Clay, Thank you for serving and re-enlisting, we need more like you. My son is a junior in HS and is in a JROTC Marine Corp unit. He is gung ho and has his sights set on joining after school. He spent a week at Camp LeJeune this summer and hopes to get down to Parris Island next year for another week of Leadership training/boot camp. Semper Fi and stay safe!

You stand a bigger chance of having your identity stolen from the doctor's office than from here. Your personal information is a public record- ever own a piece of property? apply for a loan? been admitted to a hospital? Think about all of the people who have seen that paperwork. For about $25 a year, I have identity theft insurance as part of my homeowners' policy and they will take care of any issues that come about of theft. For whatever reason, my seventh grade daughter brought home some paperwork from school today and they asked for her social security number. My wife wanted to know why they needed that information and I kiddingly replied that with all of the budget cuts, they must be planning on getting a credit card in her name to help pay the school bills!

The Big One
mikemodeler replied to Romell R's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
With what these wrecker companies charge to fire up a rig like this I would be surprised to see them tow farther than the nearest shop or their storage yard. I have seen trucks being towed down the interstate but more likely they are the exception and not the rule. Sweet build going, any ideas on a color scheme yet? -
The Big One
mikemodeler replied to Romell R's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
This should be another "Must Watch" build and I can only imagine what it will look like when finished! There are not that many wrecker builds and having watched how Rommel has started this one, I know why- they are not easy. I have complete confidence that this will have many custom features and innovations like his other builds. To echo Jim's question- Why would a wrecker need a sleeper cab? Is it for the longer wheelbase or the occassional trip? In watching the show "Wrecked", I only see the one truck with a sleeper, the rest are day cabs and they never show them towing long distances. Thanks for the build, I will be amongst the "watchers" !!! -
2010 Carolina Kustom Modelers show pics
mikemodeler replied to old-hermit's topic in Contests and Shows
Great show and I wish I could have spent more time and money while I was there. The models looked great and a nice bunch of vendors as well. Met Donn Yost and talked to him about his DVD and I bought one based upon our conversation. I plan to study it and use his techniques as I am ready to take my modeling to that level. Thanks for the pictures, it is great to see the models again. I will say that the paint jobs on the low rider models were outstanding and while it isn't my cup of tea, I do admire the builders' skills in laying down those many colors and designs! -
55 Chevy Bel Air Hardtop: WIP (Photos Restored)
mikemodeler replied to David G.'s topic in WIP: Model Cars
Not bad for a Pepto cruiser! I have one that I want to build but in pink/gray combo. I used a '55 to learn how to refine my foiling techniques, figured it was the best one to try it on. -
Revell 1968 Hemi Dart - They're Finished
mikemodeler replied to Len Carsner's topic in WIP: Model Cars
This is yet another build along that I have watched from the start. Whether or not I buy this kit, I appreciate the detail and explanation given as well as the tips from other forum members to ensure accuracy. Thanks to Len & Bill for taking time during their busy schedules to bring us this build up. I suspect there will be greater sales of this kit as a result of their efforts.Their previous posts on the several new releases are the reason why I have more model kits than the wife would like to see. I don't know if they get compensation beyond getting early releases of the kits but I can tell you they have earned it! I can't wait to see what they come up with next! Thanks again Len & Bill! -
Got my July issue yesterday..
mikemodeler replied to Terry Sumner's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If I get my past due renewal in soon maybe I won't miss an issue! Where is that renewal notice???????????????? -
So I could renew my subscription and not miss an issue? I think the strained finances of the summer will prevent me from renewing my subscription for the time being. Sad, but reality hits and with the uncertainity of when an issue will arrive, it is one less thing for me to keep track of. Hopefully I will be able to re-up later this year.

Trendy kits = goodby original
mikemodeler replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I saw this topic and thought of the MPC Dodge Pickup kits we all built and want again that were turned into Monster Trucks. I know there are a bunch of kits we all miss but I guess it is probably going to be a swap meet or online vendor to the rescue! -
Depends on who you ask.................. My wife- Too many !!! My son- A lot !!! My friends- A bunch! Me- never enough. Over 300 at last count.

