DRIPTROIT 71

I had one of these pickups. Only the 1/2 tons had the fuel tank underneath. The 250 and 350 had the tank behind the seat on these year models because the frame was narrower behind the cab than the 1/2 ton's frames were. This can be seen in the photos of the 1:1 wrecker on the workbench thread for this build. I found this out the hard way when I replaced the bed on mine and the bolt holes did not line up. So, a simple gas cap could fix this if you so desired. This model is great!!! I really like it. I drove a 69 with a bed like this one for years. The 4x4 lying on the back was an excellent touch. Used that board many times to keep the chains off of plastic bumpers long before we had a wheel lift. I am hoping to build a 69 Ford wrecker like the one that I drove, and be sure that I will be looking at this build for direction on my build. Great work!!!...Brian.

I don't have the 69, but I'm building the 71 as a 4x4 (look under "noise stroke"). The frames look very similar between the 69 and 71 from what I have seen other than length. Mine is not stock, but if you were wanting to build a stock 1/2 ton 4x4 the 78/79 kit could be a donor for axles and transfer case, or you could simply get resin parts from someone like B-N-L. If I were going to make a stock 1/2 ton, I would recommend using real coil sprigs as opposed to the cast ones. It will give it a more realistic look. You could make coil spring mounts out of styrene. The original rear springs could probably be used with a 3" scale block. Depending on how accurate you are wanting to be, the front cross member is slightly different between the 2 and 4 wheel drive, and I don't remember the detail of the 78/79 kit, but on the 1:1 the steering was slightly different on the 77 and earlier models. However, if you are wanting to make a lifted version, the sky is the limit. On many of the 1:1s that were 77 and earlier models, the original parts (steering, radius arm mounts, shock mounts, etc.) were replaced with 78/79 parts on lifted vehicles because they were better and worked better with lift components suck as radius arm blocks. I like these models in 4x4. I'm looking forward to seeing what you put together. Hope this helps some...Brian
