  2. Interesting! Isn't the Monogram basically the old Aurora? I have the Mono reissues of the '65 GTO and Barracuda, but not the Mustang.
  3. Boy, I wish I could buy two or three or four more of them at today's retail prices. Last year at the local toy show I bought a box of Rambler Project, which had parts from two of them in it. Between them there's just about enough "stuff" to build one street cruiser of some kind (not sure I can get it all the way back to stock), and maybe enough of the bones of the other to do a '60s-style custom. We'll see what happens.
  4. I built one. It goes together okay, for its age, but doesn't really look all that good when finished.
  5. Pretty cool! And you know I love this kind of stuff, too.
  6. The trick to that is to lay a nice wet coat into those tight spots and crevices LAST. Overspray and orange peel are then easy to polish off all the nice wide open areas.
  7. Bolero Red isn't a real bright red, it's a little dark. If you airbrush, Testor #1104 Dark Red in the little bottles is a passable match. They also have this in a rattlecan as #1204.
  8. The '70 front end isn't perfect, but it's nowhere near as offensive to the eye as the '69 kit was. (My eye, anyway.)

  11. I'm pretty sure I had that Lindberg UFO as a kid. I remember the ET pilot kinda creeped me out. I also had a Monogram space station. They reissued it about 20 years ago and I grabbed another one, but haven't built it yet.
  12. If they ever DO produce these models, you can thank me, as I just laid out substantial bucks for a couple of 1G Novas in resin. To ensure their production, all I'd have to do is actually build these resins.
  13. Will be interesting to see if just the nosepiece is corrected, and if it will match up to the old Mach I body. If it does, that will allow a lot of '69 Mustang Sportroofs to be built beyond the Boss 302.

I forgot to mention, this FNF issue of the MPC Camaro had an all-new grille--it's a standard grille like the original annual, but now has separate clear headlights, which is at least some improvement. On a semi-related note, when Modelhaus had their final clearance sale, I spotted a "69 Camaro grille" on there and ordered (and got) one. I assumed it was the RS grille and headlight chrome from the original AMT annual because Modelhaus usually called out MPC parts when they're MPC parts, but not this time. What I got was a repop of the original MPC '69 annual non-RS grille. Oh well. I might decide to use it when I restore my original annual, or maybe someone one here will be looking for one someday. (The last MPC '69 Camaro I built, I used a repop of the '68 RS grille on, which fit perfectly, and call the resulting crossbreed a '68 1/2.)

  18. First off, the AMT Funny Hugger Camaro (reissued not long ago) has NOTHING to do with or in common with any MPC Camaro. The Funny Hugger's body is what remains of the original AMT '69 Camaro annual, which was actually more accurate in some ways (such as the whole RS front end) than the Revell. I have one of these and I'm gonna convert the body back to stock and build it up using chassis, interior, etc. from a modern Revell. (I also have an original annual, which I plan to restore/rebuild completely someday.) Now the MPC Camaro...I built both the annual and the Harrell FC back in the day, and still have both in their original (built) condition. (Both need to be cleaned up and restored.) The MPC annual might or might not have been made into the Harrell car, I'm not sure, but it was altered in some way and then restored back in the '80s and reissued a couple different times. These bodies were NEVER accurate from Day One as they converted them from the original '68 and never moved the body side line up, as they should have. The '80s reissue bodies look very similar to the original annual '69, but the original annual had a standard front end and the '80s reissues had the RS grille. The reissues also came with Pontiac V8s and OHC 6s, and I think maybe Firebird interiors too. Not a very good kit and I've built two of them. The last time this mold was seen was in the early 2000s with a Fast N Furious/Yenko boxing and a weird body. Some say this was an all-new body, but I dunno. The body sides look the same but there is definitely something different and weird about the roof. It doesn't look right at all. I built one of these and bought a couple more cheap (at Walmart) just for parts. Over the years I've built five MPC '68 Camaros (not counting the Harrell FC), the first in 1969, the latest about two years ago. One of these days I'm gonna get them all together and do on post on "Fifty Years with the MPC Camaro."

  21. So I've heard. This is the only one I've ever built, much less finished (-ish). I own several of the Mustang IIs and one Cougar II and one Little Red Wagon, but have never worked on them. The VW is supposed to be one of IMC's easier kits! And truth to tell, if I were starting it from scratch today, I'm sure it wouldn't be THAT big a challenge. Just trying to get a semi-presentable result from my work as a 15-year-old was the real battle here.
  22. The cowls (area just below the windshield) is also different between the Camaro and Firebird. The cowl from either an MPC '69 or a Revell '68 would have to be grafted into the Revell body. And, as you say, the '69 Camaro front fenders would need the creases ahead of the wheel openings added. Dunno if it would be easier to graft these in from an MPC body, or just build them up with putty. Building a good '69 Firebird is definitely a do-able project, and I think I even have the skills to actually do it. The problem with me is, I'm just not motivated--I don't like the '69 Firebird enough to do it. If someone came out with a good '69 Firebird new kit, I can't promise you I'd buy it. It wouldn't be high on my priority list, at any rate. Interestingly, I DO have a certain desire to build one of the MPC Firebirds in my stash, making the rear fender correction mentioned above, just to say I've built one and get it on my shelf. I have one of the oddball AMT '68 Firebirds, a glue bomb, in the stash. Sometime I'd like to get around to doing that one up as a phantom '68 TA. Yah, I know, it would be 10X easier to just do it on a new Revell kit, but I just want to do something with that wretched old AMT, just to say I did.
