A tip of the hat to Joe Ford for these two. They were both on my "want list". Not Holy Grail stuff, just wanted them. Joe made me a good offer for them and we closed the deal. Thanks, Joe! .

Chrysler factory AFX cars (12 of them), paint
smhardesty replied to fiatboy's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Ah-Ha! I've been trying to find a way to create the color of the air filter housing on a '57 Chrysler. Thanks! I just need to figure what color top coat to put over gold. -
Awesome looking build, Bill. Great color. As for decals, how about just adding some manufacturer advertising decals and the class lettering? The piecrust slicks take you back to the 60s and a lot of 60s gassers didn't have extensive lettering or advertising on them. Just a thought. 2 thumbs up on the car!

Magnesium is one of the vitamins and minerals that diabetics are usually deficient of. One of the others is vitamin B-12. The docs and all the nutritional gurus try to get you to add different foods to gain those naturally, but will also agree that supplements help. I looked into medical marijuana for relief of the pain I have with my cervical vertebra and the headaches it causes. That's a slippery slope for me. First, I receive my medical care from the VA. As far as I know, they aren't anywhere near ready to consider medical marijuana as a possible treatment for pain. Then the second problem is gun ownership. Illinois has actually confirmed that it is NOT a problem to hold an FOID card and use medical marijuana. The problem lies with the Federal boys. The Fed still refuses to accept medical marijuana as a legitimate medical treatment and still classifies marijuana as a controlled substance and therefore refuses to allow medical marijuana users to legally own a gun. It's a tangled mess for sure, and I'm not about to step into it. I'm one of the few that still receives opioid prescriptions for pain management. As long as I still have some type of control of pain via the VA I'll hold off on trying to get a medical marijuana card. That's always an option though and if the pain got bad enough, I suppose I'd reconsider gun ownership and CCW. It's amazing what real pain will do to a fellow. That's another reason I get so enthused when I find something like this Magnilife cream that actually works.

Yep. That's one if the things this Magnilife cream does, moisturizes the feet and it's safe to use between the toes. My podiatrist and I are discussing when to start a series of surgeries to correct the Pincer nails I have. With Pincer the nail doesn't grow flat or slightly curved like normal. Instead they grow more 'C' shaped and become severely ingrown. Up until now I have always split the side of the nail with a pocket knife, then ripped the ingrown portion out. No more of that. With my diabetes that's a sure fired way to a serious infection that could cost me a toe. The podiatrist will only repair 2 toes at a time because it's pretty darned painful for one and he only wants 2 toes to watch heal at a time. But the good news is we only have to do 8. Both my little toes are fine. Go figure.

No. There is no lidocaine or other "cain" ingredients. This stuff is homeopathic and the 3 active ingredients are things I've never heard of or seen before. EDIT: I got to thinking about what your message was after I posted the reply above. Salonpas is for muscle and joint pain. This Magnilife DB cream is for diabetic foot pain like pins & needles, burning, and itching and helps relieve numbness and tingling. They're 2 products for different needs. Diabetic neuropathy is a horse of a different color. The nerves in your feet (and hands) are damaged by diabetes. The result can be slight numbness and tingling all the way to severe burning and sharp, shooting pains.

No dumb questions here. We all learn a little from each question. -
Thanks. You just made my wife and I tickled for the rest of the evening. After the laughter subsided, we exchanged comments about how totally screwed up our society is today. Yep, we really appreciate the chuckle.
-
Trust me when I say that neuropathy in your feet just kind of slips up on you. I started out just having cold toes. I thought it was caused by "thin blood" due to all the medication I was taking. Turns out I was wrong. I also had in my head that neuropathy just hit people that had real problems keeping their diabetes under control. Wrong again. I do very well keeping it in check and have very few really bad A1C readings, but here I am with feet trouble.

Kind of a long way from model building, but I found something that I think is worth sharing. Like many others, I have a fair amount of diabetic neuropathy in my feet. Mine is mostly numbness with tingling, but off and on I have the burning, especially in my toes. I have discussed it with my wife a couple of times. Last Friday at Walmart she happened to notice a box that said, "Pain Relieving Foot Cream" so she took the time to investigate just a bit. After she read what it said on the box and checked the price she decided to buy a jar for me. It's made by a company called, "Magnilife DB" and it says it relieves tingling, burning, itching, shooting pains, and sensitivity. I kind of took that info with a grain of salt but started using it Friday evening. I've been applying it 2 or 3 times a day. It really does work, or at least for me, it has. It hasn't relieved 100% of the numbness, but it did totally relieve the burning I had. My feet feel a whole heck of a lot better. Don't know if it will work for you, but for only 15 bucks it's worth a shot. As I said, this is a long way from model car building, but with as many members on this forum as there are I'm sure there are at least a few that suffer from neuropathy. Maybe this will benefit at least one or two of you.

I did some more Internet research and couldn't turn anything up. I'm leaning towards either a single race team or a shop doing work for 2 or 3 teams being responsible, but can't find anything to prove, or disprove, that idea. Very nicely done car, by the way. Extremely neat and clean build. Thanks for sharing. -
Absolutely superb craftsmanship. Your work is quite stunning. Beautiful paint job. So smooth and shiny. 2 thumbs up. Love to see your work. Thanks so much for sharing.

