others! -
There is a HobbyTownUSA near me that has new releases at slightly less than MSRP and if I am in the store and they catch my eye, I will pony up the money for them. If I am looking to buy multiples of a kit or several kits, I will check with online places like Tower Hobbies or Modelroundup to see if there are any deals like free shipping or discounts on larger orders. The shows near me rarely have new releases available but I go to look for old kits and aftermarket parts.

Donn is lucky in that Kathie is supportive and involved in his hobby and that makes a difference. My wife is supportive of the hobby from the standpoint that she knows where I am and it is something that brings a smile to my face when I am at the bench. She would like to see less unopened kits but as long as I am not spending the life savings, she figures it is cheaper than many other hobbies I could have! If you get the chance to meet Donn and Kathie at a show, you will see why he is smiling! They are both great ambassadors to the hobby and nice people to talk with.

The Blazer did not have 8 lug wheels, nor did the 1/2 ton trucks that the Revell 77 GMC are supposed to replicate. I have some older 6 lug wheels in the spares box that will be used on this kit. It is disappointing that this kit is being reissued with plastic tires but thankfully there are options to replace them!

Thanks, I was thinking of swapping some wheels/tires and the plow parts to re-create a friends' old truck.

Done for a while
mikemodeler replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Andy, you are going through what many of us have experienced in our lives and sometimes a break is necessary. As others have said, this is not supposed to be a stressful hobby so if it is for you, walking away for awhile is a smart thing to do! Check in like you said and someday, maybe sooner than you think, the urge to be creative will come back to you. I was expecting to see another Gearz winning build from you soon, maybe next year! Take care. -
This should be a good one Dave, can't wait to see some more progress!
-
Nice tribute for your Dad Dave and as always, a clean detailed build! I have seen others you built for him, have you replicated all of his patrol cars or just certain ones? Thanks for sharing and keep them coming!

I will probably pick one of these up and bash some parts with the Revell GMC Plow kit to create something different.

possible Re-issue
mikemodeler replied to JLDesignz's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
To clarify your statement, what the representative from Revell meant is that they release information about new and reissued kits in May and October. It would be more likely that it will be announced at this Fall's iHobby show in October and slated for release in 2014. If the molds are in good shape without any major work needed, Revell could schedule this to be re-issued as soon as other projects are completed. Revell is known for their delays and like any other manufacturing company, if they have something else that is projected to be a better seller, that will be their first priority. -

Very nice and extremely clean, is it a kit or did you do some scratchbuilding? -
How Far Would You Travel To A Show?
mikemodeler replied to Bill Eh?'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Work seems to be more of a hurdle to me attending shows than distance. I have wanted to attend the ACME show in Atlanta for the last 7 years and something always comes up that makes it impossible to be there. My oldest brother lives 10 miles away from their venue so lodging is not an issue. I had thought about going to the NNL East this year but then they scheduled our national meeting in Seattle and I will be flying about 5,300 miles roundtrip (cross country) next week and have another flight the week after so it is out of the question. I have attended shows in North and South Carolina and wish I could hit more of them. I joined the SCMA last year and did not make it to a meeting but joined again this year because I want to support the hobby AND make it to a meeting! -

Looks like a great show and some nice models! Thanks for sharing the pictures. -
Ha Ha Ha ! Exactly my thoughts, I don't know if there is anything I have traded for that has been started!

can you name the truck!
mikemodeler replied to c-man405's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I thought I saw a resin version of that Loadstar somewhere before. I will have to check and see as I always liked that truck. -
Like so many others, I started in my early years and stayed with it until High School and girls/job/life took over. I would occasionally dabble in a kit but nothing serious until about 20 years ago when a co-worker and I walked into a hobby shop on a whim during lunch. We both bought a model and brought them into the office ( we worked for an auto parts company) and it was funny to see 6-8 grown men stand around the conference room table looking over the AMT 62 Bel Air kit! I have been deep into it since then, building a few and collecting a ton. Tried to get my son involved but he tended to go towards aircraft and my daughter built a few snap kits before discovering boys. Been a car guy all my life ( loved the stories about the Matchbox & Hot Wheels Tom!) and even have my Tonka trucks from the early 70's! I have worked around cars since 1980 and can't see me doing anything else. I even applied for a job at Revell back in 1995 but it went to a guy with airplane knowledge because they already had Ed Sexton and his vast experience and knowledge of automobiles!
