What are your Bucket List Kits?
Snake45 replied to Oldcarfan27's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I seem to remember building one of those when that kit was brand new. What I most remember about it was the huge amount of platform framing and girders and guardrails or whatever they were. I seem to remember them being a nightmare to brush-paint with Testor enamel. -
The MS body roof is intact, including drip rails, but the vent window frames are gone (or at least they are on mine, which I got secondhand). The roof from the AMT '65 GTO would also be a good replacement for the Revell roof (but NOT the Polar Lights '64 without heavy modification). The '65 Chevelle MS body has a unique rear end treatment, too--the whole rear panel is some kind of gridwork--that I think would make for a cool period custom. I've given very serious thought over the years to making a full period custom out of that body using the custom body parts from the '65 El Camino or Wagon kits. And BTW, the AWB funny car body retains all the stock emblems; the MS body does not. (I only have the body shell so can't comment on what else the full MS kit does or doesn't have).

'70 Chevelle kit - Revell vs. AMT
Snake45 replied to atomicholiday's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
VERY nice--possibly the best build of this kit I've ever seen! Well done! I see you fixed the incorrect fender bulges front and rear. I recently tried the same thing on a glue bomb body. Where you used putty to blend them in, I just sanded them off completely. As I've often said, there are many paths to the top of the mountain. And BTW, since my last post in this thread, I actually finished up a Revell snapper. I'm still not seeing the huge problem with the roof that Ron does (I can see it a little, but not much), but I might have to eat my words about the cowl bulge being undersized on the Revell. I had to look at many, many pics of real ones to get my stripes laid out, and I now think that Revell might have actually gotten that bulge right, and that the AMT and Monogram kits have it way oversized. -
I LOVE the green color! But I did the interior in white and black. About all I have to do to finish it up is all the chrome work, which I am dreading. Did you buy yours on September 10? Another one just like it went early this morning for $82. That's about twice (or more) what I paid for mine maybe 10 years ago. There's the bones of a kit on there right now at around $40 with 4 days left to go. The right A-pillar is gone and there's damage to the left one. Would be some work but it's restorable. BTW, that body has one big flaw in it that's not too hard to fix if you want to do it. Let me know; I think I have pics on the hard drive showing what needs to be done and where.

I almost bought another one myself for exactly the same reasons. But then I remembered I also bought a black one at the same time, so I have two already. One or the other of them will get modified with better wheels and tires and so forth.

Thanks so much! In all my searching for the top, I completely failed to notice that it was 1/20!

What are your Bucket List Kits?
Snake45 replied to Oldcarfan27's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
At the turn of the century, I had quite a long bucket list. But between reissues, luck, eBay, a couple periods of relative prosperity, Modelhaus, and the development of restoration/rebuilding skills, I've managed to collect at least rebuildable copies of almost everything on it--and in quite a few cases, mint kits. But I can think of several I'd still like to find. MPC '68 Impala hardtop. AMT '65 Chevelle HT (Craftsman). And two of the Revell "double dragster" kits, the one with the Fiat and the one with the Bantam. Oh heck, make it all three: the one with the T-bucket, too. -

The axle in the red one looks to be the same one posted above. http://public.fotki.com/drasticplasticsmcc/mkiba-build-under-c/monogram-instructions/automotive-cars--pi/chevrolet/1961-1970/monogram-66-malibu-/ -
I saw that today at HL for the first time today, too. WELL worth what you paid for it. I paid Full Metal Retail for mine a year ago. Here's what I did with it:

Does this kit--specifically, the reissue that's currently on sale at Ollie's--have the convertible up-top? I looked at the box very carefully and no up-top is either shown or mentioned in copy. I remember reviewing a Camaro convertible kit in the early '90s--possibly this one--and it definitely had an up-top. Didn't care for it at the time so I swapped it off. Now I'm thinking it might be fun to try to convert that up-top into a phantom "formal roof."

Ollie's strike again
Snake45 replied to GLMFAA1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Mine didn't get anything new since last week. Most of the '57, '60, and '75 Corvettes were gone. Plenty of Piranhas and '94 Camaro convertibles left. No new Revells or the other AMTs I want. -
Congratulations! It took me several years of eBay stalking to find mine, and then it took me about 30 hours of careful polishing to get it looking as good as yours does right now. (I really ought to finish that thing up soon. All the hard work is done, after all.)

I think that would be an EXCELLENT use for this body. My own might well end up that very way.

