Train Show, and Model contest pic's.
mikemodeler replied to Mercman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nice pics and thanks for sharing! That plow truck reminds me of my days living in Northern Illinois and it always seemed like the plow driver waited at the end of the street and once my driveway was clear, he would fill the end of it up! The only thing missing is mailbox snapped off of the post from the snow hitting it! -
model cars mag subscription?
mikemodeler replied to lowriderphil's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Funny thing isn't it? (it really isn't ) The August/September magazine should be here soon, of course I heard that back in late August when I sent my check in for my renewal. Maybe Gregg can update us on the status as he is the last step before it goes to print. PS- the Mustang looks nice! -
What I've Been Up To Lately
mikemodeler replied to mackinac359's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thanks for sharing the story and of your talents and knowledge. Nice display and beautiful models. I am sure Luke will treasure that one you built for him and it will serve as a reminder of how great his trip was. What an honor to be invited to the factory and be included in the festivities! -
IH dump truck
mikemodeler replied to The Modeling Hermit's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Nice job pairing the two up! Is that the recent re-issue of the 4300 Transtar Tractor? I have been thinking about picking it up for a kit bash project that is rolling around in my head. I like the color, not many dump trucks painted black, usually red or orange. -
Large collection
mikemodeler replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Rob, I remember reading about someone who had the same situation several years ago, a serious automobilia collector that had rooms full of stuff to get rid of. I believe Scale Auto did a write up on it, or maybe I read it online, not sure. If I remember correctly, they brought in a company that specialized in estate sales of this type of product so they could accurately appraise the value of what was being sold. They then held an auction where anyone could bid on the items that had been assmebled into "lots" to speed up the process. Not sure of the timeframe your Uncle is working on, but if he has time, it would be best to divide his collection up into lots instead of selling kits individually or one whole lot. Much like a car, it is far cheaper to buy one fully assembled from the sales department at the dealer than to buy the pieces from the parts department! Keep in mind that someone who might be interested in the magazines might not want the models and the other way around. The first step is to inventory what you have- kit number, maker, description, condition, quantity- and take pictures (good ones). I would then start shopping around at various buyers of these items. Fred Sterns comes to mind but remember he is going to give you a "wholesale" price as he needs to mark it up and make a profit. This will be the story with any of them as all one has to do is watch "Pawn Stars" or "American Pickers" to see the difference between acquisition price and selling price. If your Uncle is just trying to rid himself of the collection and there is a model show/swap meet coming to his area soon, he might be able to move a large portion of them there, especially if there are some desirable kits at fair prices. Then he can take whatever is left over and sell it to whomever gives him a decent offer. While I would love to help you by purchasing the collection, I think my wife would kill me if I bought something that sizable! As it stands now, my 350+ collection is "too much" in her eyes and "just beginning" in mine! Good luck and let us know if we can help. -
My 'As Delivered' 1968 Hurst Hemi Dart Build...
mikemodeler replied to ian ashton's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Looks great and might be a kit worth picking up. I like the idea of primer and minimal foiling- nothing to polish and easy to assemble! nice job capturing the look! -
Two men walk into a bar..................the third one ducks! Most of my jokes do not meet the standards of cleanliness set forth so therefore I am relegated to the sidelines. Been enjoying these though.

Nice pix Ed, those dioramas look great! Thanks for sharing.

In the hospital update - 10/18/10
mikemodeler replied to Dave Mikrut's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Keep at it and things will get better. Sounds like you have the mental part of the situation figured out, just keep up the hard physical therapy work and you will be back building before you know it. Hearing your story should be a reminder to us that life isn't fair and some have it worse than others, no matter what we think. Keep us posted! -
September Issue???
mikemodeler replied to mikemodeler's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Glad to see I am not the only one who thinks that! -
Any late model Quad Cab trucks?
mikemodeler replied to ian ashton's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I forgot about that one! I think it is part of a resin ambulance kit and it runs about $100. I can't remember if the truck cab is available separately though. I am sure someone will post the link or some information about it. Just did some searching- the place that offers the kit is SSB Resins (www.ssbresins.com). They have a kit of a late model Ford F-350 quad cab with utility bed, sells for $99. -
Any late model Quad Cab trucks?
mikemodeler replied to ian ashton's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Ian, Nothing out there in kit form and the resin casters haven't cast anything newer that a '70's or '80's model crew cab. Many of us are waiting for something to come out. -
OLLIES new store opening in nc.
mikemodeler replied to junkman1153's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Drew, There is an Ollies' in Matthews, next to the Hobby Lobby. There are others in the greater Charlotte area but that is the only one I have been to. Very much like a Big Lots, have to keep checking to see what they have. -
September Issue???
mikemodeler replied to mikemodeler's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Well, if the past is any indication of what will happen, I will get my September issue in November! Thanks for the update. -
Any updates on when the September issue will be out? When I checked with the lady at Golden Bell Press in late August she said the magazine was due soon. I know this is an reoccuring problem but it sure would be nice to see the September MCM before the December SA arrives!

looking good Clay, nice details and great color choice. Can't wait to see it finished!

The Big One
mikemodeler replied to Romell R's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Okay, now you have gone too far! This build has officially become over the top when you are doing tutorials on YouTube! Seriously, this is awesome to watch and I can't imagine how much this build will weigh with the batteries and stretched frame. The final product should be incredible and I can't wait to see it done. Any chance you will offer those light bars to us less skilled modelers? -
Future project...1969 Nova
mikemodeler replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I share the exact same feelings about these 2 kits! I think my "Old Pro" is going to end up in a diorama minus the front fenders, thereby eliminating the fit issue with that kit. Can't wait to see it done. -
your not going to like this
mikemodeler replied to Adam deCoste's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I am not a lawyer but I am staying at a Holiday Inn Express tonight! In this day and age, I feel once it is on the 'net, you have relinquished a lot of the control as anyone can take it and use it as they want. -
Harry, Did you mean white walls or white wheels? The white walls threw me. Clean build and nice details.
-
They look nice and I agree on that silver paint, it is almost cartoonish with the flakes in it! Nice clean builds and you will just have to get another '69 Camaro with the HL coupon this week! I see you are from Kenosha, I used to live nearby and travel there to go to Don's Hobbies- did he finally retire and close his shop?

The things I have needed for Modeling!
mikemodeler replied to DRG's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Looks like you are well on your way to having a nice setup. Just remember to pick up supplies as you need them. That workbench area looks very organized and thought out, you should be able to find the tools when needed. -
Their ad also said all aerosol spray paints were 25% off and I am curious to see if that applies to the Testors paints as well. Could be a good shopping week at HL & Michaels!
-
I believe these were featured in MCM earlier this year and the cost of the unit was in the $100-$150 range, although it might be higher. Portable and lightweight, these would be ideal for modelers who don't have a dedicated space to paint. I am saving my lunch money so I can get one, unless Santa brings me one for being a good boy this year

Have to agree with Lee, you are showing great improvement in your builds! The tip about black paint is something I will have to try. Keep at it and you will master the BMF, I still go back and forth on my builds with chrome paint and foil.
