"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Bob, that's pretty much the concept of this whole thread/build. -
Modern Big Pontiac Chassis.

AMT '69-'70 Buick Wildcat? Of course, that chassis probably won't be as detailed as the modern kit '65-'67 Impalas available. -

Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Fabulous progress, everyone! We might actually beat the final number of completions of Round One! (Nine) I've made significant progress on my '57 Vette, especially with a bunch of that tedious "small stuff" that's not much fun. One more weekend COULD do it! Took a couple pics yesterday but haven't yet had time to process or post them. Meanwhile, since we flipped over to Page 17, time for a status update, which goes like this: Straightliner59: Junior Fuel Dragster STILL MAKING STEADY AND IMPRESSIVE PROGRESS! Looking good! Drive on!

Very nice! What you have seems to be what's called a "promo," and what you've done to it is what we call a Glue Bomb Rescue. Thanks for bringing it back from the dead, and keep your eyes open for more great Flea Market Finds!

Very interesting! Just yesterday I bought some Folk Art "High Hide Matte Finish" Brushed Dark Gray Metallic, and today used it (brushed) on the 6-71 blower of a project I'm working on. I like how it looks, and am planning to try to paint a whole car body with some of this Folk Art paint sometime in the near future. (I'll put it over a flat white enamel or lacquer primer, and clearcoat it with enamel or lacquer, though.)

Today I heard The Most Genius Idea of All Time: Instead of setting the clocks an hour ahead at 2AM on Sunday, it should be done at 3 PM on FRIDAY. I SO wish I had thought of that!

What non-auto model did you get today?

Boy THAT brings back memories. I had those. IIRC you "subscribed" at your school for some nominal cost--25c or $1 a school year or something. I don't believe everyone got them, but a lot of us did. -
Not that I know of. I've posted some pics of my rear-end corrections in the Workbench section, but haven't started the front yet, nor written it all up as a tutorial.

I never lose an hour of sleep, I just lose an hour of usable Sunday.

Well, the aftermarket wheels/tires on that one just screams Day Two or Clone to me. I'd need to see some documentation of some kind on that one.

Couple years ago, Hemmings Muscle Machines ran a story on a resto of a '69 SS396 and bigger than life, the chrome strip is running down the body side. Nothing about it was mentioned in the article. I was gonna write in crying FAKE! CLONE! TRIBUTE WANNABE! but now I'm glad I didn't--your story raises the possibility that such a thing was actually built. About 20 years ago when I was running in IPMS circles, I got into a discussion with one of the old-timers (a model airplane guy) about the new Revell Z16 kit and how it could only be accurately painted red, yellow, or black, and he swore to me that he had a 1965 Chevelle SS 396 ("original, original paint," and of course stored at his mother's house halfway across the country) and it was turquoise. I've always assumed he was mistaken and he had a '66, or he had a turquoise '65 SS with a common 327, or someone had swapped in a 396 before he bought it, or some other rational explanation for the story, but...who knows?

As I said, fabulous score. Here's a couple pics of one of mine, in front of the box of the other one. Except for the glue damage on the windshield and its frame, the rest of the body is nice enough to just polish up in the white. Sigh.

I've just been working on restoring a survivor '69 Cuda (have never built this kit before) and now I definitely see what you mean about the grille being wrong on the kit. I'm going to just press on with the kit parts on this resto, but am definitely interested in buying a few of these grilles for some future '69 Cuda projects I have in mind.

VERY cool project, I'll be watching! I did something similar about 50 years ago with the AMT '55 Nomad, if you're interested.
-
Cool! Thanks for the lessons, guys. As my old Dad used to say, "You learn something new every day if you're not careful."

When that happens to me, I say to them, "I KNOW what I want. Do you mind if I go ahead while you decide?" Yesterday at the bank I had two deposits and an involved withdrawl to make. There was only one teller available. Halfway through my first deposit, another guy came in and got in line. I asked him, "You just got a simple check to cash or something? I got a bunch of tricky junk going on here and you're welcome to break in." "Naw," he said, "Mine's a little tricky too, I'm in no hurry, but I sure do appreciate the kind offer." See, I'm a good person. Well, actually, I'm a pretty rotten person, but for a couple minutes yesterday, I at least tried to do a good thing.

Wow! I watch them do this almost every week on Forged in Fire, but you're doing it in 1/25!

SWEET! I envy you. I have two of those, both unpainted, but one's built with heavy glue damage in the windshield area and the other's NIB but has some vinyl tire damage on the body. That hardtop is a sweet bonus. It didn't come with that kit--it didn't appear until the '65 kit. It's probably from the Prestige reissue of the reworked '63.

1962 Bel Air final assembly
Snake45 replied to minkos's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Whatever your problem is, I hope you get it sorted out. I LIKE this build a lot and can't wait to see it finished! You are making me want to build one of these, which is one of my highest compliments. -
I haven't seen one of those yet, but hear a lot of them on the radio. Personally, I'm sick of TV commercials for insurance, cell phones, prescription medicines for obscure maladies, and anything where I can't tell WHAT they're supposed to be selling (I've found if you guess Target, you'll be right half the time). I remember the good old days, when most TV commercials were for beer or cigarettes or cars named after wild animals, birds of prey, or thrashing sea monsters of one kind or another.

Looks pretty good! I NEED to get one of these for my Polished Plastic collection. I don't think I have anything in that color blue.
-
Was L79 still available in '68? I thought '67 was the last year for them, and there were darn few of those. Although I do seem to remember that Bill Jenkins' '68 Nova, Grumpy's Toy V, was originally a factory L79 test mule before he put a 396 in it.
-
The original AMT '70 Camaro annual had a vinyl top and a standard (non-RS) front end. I think the '71s were the same, don't know when they made the changes.
