Well I guess I could delete my membership and just become a lurker, would that satisfy all? Geez Harry, is the snow and cold getting to you so bad that debating whether or not my last name is displayed THAT important? I would think that there are more important issues to deal with than why my last name is missing.

What are your plans?
mikemodeler replied to Clay's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Clay, Don't forget that whatever you got last summer as part of the stimulus bill will be subtracted from this year's check. Of course you have one more deduction this year so it should be a "wash" for you. Hopefully there will be a 40% off coupon from Hobby Lobby that you can use when your check arrives! Mike -
I think Gregg himself went through an incident where someone decided to sign him up for a bunch of magazines last year-some kind of "funny" joke I suppose. While I agree that if one wanted to dig deep enough my name, address, date of birth etc could be found via the internet, I refuse to make it easy for them by withholding my last name. If I am in violation of the rules, send me to the principal's office and call my Mother! MIKE

The new Model Cars Mag#136
mikemodeler replied to Tom Jackson's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I got both magazines too but have to disagree with you. I am glad that there are different types of articles in both mags as it makes for great reading and learning. While I might not hinge the next car I build, the how-to from Bill Geary was excellent. The state of the hobby from a store owner's perspective was interesting and should be posted here for non-subscribers to read and understand why things are the way they are at the LHS. In the "other" mag, I appreciate the color guide for Mopars, even though I don't build many of them, as it will help others who do. Do I know which glue to use? Yes, but a refresher was nice and if someone was just getting into the hobby that article helps explain what many of us already know. As far as size, there was only 2 more pages in MCM than the "other" mag. I think the different style and layout of both mags makes them unique in their own ways. The improvements in MCM are appreciated as we all know Gregg doesn't have the staff behind him like the "other" one does and it takes a bunch of hard work to create the magazine. I do hope Gregg can get it to 12 issues a year but time will tell. Mike -
The new Model Cars Mag#136
mikemodeler replied to Tom Jackson's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have never been able to figure out the Useless Postal Service and how they deliver magazines! Today I got my February Scale Auto but have yet to get my November Model Cars !?!?! Clay and Bob live further South than I do and yet theirs have arrived and I wait. I am sure someone in our government can explain it to me but I would sure hate to ask! Mike -
Cleaning out the garage
mikemodeler replied to Clay's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If you would just teach that daughter of yours to walk you could get rid of those strollers! I think we all fight the same problem you have-too much stuff and too little room! I went from having a 10'x 10' hobby room in a basement, a 24'x24' garage and a 12'x16' two story barn shed in Illinois to a 20' x 20' garage and a 3' corner in the bonus room here in NC. Of course, I haven't shoveled snow in four winters and can paint bodies most days of the year without firing up the heater! The lesson I learned is: if I haven't used it in a year or so, can sell it for a decent buck and not miss it, then I sell it! Model kits excluded of course! I will be making room in the garage tomorrow so I can set up a paint booth sometime this spring. Keep at it Clay, you will find the work to be worth it once it is done. Mike -
The name is Jim Drew
mikemodeler replied to JHDrew's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That sucks Jim, you build a quality model and it gets attributed to someone else ! If I ever get my copy, I will be sure to use some white out and make the correction. On a side note, I did get my February SA today but have yet to get my November MC ?!?!?! Mike -
You are off to a good start and welcome to the forum. Be sure to post pix of the completed build and hopefully your camera will be better focused so we can enjoy them Mike

Who was looking for a Snow Plow?
mikemodeler replied to Scott H.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not a bad piece but it is a re-pop of the old plow from the MPC Jeep kits in late '60s/early '70s. It is too small for most pickups but would fit nicely on an AMT Dukes Jeep kit or the Revell CJ-7 kit. No one that I am aware of makes a newer, more modern version but some folks have scratchbuilt them. Thanks for the link Scott. Mike -
Winter is here...and it sucks
mikemodeler replied to VW Dave's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Looks like you will less leaves to rake next Fall ! Sorry that happened but like you said, only the tree was injured and luckily family was nearby to help clear the fallen tree. I had heard where some parts of New England will be without power for another week due to the severity of the ice storm. Hopefully some warmer weather will move in and thaw everything out and help the electric crews get the job done. Mike -
Looks great and it must be a good feeling knowing you are coming down the home stretch! What color will it end up being? I still kick myself for passing up a numbers matching '70 SS 396 El Camino in 1982 for $1500. Put the money down on a new 4 cylinder S-10 pickup instead cuz gas prices were going up and didn't want one of those gas hogs! Mike

Clay, Be safe in your travels and take care. As others have stated here, you, your Mom & your family are in our prayers. Hope she has a speedy recovery and all is well soon. If you get a chance, visit here while visiting with your Mom as sometimes a nice distraction like this forum can help get you through tough times. Mike

