I love the ad but has anyone found the irony in it? Wasn't there some outrage here a few months ago over Firestone wanting an increase in royalities for model car tires? Mike

Real or Model #44 FINISHED!
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
This seems a little tougher than the previous ones. I am going to say real and if I am wrong, Harry finally got me! I 'll be checking in on Friday morning to see the answer. -
Kenny that is one nice looking ride you have there! Like so many of your builds the paint and details are so great and well executed. I hope you have some of these bodies available at the show, along with that very nice '50 Chevy Panel truck you recently added. I have been eating PB&J and saving my lunch money in anticipation of buying these from you! Mike
-
Very nice build and clean details. The paint job looks very nice and the two tone really does that body style justice. As far as your English, well, as others have stated, some members here have problems with it too and they were born & educated in the schools here so that should tell you something! Don't let your English keep you from posting pictures or asking questions, this forum is about helping fellow builders. Welcome!

That is a verrrrrrrrrrry nice model. I don't remember seeing that one before so get that other one done and quick! I was back in Kenosha WI last week and there were several cruise nights at some of the drive-ins and I saw at least 6 or 7 AMC's-mostly Javelins but a couple AMX's and I think 1 Rebel! Not sure how accurate the V-8 is in the Revell Jeep CJ-7 kit but that could be a source as well. Mike

Real or Model #43 FINISHED!
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
Real, cuz like Bill, something about the photo screams "real" to me. If it is a model (or diecast), then my hat is off to whomever built it as it looks very realistic and convincing. Mike -
I knew all along that it was an April Fool's joke, just thought I would throw it out there and see if anyone else caught it. On a serious note, I did find a spray can of chrome at Hobby Lobby that does a decent job. When I get home I will have to see if I can dig it out and show some pieces that I painted with it. Mike
-
This is good info to know. I haven't tried Alcad as some have mentioned difficulties and the fact that there is a bunch of prep work involved. Has anyone tried that chrome spray product that was advertised in the latest issue of MCM? That could be a solution as well.

I Want to Make Resin Tires
mikemodeler replied to coopdad's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I have never casted a tire but I would say that you might have to experiment on this one. Try molding up a one piece mold and try casting the tire. I understand the bubble aspect so a two piece might be a solution to that. My only fear with a two piece is matching up the tread pattern. I remember some of the old two piece kit tires and how they didn't always match up and needed some work to look right. Mike -
Like Bob said about Omaha, here in Charlotte the LHS are geared more towards R/C than models. I understand that R/C is bigger bucks and the instant gratification that comes with it. My own kids have a hard time sitting down and building with Dad because of the time involved, but once at a LHS they remarked they would really like one of those $400 R/C cars because they are ready to go. I travel the Southeast so I search out the LHS wherever I go, but as of late I have been hitting the Hobby Lobby or Big Lots because I can find some bargains. I also try to hit as many shows as possible because that has been the best way to find resin and old kits here. I will be going back to the Milwaukee area in a couple of weeks and am planning to hit Model Empire in West Allis, Don's Hobbies in Kenosha, and if I have time, Venture Hobbies in Wheeling. I love these places and ALWAYS buy something whenever I am near them because they are great hobby shops. Don's is a throw back to the old days that I remember and Model Empire is very similar as well. The selection offered by all three is vast and hard to choose what to buy. Yeah, if there was a plastic oriented LHS near Charlotte, I would definitely be hanging around and supporting them but have yet to find it. Mike

LC, Don't sweat it, we all make mistakes or speak out of school. I am sure your intention was to inform, not spread malicious lies or misinformation. In time, if those that got upset with you are reasonable folk, they will understand what truly happened. I personally feel that you have been redeemed by your outstanding posts on the upcoming Nova and the WIP reports. I have preordered three of these kits based upon your reporting of the quality and detail in the kit. I was planning on just one but you convinced me to up that to three! I sure hope you can do the same for the Black Widow, because I think all of us here have appreciated the Nova posts and would like to see the same on the B-W. Hang in there, get that sleep back and remember, it is only a hobby! Mike