What non-auto model did you get today?
Snake45 replied to chunkypeanutbutter's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Here's a couple full build reviews of that, if you're interested: https://modelingmadness.com/review/misc/vehicles/russia/kopaero.htm https://modelingmadness.com/review/misc/vehicles/russia/melrf8.htm -
I always thought the only flaw with the AMT '62 was that the front fender points were rounded off, not sharp and pointy like they should be, but I think that's an easy enough fix. I agree with your assessment that (except for this minor point), that AMT front end looks more like the real one than the Revell. Revell got the sharp points right, though. Speaking of wheel opening shapes being wrong, they're wrong on the Revell '69 Nova. They're also wrong on the AMT '72, but not in a way that catches the eye as badly as Revell's do. The angle of the rear panel on the Revell '69 Nova is also very wrong, in exactly the opposite way that it's wrong on the '67 Camaro: It sits plumb vertical, instead of having a notable backslant to it. AMT got this right. That said, The Revell Nova body seems to be superior to the AMT in every other way. I've got a project going where I grafted an AMT '72 rear end onto a Revell '69 body. I need to get that thing finished sometime soon.

Haven't tried it, but it should, and it's correctly shaped. IIRC, the grille area on the Firebird body is correctly shaped, too, and might be a near-perfect fit for a resin RS grille repopped from the original AMT '67 annual Camaro. You'd need to swap the cowls on the two bodies, as they were different, add the Camaro's header panel and do a couple more little fixes like filling the side vents, but I think overall the '68 Firebird body is more accurate than the '67 Camaro, and might be less trouble to convert overall. (Of course, it would be more expensive.)

Chevrolet engine grey paint
Snake45 replied to GeeBee's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I was wrong. I was thinking of 36375. I believe I painted that Bird Dog with 36375 (Light Ghost Gray) because a local RC shop was closing out some random Testor Paints and I bought several bottles of it VERY cheap just to use for primer. (I don't build that many Ghost Gray airplane models.) Here's a color chart I did at the time. 36440 is USN Light Gull Gray as used in the '50s and '60s. It has a definite yellow/tan tint to it. 16473 has a definite sky-blue cast. 36375 has a slight sky-blue cast. 36373 is a color I've run into a few references too, but can't really find much information on. Walmart Color Place Gray Primer is in this ballpark, too, but it doesn't have either the yellowish or bluish casts of the grays below. -
Very nice! Different and therefore interesting. LOVE the poke in Ralph Nader's eye. Well done and model on!

Looking for a match to 57 Chevy Matador Red.
Snake45 replied to twopaws's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Looks like an orangeish red. I'd take a good look at Model Master Italian Red, which is available in rattlecans (I just bought one at Hobby Lobby couple weeks ago). -

Chevrolet engine grey paint
Snake45 replied to GeeBee's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Outstanding! I was going to recommend FS 16473 (ADC Gray) but yours might be even closer. IIRC, I painted this Airfix O-1 with MM FS 36237. Looks pretty close. -
Bill, your Camaro pics are OUTSTANDING and I'll probably pirate them to my hard drive for future reference. I haven't yet modified the rear "edge" of the back end of mine, just the rear panel itself, and I'm glad I didn't until now. Your photos show that there should be a slight degree of "undercut" to that edge; it's not vertical but the rear panel itself seems to be. Revell has the edge following the same line in profile as the area below the bumper, and your pics show that this just isn't so. The kit also has the rear panel itself following this same angle, which is just wrong. The old AMT '67-'68 kit has this whole area just about right.

Very nice! The matte finish gives it a particularly evil look. I like it! Well done and model on!

Old School Retro Cool Custom '67 Camaro--Update, New Pics 10/9/18
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
You seem to be making excellent progress in a short time. Model on my friend! -
I don't remember if the one I bought came with an interior or not, but I don't think so. He does ship VERY quickly. On my body, there's a bunch of small pinholes or casting flaws along the lower edges that will have to be fixed. At the same time I also bought a "short track" body with the same roof. I have at least one '69 Cuda kit body with a very warped roof and I think it will be less work to graft the roof and trunk (whole upper body, basically) of that "short track" resin body onto the kit body than to fix the little problems on the full resin body. I'm gonna try it, anyway. Neither one came with a back window (which is oddly shaped) and he doesn't offer back windows near as I can tell. I need to take some pics of those bodies and post them down in the Resin section. Thanks for the reminder.
