Taking the Shine Out of a Grill
Bruce Poage replied to Bruce Poage's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Those were great pics. I'm actually working on the '53 Ford Panel Delivery. It will be a 3 color paint job much like a pic I saw--mica red on the bottom, a bit of silver leaf in the middle and blue on the top. Maybe it would be best leave it alone as I think the other paint will indeed "pop". -
Know your 50s Cars???
Bruce Poage replied to MikeMc's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wish I could have aced tests like this when I was in high school. Of course when I was in high school a number of those cars were in dealer showrooms!! Thanks for the fun! -
Wow! That looks really great. I've got that kit on the shelf and may now be encouraged open it open and get started. Can you pass along any suggestions on how you altered the suspension to accomodagte the 23"s.

I've got this picture of a '59 El Camino mild custom that I hope to model. It was the December picture on a Rod and Custom Calendar from maybe 2009. The 1:1 had what appears to be reversed black rims with baby moons on a lower, wider tire with wide whites. I'm looking for suggetions where I might find such a combination. Ideas?? Thanks.

So I am thinking of going way out of my comfort zone and use three colors on the current panel delivery project I am working on. That is going to call for some really fine edges and a good quality tape. I have used several brands/types but was looking for suggestions from this astute group. Suggestions??

That's it. Thanks for the reply and pictures. Your rendition is looking good. Any cautions I need to have before getting in to this project. Thanks again. -

The next kit on the bench will be the Revell '55 Ford Panel. I know very little about 1:1 engines. I would like to detail this correctly. If you are familiar with this kit can you tell me what the engine is. Thanks.

i am SO angry right now. i hate models!
Bruce Poage replied to allecb's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
What a timely thread to describe last night in the "office of plastic". I have built models since '58. I would say my skill level is good but not excellent. Modelling has taught me patience. I read every article I can to improve/add to my skill tool box. But last night it happened. Several years ago I found a Silhouette kit one of my sons started 25 years ago. It was warped, partially assembled but I was going to finish it. I dipped it and decided sto start from scratch. Lousy directions! It has been a struggle for several months. Last night the final step of glueing the two body halves together was not going well. I finally decided enough was enough. I threw the whole thing in the trash. Done! Over! I have never done that before and don't plan to do it again. A '55 "Ford panel delivery awaits. I'm excited. -
I am working on the Prestige Silhouette kit. One of my sons started it 25 years ago and its been in the box ever since. The trailer is ugly but I intend to prevail. The trailer top is warped enough the glass doesn't want to fit very well. How would you suggest "unwarping" this piece. Thanks for setting me--and the trailer top, straight!!

How timely as I was looking fo reference photos yesterday and voila--there they were. Nice work. in the mid 80's my younger son thought he would like to build a model. That is the one he picked. He got as far as assembling and painting the motor. He is a meteorolgist and interested more in science and math things. But I have kept this in my stash. I decided it was time to build. Mine won't like as good as yours but I was particularly interested in the dash configuration. The directions aren't too good but your photos help a bunch.

Food Dehydrators & Paint Dryers
Bruce Poage replied to JayVee's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have good and bad experience with resin in a dehydrator. The temp is very important and 120 is too warm. My problem was putting too much stress on the resin body while drying. I am referring to the rack you are using to support the bod while in the cooker. Be sure the rack is pressure neutral when drying. -
Got my July issue yesterday..
Bruce Poage replied to Terry Sumner's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The Pony Express didn't last long as it was too slow. But some of the horses still run in NE Kansas. Well, I think they do as I just got my July issue!! -
As I was looking at the "stash" in my "model man cave" and thinking about a next project my eyes fell on a kit started back in the mid eighties, Silhouette. I have tried to do some research on he original vehicle as I was curious what colors it was painted. The show car version appears to have two different colors in photos I have viewed. What can of info can anyone share about this vehicle? Thanks.

Part way through the assembly of the Dodge Ram VTS I discovered the firewall was missing. I search the plastic lab high and low--not to be found. So I wrote to Revell sending the name and number of the kit and a description of the missing part. They asked for a specific part number I checked and did a part number elimination--there was no number for this part. So I looked at the original sprue and described A.)where the part was located on the assembly instructions, B.) where it was located on the sprue as well as the sprue number. But I pointed out that part had no number. Please read the nice reply I received from those nice folks today, "You are correct. We do show it in our specs but not labeled on the insgtruction sheet. we are bringing this to the attention of our Engineering Department. At this time there are no plans to correct the instruction sheet since this kit was dropped from our product line. However, if the company decides to re-run the kit again in the future the part #35--Firewall will be added to the instruction sheet. Thank you for bringing this to our attendion and your order for the part is being processed. You should receive it shortly." Amen--some folks still care!!

I know this subject has been approached many times. But I can't find references to all of those suggestions and discussions. Please point me in the direction of great hints to highlight the raised lettering on tires. Thanks!

Several years ago I was able to go the the ACME licensemaker site and print off a few plates. I returned to that site today--tried but was not able to find it. What is the latest on making license plates. I think a model needs a plate. What's the word? Thanks as always. By the way, nice shirts Gregg.

My Hobby Lobby 40% off coupon was burning a hole in my pocket so I headed for the strip mall. Lucky ducky--it is only a 5 minute drive. I arrived and headed for the model section. I noticed several things: 1. Lots of empty military kit shelves 2. A lower inventory of model cars 3.A much larger selection of building and finishing supplies. Our fearless leader Gregg, had written about a new supplier of abrasives, Alpha Precision Abrasives. There was a large selection including sanding pencils. I grabbed a pack. As I checked out the clerk told me they were in the process of remerchandising the whole store. She indicated there would be more modelling items. This will be an interesting watch. Keep an eye on your local Hobby Lobby.