Len & Bill, The pictures and comments you have provided on this build have led me to order 3 of these kits as I have been very impressed with everything shown so far. The details look to be there and I envision several different versions, including swapping in a big block, maybe a straight 6/dog dish "Grandma" car, etc. Thank you for all of the separate sections/topics and answers to our questions. The lack of comments might be due to members here being in awe and at a loss for words. Mike

so i feel like i just gotta ask...
mikemodeler replied to jbwelda's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I noticed that in Jairus's sig. I imagine he will tell you off the board what the deal is instead of blasting them publicly. Gotta respect that . Mike -
Some great ideas for sure once they start shipping those Revell kits. I guess I can use those AMT versions in my stash for some late model stock cars! I am even thinking about using one of them in a diorama seeing how the front fenders are separate from the rest of the body. I was thinking maybe a "before" & "after" scene with the AMT being the beater "before" and the Revell the "after" beauty. Mike

Real or Model #37 FINISHED!
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
Looking closely and I finally realized that the pool and background are real but the car is definitely a model. The scale size of the pool edging doesn't match the car. I think I might actually be two-for-two. Mike -
LMAO ! I think that is funny! (and ironic) Jairus, I edited your post but you are dead on correct about what the swastika (and other symbols) mean to some folks and they get all caught up in being politically correct that they lose sight of what is happening around them on a daily basis. Thanks for the post and glad to see you around here! Mike

Real or Model #36 FINISHED!

Me, smart? Awww shucks Harry, nobody ever associated me and smart! I can imagine how hard it is to come up with new things every week. Mike -
Real or Model #36 FINISHED!
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
I voted "real" . I am not sure but I thought I saw this vehicle on a TV show that featured the cars of Billy F. Gibbons of ZZ Top fame. Story goes that Billy was at a rod show, I think in Kansas, saw the car and convinced the owner to sell it to him. I guess I will have to tune in on Friday to see if I am close! Mike -
When Did "nnl" Events Become Contests?
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry, While I have never entered a "contest" or NNL event, I have attended both and went for the atmosphere and chance to view some nicely built models. Not sure if anyone from the NNL East will give you the answer you are looking for, I am not that worked up over 4 or 5 "awards" being handed out at the event. As has been mentioned in above posts, the competitive nature of the human race makes handing out awards almost a given. The Milwaukee NNL is coming up either this weekend or next. Never a big show like the NNL East, it is a nice show with decent turnout. I would suggest that you venture up there and check it out for yourself. Maybe someone from the host club can explain why they have awards at their NNL. I am sure someone from the "other model mag" will be there to cover the event and they might be able to explain it also. My personal feeling is that over time, the NNL has "evolved", much like a lot of things, and somewhere along the line a decision was made to award a trophy. It could have been in honor of a deceased club member, maybe a top award based upon a theme, or has been mentioned, a sponsor was involved to help defray the costs associated with putting on the event. Whatever the explanation is, I enjoy the pictures and am envious of the skills used to win whatever awards are handed out. Not sure I would ever be able to compete on that level, I still look at this hobby as a way to escape my hectic work & family life and seek pleasure in building in miniature what I cannot afford in real life. That is my two pennies on the subject. Mike -
Stupid Newb Question
mikemodeler replied to FlyinSolo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have used Simple Green with great success. The nice thing about the stuff is that it can be re-used after you strain the "junk" off of it. I also use it to strip paint. As others have mentioned, make sure it is well ventilated and wear gloves as the stuff is strong . Also as mentioned, some of us that aren't "newbs" even have dumb questions, so feel free to ask away. Mike -
Real Or Model #33 1/3 Finished!
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
Sure looks like a well built model to me. I was thinking real until I studied the shocks and backing plates on the front. I guess I will know on Friday. Mike -
Very nice car and I love the two tone! The pinstripe is a definite must have and really sets the two colors apart! I picked up 4 or 5 of these at Michael's after Father's Day for $4.00 a piece and you have given me an idea of what to do with one of them! Thanks. MikeScheve

This has got me thinking those AMT versions I was thinking of building are now destined for a swap meet or EBay! I too remember some friends having this car in different engine/trans variations and I look forward to building several to replicate them! I guess I better start searching for a couple of donor kits for the big block versions I have in mind. I can see some extra '69 Yenko Camaro kits showing up in the stash. I better get my pre-order in before you guys buy up the first run. I am also excited about the "other" kits that were mentioned based upon this kit. Mike
-
Kenny, That looks great. I noticed on your website that this is a body you are now offering. Any chance the wheels will be available too? I will start saving my money now in anticipation of seeing you in Salisbury in February! Thanks. Mike Scheve

I found a copy of this last week at a Hobby Lobby during their 30% off sale. I haven't had a chance to open it up and compare it to the AMT version sitting on the workbench. I hope to get it done at the same time as the AMT and maybe even paint them the same colors. I would really like to build a bunch of these and just might someday! Mike
