"Mist" coat coverage question...
Againmikewins replied to Againmikewins's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks for the tips! I ruined the impala (again) and it's back in the pond. I used Tamiya primer and was impressed with the coverage, I'll be heading to The Model Cave on Wednesday for some of their colors. -
I'm not sure if I've posted in the right area for this subject, but I'm excited to share my step-son's first project! We went to Hobby Lobby and he picked the Revell Snaptite Gravedigger Monster Truck as his first kit. We also got him a '97 Ford F-150 Flareside and a '57 Chrysler 300c Custom to build. I wanted him to follow the directions on the Snaptite so the future projects would make more sense. He's currently assembling and painting the engine and chassis of the Chrysler now. It's a nice escape from the projects that I'm currently involved in. Here is his first build!

I'm really not happy with the overall quality of this kit and it's bumming me out. I find myself rushing through to finish it now, even though it was supposed to be an experiment. Heres a mock up. Still have a lot of painting and sanding and clear to go.

Hey there all! I've been racking my brain and discouraging myself from finishing any of the three kits due to a lack of confidence with painting. I've already stripped my first project (AMT 1964 Impala SS) and started again. Since then, I've torn down 4 older builds and stripped those down with the hopes of saving those kits. I understand cleaning the body properly and sanding it. I understand the primer and wet sanding process. I also understand prepping the paint and the effects of weather. I don't understand the actual process of applying color coats, sanding them properly and clear coating. Can anyone break this down for me? Here are my first attempts! Is this a proper first coat? I'm using Duplicolor automotive enamel over Duplicolor primer/sealant. Thanks for any tips and criticism in advance! This is really bumming me out.

Well, I've got the first coat down! I went with Duplicolor Light Blue metallic, it looks pretty close to the '64 Mercury factory Glacier Blue and Tiffany Blue. I've got three projects that I've been working on and I'm happiest with this one. I'm wondering if this is too heavy for a "mist" coat?

I got some work done today on the body. Thanks for the advice about the mold lines! I wet sanded the primer with 1000 grit and nailed the mold lines with some 320. While spraying the final coat of primer, I dropped the hood on the floor. Now I've gotta sand down that mess! Heres the mold lines, at least.

Love that interior! Can't wait to see more! -
Here are some of the potential color choices. A mixture between Duplicolor and Krylon Short Cuts enamel.

I made a little progress tonight. I'm still undecided on the interior/exterior colors, but it's too humid to spray tonight. I'm leaning toward a couple different blue colors I've got. I'm not going to detail too much on this kit, seeing as everything is molded into the chassis, engine compartment and fire wall and I'm still a rookie. I black washed the grill and wheel covers using Vallejo Acrylic Black I'm pretty happy with the outcome there. I also drew the white rings on the tires using an acrylic gel pen and a stencil. I'm not too pumped with those, so I'll probably soak them and start again. The engine block was painted with Testors Satin Black. The transmission and headers were painted with Model Masters aluminum. The valve covers that came with this kit were chrome plated, so I just went over them with Testors acrylic gold metallic. Finally, the air cleaner with Model Masters Ford Engine Blue. The chassis, firewall and other items were shot with Project Source flat black from a spray can. I think I paid $2 for it. I'm happy with the results. I'll detail those pieces later on. Thank you all for the tips and suggestions regarding the mold lines. I think I rubbed them out pretty good. Since I'm not doing a lighter color, I'll stick with the gray primer. Stay tuned!

Oh yeah! I also shot the interior with Krylon short cuts flat white. I figured I'd save a couple bucks over the Testors flat white. I've decided to go all white with red accents. I'll let this dry, mask off and hand paint with Testors red and then shoot it with clear coat.

I've made a little progress on the rest of the kit. The body will have to wait until the barometer drops from 89% in the Detroit area. I black washed the grill with Vallejo acrylic wash. I'm happy with the outcome. A true bummer for me is when I have a kit that has literally EVERYTHING molded in one piece. I'm still a rookie with detailing, so all I can do is free hand the exhaust. I used Model Masters aluminum. With my nerves still calmed, I painted the tail lights. I'm happy with those results. I'm still on the fence with this white wall game too. I have a 3 pack of white acrylic gel pens that I tried and they didn't cover so well. I ended up going back over them with a detail brush and Testors enamel flat white. Now they'll sit and dry for eternity, at least from what I've read on this forum. I would have had a picture of the engine, but I'm currently waiting for the paint to dry so I can do final assembly there. I'm glad I trusted my gut and not the box picture. I went with Model Masters Ford Engine red there as opposed to the Ford Engine blue like the box. Thanks for the advice and feedback. I'm going to keep this one "out of the box".

Will be following this build! Looks great so far

if you wanna get rid of it, I'm your guy! -
Thanks, man! It wasn't the easiest thing, but get a bunch of toothpicks and have at it. I've stripped 3 different cars this week and the panel lines and door jambs aren't an issue. The vents however, are a different story. Just hoping for the best there, which is why I'm using a primer/sealer. The interior is Testors Model Master Fabric Tan out of the spray can. The body will just be a plain old Duplicolor black and then shot with Duplicolor Clear. I won't be using BMF for this, so I'll mask it off and paint the trim chrome. I know it's not realistic, but I'm not trying to compete haha. I've got the '60 Ford Starliner that I plan to use BMF on.

I will give it a bath today! I didn't realize how thick it went on until this morning when it was dry. It was still somewhat wet when I took the photos, so I was hoping it would lay down. When I went to Autozone, I saw plastic primer and thought it'd work. I now have the Primer Sealer from Duplicolor. The reason the headlight bezels weren't there was because they were already lost. Dumb rookie mistake of losing them in the soapy water when I was rinsing the oil off of them and they disappeared down the drain. I've got a set that should be arriving today along with wheel covers for my '70 LTD conversion I'm doing. Gardner44 hooked me up with those. I had actually lost hope in replacing them and decided to try my hand at using the '57 Fairlane 500 headlight bezels and adding some putty and filler. It actually looked pretty good. Then Paul came to the rescue with a spare set and I scraped them off. I'm excited to finish this car. I stripped the chrome off of the engine parts and will prep them for paint today. Then I'll work on the interior. Since I'm just getting back into this thing, I think I'll hold off on engine detailing, outside of accurately painting it. I'd rather do that with a kit that already has more detail. Nothing bums me out more in this hobby than the old AMT chassis that everything molded in.

thanks for the tip! I have a couple hours after work today that I can burn, so I'll try and find that color. Will Krylon play nice with Duplicolor primer? I've heard it's generally bad to mix brands.

Could you please post some pictures of your complete conversion? I've got the Galaxie police interceptor and plan to buy the modelhaus conversion kit. -
Looks like I've gotta get some practice in with the 3m tape!

I've been looking at this kit at a couple shops. This kind of makes me want to buy one. I've got three of Amt Fairlane 500 kits. I LOVE the '57 Fords!
