Painting in an apartment
Againmikewins replied to njcarguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
What line of Krylon specifically? I've had some that are just too thick for modeling and I always find myself sticking with Testors. I'd love to have more quantity of paint for the same price as a 3 oz rattle can. -
is the Duplicolor Candy Apple Red an enamel or a lacquer? I thought they were all enamel paints. Looks great!

It looks cool! I'm a huge fan of this era from Lincoln. I've got 2 '65 Continental Convertibles, 1 '65 Hardtop sedan and a '66 Hardtop Sedan. The latter two are promos I've bought with the intention of scribing open the hood and kit bashing one of my '65 kits. From the pictures, it doesn't seem to have as much BMF as you're saying. Am I missing something?

Hey everyone! I decided to start another project over the long weekend and I've had this mid nineties release of the Amt/Ertl '40 Ford Sedan Delivery in my collection asking to be built. In the meantime, I've found that the clear parts tree is MIA and I'm in definite need of finding it. The body will be a gloss black. The white walls were hand painted with Model Master acrylic white. The wheels were shot with Duplicolor Universal Black and then cleared with Testors Wet Look Clear coat. The interior was shot with Testors One Coat Lacquer Root Beer and then brush painted Testors Gloss Wood. I'll do the detail painting for the brackets and run an acrylic mahogany wash over it and see what comes of that. I used white glue and brown embossing powder to simulate carpet. I sprayed the chassis with Krylon Flat Black, detailed it with Testors Flat Brass and Model Masters steel. The Flathead V-8 was painted with Testors Zinc Chromate and detailed with Testors Flat Black, Gloss Black, Flat White and Flat Bronze. I'll make some more progress tomorrow after work. I wish I could bring it with me! Goodnight everyone! Thanks for looking!

Wiring question
Againmikewins replied to Againmikewins's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thank you all for the schematics! They all help tremendously! -
I was almost done with this kit. I've been working on 4 different kits. 2 had bad paint jobs and are soaking now. Another one has good paint and I'm afraid to shoot clear because I'm worried about ruining it. This GTO had a solid paint job. 2 coats of Tamiya primer, 3 coats of Testors silver and then I shot a coat of Testors One Coat Clear Lacquer. This is the result I've got now. Will wet sanding fix this? I'm extremely discouraged at this point.

I'm currently working on this kit and I see a lot of issues with the interior fitting right. The door jamb line doesn't look like it lines up with the body. There are no notches to stop the interior bucket from sitting too high. The fenders are fighting me a lot as well. I do like that your picture explained to me what to do with the bumper brackets that don't ride properly. Looks like you cut them off the chassis. The AMT instructions stink for this kit.

Wiring question
Againmikewins replied to Againmikewins's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks for these schematics, guys! I'd assume that running the positive battery cable to the firewall or to a hidden place under the fender wall would be inaccurate. Where do you guys normally send that wire to? I'm also wondering if I should bother drilling out my starter to accept the 30g wire. -
Hello all! I'm currently in the process of building a Revell Parts Pak Ford 427 motor. I've drilled the intake manifold and distributor to run my spark plug wiring. This kit has an ignition coil and a starter. I know that the center wire on the distributor plugs into the the top of the ignition coil. My question; where do I run the wiring from the positive battery terminal to the starter and then to the ignition coil? I've been reading and looking at pictures on Google, but I'm not getting very far. Thank you all for any help.

I'll check it out! Thanks!

Looks great so far! What size is the aluminum tubing for the driveshaft? It looks like a nice touch.

This is making me wanna build one of these kits! Looks great. Did you airbrush or rattle can any of the paint with this kit?

I'm currently working on this kit. I bought it at Walmart and think this was the 3rd kit I bought since getting back into the hobby. I'm still a rookie and by no means anywhere near the experienced builder level. I'm totally disappointed with this purchase. I've built the 64 and that went together well and I've got an AMT '65 waiting in the wings. I should've passed on this one. I pumped to build a nice muscle car and specifically bought the AMT red line tires for this kit. Decided I'm going to save those for a better kit! I feel like the body detail is pretty solid and there was little flash or mold lines to deal with. Everything else may as well have been flash with model car parts that needed to be trimmed. I've gotta figure out what to do with the exhaust hanging so low. It looks silly. I'm also gonna have a heck of a time with the grill and headlight buckets sitting right. I built this to clear the bench while I wait for the purple pond to fix the paint jobs on my Impala and Thunderbird. I just wanted to build something in the mean time. Now I just wanna finish it, put it in the box and start something else. Here's where I'm at now! Just a mock up while I was waiting for the engine to set.

Looks like I'm asking Santa for a printer! I've never owned one and I'm 30 years old haha. I will try the dabs of silver, white and clear as well. My only issue with that is figuring out how to just get a little bit of each into a mixing tray without making a mess.

that's an interesting idea! Do you have a picture of this?

I've been trying the Testors Clear/Window cement for this approach and it just isn't working. When I go through to scribe the excess out, the rest peels up. I also thinned out some white acrylic paint and tried that, it didn't look right and I scrubbed it out. I then tried mixing some clear glue with the acrylic paint on a scrap grill and it just didn't work out. It peeled off. Will Elmers white glue work better than the Testors clear glue?

I could spend 2 weeks on mine and it still wouldn't look this nice! Great work! I have '69 and '70 Galaxies sitting on the shelf right now. The '70 4 door is waiting for the Modelhaus conversion kit to arrive! I love the big Ford cars from the mid 60's to 1970.

Those two builds look great! Sounds to me like you are in the same boat I was in 3 months ago when I decided to start building again after a long time away. What brand of paint is the grabber blue on that Mustang?
-
This kit seems a whole lot cleaner than the MPC '67 GTO that's on my bench right now. I should've looked into this one! Oh well, clearanced at Walmart so I should stop complaining.

Does tha food dehydrator dry the paint quicker so you can wet sand or shoot clear sooner? Does it cure the paint?
-
can I get away with using this gauge wire for battery, brakes and other things?
-
I just split an Ethernet cable. Are the wires inside the insulation close to scale for distributors/plugs? What else is roughly that scale in the vehicle? I've got tons of wire laying around and after the DAAM show today, I've got some pretty clear ideas that will save me money. ?

I used the Vallejo acrylic black wash on my '64 Merc and I really liked it. To me, it makes the chrome look more realistic.