I have no personal knowledge of what they were made from. I just quoted what is in that book. As I read through it, I took a lot of breaks to do research on the 'Net to kind of supplement what I read in the book. To the best of my recollection I never found any errors to speak of, at least nothing major. I hadn't thought about it, but you're right about magnesium being kind of brittle. Would they possibly have used magnesium because the cars were never intended to be street driven? And maybe only certain cars ended up with the magnesium K-members because they were race prepped in the same shop. I suppose it's possible that 3 or 4 cars happened to all get prepped in the same shop and that shop did a replacement on K-members and oil pans and just happened to paint them yellow, possibly to watch for cracks like you mentioned. I think the first step would be to find out if Jeffrey knows which cars had the yellow painted parts. If we could narrow that down we could then find out where they were race prepped. -

I just completed reading the book, "Maximum Performance" a couple of weeks ago. I didn't recall any mention of any special oil pans being installed, so I have just now finished reading that chapter of the book again. I didn't find any mention of special oil pans being used on the regular '65 R01/W01 Hemi A990 Max Performance Engines or on any of the 11 (some say 12, some say 13, and there were at least 2 built outside of Chrysler's control) A/FX cars. That doesn't mean they didn't receive special pans, only that this book doesn't mention it. It also doesn't mention the K-members being painted any particular color. It states that the K-member was a "specially built lightweight thin stainless piece with front reinforcements for the torsion bar connections". Maybe that painting was done at one of the garages that did the prep work on a few cars. After Chrysler cut them loose there was quite a bit of work needed to have them race ready. Just a thought. Had another thought. Do you remember which cars you noticed the special oil pans on? Maybe you could then track those cars to whatever shop prepped the cars. If they all came through the same shop, maybe the mystery would be solved. -
Nice. I've got to add one to my stash at some point. Was this one complete? Any really major goof-ups? What's your plan for it?

Not sure, but as totally befuddled as he was I can only imagine it was quite the tale. The look on his face really was priceless. Without a lot of detail, some societies view that discharge the same as other bodily discharges. For someone like him to see a fellow "save" his waste and place it in his pocket would be a total shock. Now I'm ticked at myself because I just can not remember the Pakistani's name. He was on my shift for a couple of years. I can see him in my mind plain as day, but can't recall his name. Gosh, it's only been 40 or 45 years. You'd think I could remember that. LOL!

Wow. I'm on my phone right now. I can't see well on this dinky screen. Can't wait to get on the laptop to get a good look at this thing. Looks great as far as I can tell.

Depends on where I am and what I'm doing. Both vehicles have a box of Kleenex. The wife always has Kleenex in her purse, and if I've been having allergy or cold symptoms I'll carry a pocket pack of Kleenex. On the other hand, if I'm out in the yard or somewhere else in the great outdoors, a finger on the side of the nose and a good huff and blow solves the problem.

There are a whole bunch of things we, as a society, do that people from different lands find extremely strange. The funniest I remember was while I was still in the Army. I was a shift leader for the 1st Cav computer center and we had a problem that required bringing in some programmers to fix. One of the guys on my shift was originally from Pakistan. He was a very soft spoken and mild mannered fellow. During the evening, one of the programmers, a Staff Sargeant, pulled an OD green hanky out of his pocket, blew his nose quite loudly and fiercely, then stuck the hanky back in his pocket. The Pakastani looked at me, then the SSgt. then me again. He then looked at me while pointing at the pocket of the SSgt. He just could NOT form enough words to get a sentence out. It suddenly hit me what had him all dumbfounded so I asked what the problem was. He simply asked, "You KEEP that in your pockets in the United States?" It took 15 minutes for us all to regain enough composure to carry on. He WAS right. I'm not sure when, but I quit carrying a hanky not too long after that.

Having owned a '67 notchback in days gone by, the '67- '69 body style is my favorite. Really like the level of detail you're applying here. Looking forward to watching the progress.

Would it bother you?
smhardesty replied to mchook's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You're just not addressing the question that Mark asked. He simply wanted to know if it would bother each of us. Your answer should be either, yes it would, or no it wouldn't. You seem to be more concerned with the "other guy", the buyer. As for that " other guy", you're making assumptions about the situation you couldn't know anything about,,,,,, UNLESS you were at that contest/show, had a copy of the rules, and then heard the "other guy" take credit for the build, OR knew for a fact that he NEVER told anyone who the builder was. Just go back to the very first post in the thread and read what Mark said. Then read his latest post. He specifically states he doesn't know if the guy took credit for the build AND for him "it's OK either way". I could quote a couple others and reply, but this covers what I'd post there as well. -
Just won this on eBay. Got a heck of a deal on it. Not for sure exactly what I'll do, but gasser comes to mind. There is a hard top kit in the box. Regardless of what I do with it, it will have a hard top on it. I couldn't pass it up for 5 bucks and change. .