Veterans Day
mikemodeler replied to Frank Steffens's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Frank, thanks for stating what many of us feel and think. I too, thank you veterans for your past service and want to thank current members of our armed forces here and abroad for your willingness to keep us free. Mike -
Brian, Welcome to the forum and be sure to subscribe to the magazine so you don't miss out on any thing related to our hobby. In regards to the letter / reply on the Revell '69 Nova, you are correct that Revell's new kits does have its flaws. Those flaws have been debated here and I would suggest you take the time to read through some of the posts to see what has been said. While we would all love to have EXACT scale reproductions EVERY time the manufacturers' bring an all-new kit to market, reality is that it isn't always possible. I know that steps are taken to ensure accuracy, but sometimes things have a way of falling through the cracks. Some mistakes are inexcusable, some inevitable. I personally don't let most kit problems get to me and if they do, I just put the kit aside for another day when I am in a better frame of mind. Mike

Happy Birthday Marines
mikemodeler replied to Clay's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Clay, Happy Birthday to you and all of our proud Marines. You all provide a sense of security for those of us who call the U.S. home and abroad to many foreigners. I want to thank you for your service and also to your contributions here in the forum. Your Marine training shows through in your demeanor and positive attitude displayed here on the forum. My 15 year old son was disappointed to hear that his high school JROTC program was switching from an Army branch to a Marine branch next year. I reminded him that the important thing to remember is honor to his country and flag, regardless of which branch he serves under. I think he will do just fine as a Marine JROTC officer next year, much like he is doing as a Army JROTC officer this year. Thanks again for all that you do, everyday, alllowing me and my family to be free. Semper Fi! Mike -
The last issue I have is #133, JULY 2008. I tried calling the Golden Press offices but got voicemail. I left a message stating I hadn't received my copies of the mag but then again, my mailman isn't exactly known for being speedy. Not sure how to get the mags delivered faster (some months they don't show up at all) but it ticks me off to know some folks get their copies two weeks earlier than I do. I have the same problem with that other model mag too. I have been told it is the post office and how they process magazines for delivery and that they are all shipped from the printer at the same time. Funny how a guy in Toronto Canada can get his copy two weeks before me and two days before it hits the newsstand? Been thinking about renewing my subscription to MCM early as I cannot buy it at any newsstands or hobby shops near me but it sure is frustrating to have to wait while others get to enjoy. Mike

Those look great and you can put me down for one of each. I would go for 2 or 3 of each but considering I have been more of an "accumulator" than "builder" lately, I need to keep the extra cash around for more stuff to buy.

Bob Paeth passes.
mikemodeler replied to Jim Keeler model cars's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Art, What a moving tribute to a man who did so much for our hobby ! Like others, I had read about Bob but never met him. The contributions that he and many others have made to this hobby and world are numerous and gentlemen like him are rare gems. Tonight my thoughts and prayers include Bob and his family. I take comfort in knowing he is in a better place and his suffering has ended. Thank you Art for the wonderful words. Mike -
VERY NICE ! Don't worry about your English, there are some Americans on this forum who have troubles with the language also. I have a set of those Pegasus wheels and still haven't figured out a build to put them on but you have given me an idea! Welcome to the forum, there is much to learn and don't be shy. If this is an example of your skills, we are waiting for your next build! Mike

Clay, As someone who has gone through the procedure 10 years ago, I can sympathize with you on the discomfort! My biggest concern that morning was whether or not the doctor had a steady hand as I had become attached (pun intended) to the pieces in that region! The worse part for me was when the doc cauterized the "tube", I can still smell it. Five days after my procedure, I was asked to be a pall bearer at a friends mother's funeral;luckily she was a petite woman and I got to be the man in the middle. Zeb is correct, go back to the doc for a follow up and have them check to make sure the "swimmers" are gone as I have heard about several cases of "It can't be mine, I got snipped!", usually by guys in their 40's who were close to being empty nesters. Keep those frozen peas close by! Mike

Real or Model #55 FINISHED, by George!!!
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
I have guessed Real and sure hope I am right seeing how I missed last week! Mike -
Nice job on the convertible conversion and the re-styling of the body. The paint looks great and flawless. It will be interesting to see if GM will bring out a convertible version of this car as they deal with the high gas prices and hard times in the auto industry. I sure hope those pictures were taken several months ago, I would hate to think that you have snow already ! Mike

Where Do You Keep Your Stash?
mikemodeler replied to Clay's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I would take a picture of my stash but seeing how it is my wedding anniversary today, it might be my last one if the missus were to see just how many kits I have! I have my stash in three places- On storage shelves in cardboard boxes (20 boxes total= 250 kits);on the garage workbench about another 30-40 kits; on my final assembly table probably 10-15 kits. This total includes some WIP as well as sealed kits/opened kits. I have the same problem as many of you in that my intentions are good, however I buy them faster than I can build them. As far as Mr. Bastedo is concerned, I will be in the Kingsport area later this year and he better hope I CAN'T find his house! That is a collection to envious of for sure. I do remember the single guys usually having the larger collections, must be something about a lack of nagging that explains it! Mike PS- never keep your stash under the front seat, that is the first place the cops look!
