Painting in hot weather?
mikemodeler replied to ERIK88's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Some great answers already given and I would just add that you will get varying results depending on where you are painting. If it is in the garage like many of us, then early morning before a lot of heat builds in there and dust is generally less helps get a better result. While I haven't tried it yet, there have been a lot good things posted and written about using food dehydrators to help speed up the drying process and that could be a help. I would like to get one and try it myself considering it is usually pretty humid here in NC for a good part of the year and anything that helps speed up the drying process is a benefit. -
Are you painting the interior black? If so, use white flocking and then paint the interior black. I saw an article a while back where the author mentions using white flocking on all of his builds and then paints the area whatever color the rest of the interior will be. Try looking in the scrapbooking section at a Hobby Lobby, Michaels or A.C. Moore for embossing powder, said to be more realistic and cheaper.

Nice build and pretty close to the real thing. I remember we got one of those in on a trade at a dealer I worked at back in the early 80s. The owner bought it and did a tour of the US and then traded in on a new BMW! -
Rick, Not sure how he did it but I have used liquid masking material to paint wheel centers in the past. You can also use Elmer's White glue as a masking agent. Liquid mask can be found at a decent hobby shop or online, and a bottle should last you awhile.

Two of my favorite places to spend time and money whenever I am back home. Sure wish we had something like them here in the southeast. -
Niteowl pretty much nailed it. I have yet to buy a kit for the sole purpose of collecting, although my build rate suggests otherwise. A good example was the Revell Stepps Wrecker kit. I bought it years ago for about $80, one of my first online purchases. I have always intended to build it but have not made the time. Starting seeing them on eBay for $200+ and thought maybe I should sell it, after all I have had it 10 years and it still isn't built. I could use the money for a spray booth or more models and was getting ready to list it when Revell announced they were re-issuing it, for $89!!!! Needless to say it will be built one day, hopefully soon!

Thanks for sharing Tim, I have wanted to attend this show for years and thanks to you, I feel like I did this year!

Not to sound cliche', but hopefully that isn't the same as "The check is in the mail" !

I will agree with Joseph and Mike on this- if you follow directions and take proper safety precautions, then there is nothing to worry about. That being said, what is the advantage cost and results wise using it over regular hobby spray clears? Many members here use automotive grade paints and clears and while I don't, I do know that they typically are handled differently than our regular hobby paints. I would think all of the extra work involved might not be worth it unless you are clearing multiple bodies at the same time.

Looks good so far, I am sure he will be happy to have that scale version to go along with the 1:1! -
Who received the latest mag?

Have found it at two hobby shops that haven't had it before. Actually bought a copy and have read it. A couple of Studes on the cover, not a bad read IMO! -
I have found sitting off in the corner having animated conversations with myself usually gets me out of service! I was called earlier this year, sat there all day only to have to return the next day. As I was riding the elevator up to the courtroom, the defendant's lawyer did not notice I was in the back of the elevator until after he started discussing the case with another attorney. I went up to the bailiff and told her what had happened and after a brief appearance before the judge, I was dismissed from serving and on my way home. I am a salaried employee and as such was paid by my employer but was expected to catch up on my work in the evening after jury duty. I won't comment on whether or not a person receiving government assistance makes for a good or bad juror but I will say that we all need to serve. I do feel for those who are either self-employed or work hourly and are not compensated by their employer for jury duty. I have lived in North Carolina for nearly 8 years and have been called for state jury duty twice and federal jury duty once while when I lived in Illinois I was only called once in 22 years. My father is 91 and has never been called for jury duty, probably a good thing if you knew him!

Paging Chuck Most, paging Mr. Chuck Most, please see this post for some ideas! Nice find Lee, those all look to be in decent enough shape that someone is bound to buy them and restore/hot rod them.

You bragging or complaining??? Nice truck BTW! I think Tamiya sells a green color close to this FS color too! -
2 recent trades with LOBBS and Long Roof Nut went smooth and as advertised.

Tom, I am with you on this, I was merely stating that despite their best efforts, there will be some nits to be picked by some forum members here over what Mobeius brings to market. I think the the problem is that some folks rant on and on about the issues they find as if it were life or death. Simply put, should a model manufacturer be able to create a "perfect" model with today's technologies? Short answer is yes but then again I don't work for Mobeius, Round 2 , Revell etc., and am not privy to what tools they are using to create the molds to produce the kits and neither do most of the members here. I, for one, am glad to see a long overlooked subject come to market and only hope they find other "gems" that will satisfy our needs!

What you need now Lee is a couple of months off and about 200 models to assemble! Nice score, hopefully it won't go bad before you get to use most of it up!

While I have been following this closely, there was an article (probably the same one Art saw in the WSJ) in the Charlotte paper yesterday regarding this. This technology is being used to create masters and various hi-tech parts but using them for mass production seems to be costly and time consuming versus current production methods. This holds great promise of helping medical professionals possibly creating artificial organs and limbs and the article even mentioned body tissue! I have a hard time believing that the masses would want to invest in the cost of a 3D printer AND supplies in order to create a model. If people are balking at current kit costs ($25 & up) what do you think they would say to paying a similar amount AND having to create it themselves? I personally don't see me buying a 3D printer as I don't build enough models as it is to justify the cost. I could see a LHS having one and creating model kits for customers, kind of like having a suit tailor made! I like the concept of 3D printers, just not convinced yet that model companies will stop injection molding any time soon.

Getting My Fix, Store or E-bay ?
mikemodeler replied to Chris White's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
eBay, with it's worldwide reach, will always have more variety than any local store could possibly have. I have yet to purchase from eBay, I guess I am just different in that respect. I haven't seen anything on there that I had to have that would cause me to open an account and become a regular. I find those older kits at hobby shows and swap meets in the area where I live. There are several within a 2 hour drive throughout the year and what I like best about them is that I can physically see what I am getting before plunking down my cash. I have also found that trading with members here has allowed me to get rid of models for those that I missed out on in years past. Many members here are great traders and it is a way to add to your collection without spending big bucks on the bay! As I thin out my collection, I am trying to concentrate on those models I am likely to build and have some real interest for me. -
Spray Paint Stash
mikemodeler replied to slusher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Like many others, I have a bunch and probably more than I need! I still buy them despite having had an airbrush for more than 15 years. One of these days I will convert to airbrushing more, I just like the convenience and clean up of a spray can.