Johnny, The power of prayer is definitely at work with your wife as displayed by her recovery. I am sure she will continue to amaze the doctors and herself with her progress as she seems like a determined woman! Keep the Faith and we will all be here waiting for your updates. I am certain that you two will work hard in your therapies and be able to look back at this year as God's way of testing you in many ways.

As Bluesman Mark said, I am from Charlotte. Been here 5 years, not exactly digging this heat wave, makes spray painting very difficult! Make sure you get to CKM show on August 21. Should be tons of great models and from what I hear, the swap & vendor area is full of deals.

Marty, That is one nice looking ride and I wouldn't worry about the wiper arms. I think if you were to foil them it would change the look of the car. Nice color combo and I am sure once you get all moved in and the hobby room setup you will have some more builds for us to drool over!
-
Kenny, I will assume that you will be bringing these to the show next month, both the bodies and the chassis? If so, please let us know how much they will cost as I keep increasing my "stash" money and this will probably cause me to donate plasma twice this month! Nice stuff and can't wait to touch/see it in person.

A/FX N Scale Resin - SO What Happened?
mikemodeler replied to impcon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Gary, The tale of A/FX N resin is one of many different stories over time. The sad part is that the product was very high quality but poor service and shady practices did them in. If you see their product at a show and want to buy it, you probably won't be disappointed and should buy it. There have been conflicting reports as to whether or not they are still in business under a different name or an assumed identity on Ebay. I would caution you to only buy it in person as that is the only sure way to get what you want without the headaches of waiting for someone to (maybe) ship you something. Buyer beware! -
Art, Check with the Modelhaus, they list a resin kit for '67 Impala that uses an AMT Impala kit to finish it. Quality stuff from nice people !
-
Lyle, That is one great looking model and makes me want to buy that kit! That black paint looks very rich and I can tell you that you are very brave to paint a car that color as it can be a PITA to get it right. An old trick I learned years ago from a detailer at the Mercedes dealer I worked at was to wash a car after waxing it. It seems that waxing and polishing can lead to static electricity buildup on the surface and washing the car removes it. Sounds crazy but it does work and it can also help get any residue off that you may have missed. I think the dust you are attracting might be due to static buildup. (of course now that the car is assmebled it makes it harder but maybe next time!) Keep em coming, I always enjoy your builds and creativity.

Harry, Great question but I think you knew the answers you would get before you posed it! For me, it is because I have great intentions and really believe that I will build those kits. I was also drawn to the Big Lots & Wal-Marts when they were closing out kits and how could you not buy a kit that was only $5.00 ? My question to you: Why did you buy that Mustang last year when a Smart car would get you around town just the same? Let me guess the answer.............Because you can!

Am I missing something here?
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If I remember correctly, Michaels had their Saturday program "The Knack" where you could show up and do a make & take of a Revell snap tite kit. I don't know how successful it was but I have noticed that it was not a part of their plans for 2010. Not knowing whose decision it was to not continue it makes it difficult to determine whether Revell or Michaels would want to be a part of something similar in the future. I think a Hobby Lobby or Michaels could be swayed to join in on a contest as they are already selling kits and supplies. Not sure how far to take the contest idea at the stores but they do have meeting rooms and are great sources of supplies and it could be a family thing. Might be able to get cross-promotion with other companies/categories. Might be able to offer coupons for future purchases (Michaels already does this) but it does get some people to come back. I think a contest for ALL MODELS would be better received by the folks at Revell or AMT and could work, just need to get some folks involved from all angles (IPMS, model mags, model companies, large clubs etc). -
Am I missing something here?
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Many good points made here, both pro and con, but I think Harry's idea is worth investigating. If nothing is done, then the hobby will continue to die. The days of the LHS holding a contest are over as the number of LHS are going fast. I know that HobbyTown USA has had contests in the past, maybe some type of partnership could be struck with them? I think the concept is great, the execution might be harder, not sure. -
Looks good and nice rebuild! That truck should pull that boat with no problems. Is the hitch a kit item or scratchbuilt?
