This is it for today. The cage is close to done. The rear kickers came from an AMT donor and went right in. I added 2 vertical bars by the side glass to give the cage more strength. The front cage piece was an abomination, so out that went. I added 2 bars up front and have to make up a diagonal bar. The seat, also from the donor kit, was modified slightly. Steering column is aluminum tubing. I used an old NASCAR radiator to make a new one. I'm waiting on a 3D printed big block. The kit one was awful, especially the headers. The new one looks to have similar headers. I also have a big order coming from Ron Coon Resins.

I think the truck arm rear is more period correct than the leafs. Plus the rear is too high unless you do what I have done.

You did a lot of what I had to do on mine. I still have a couple of cage bars to add. I ditched that "cow catcher" front cage piece. I have a 3D printed big block on order. The way the heads are configured, getting the headers in and doing plug wires is very hard. I have a SBC I was messing with, but the headers hit the cross member. The 3D printed BBC with the headers should clear it.

I have some Kings Row decals and the kit decals are pretty nice. The 1973 Benny Parsons car, in red, shows a 427 decal on the hood. The kit 427 is awful, I have to see if I have another around. So using the 1973 decals on the slope nose would be wrong... be nice to see if anyone notices. If this builds up decently, I may do one of my MANY southern stocker Buicks as a late model.

Like I need another project, oh well. This is the latest re-pop of the old MPC Southern Stocker-ish kit with the slope nose Laguna body. I feel bad for any kid tackling this gem. Instructions are poor, some items like the rear cage kicker bars are missing. The dash was so bad, I made my own. The basic cage went together okay. I made features to locate the body to the chassis, angle plastic along the rockers, a bar across the rear to support the chassis. Extended the rear of chassis by 3/8" to close the gap, made a tab to locate the bumper, there was nothing there. The dash came out pretty good. I'm using Model Car Garage gauge set MCG 2098. Lots of parts were taken from a WC donor kit. The big block that came with the Laguna is awful. I'm doing a fit check with the SBC from the donor if the headers work out. I'm using some bigger PPP period correct tires and wheels. I have to play mix and match with the wheel backs. I dropped the rear by 1/8", it sat a mile high.

My buddy had a '61, what a piece of junk. It was his mom's car and his dad NEVER changed the oil in it. I helped him change the valve cover gasket and do an oil change. The valve springs were all but visible under the coat of sludge. I talked him out of cleaning it off. The oil filter was the OG from '61. It weighed around 4 lbs and was 100% blocked up.

I have the juan4you chassis. It is pretty nice and cleaned up well.

3" of snow with a layer of ice under it on Long Island. 7 degrees this morning, already fed the birds. I'm not going far today.

Late 80s F 250 small hubcaps
bobss396 replied to junkyardjeff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Some of the Moebius kits have very nice hub caps, probably older than you want. -
I save up old red plastic sprue to use in general. The source of these was a clear red plastic grille insert from the AMT '37 Chevy kit. It already had the curve in it. I sanded off the raised part, got about 95% of the shape and cut them off with a razor saw. I even polished them up before the last cutoff.

Very nice. I have 2 AMT kits going and a Revell one sitting idle. For the resin one, I'm waiting for some 3D side pipes. But that is moving forward. I also have a resin '51 to do, that is made for the Revell kit. Great choice on the color, it will look amazing with some clear over it
-
I'd say so. It goes on very well and I tend to have a heavy hand with any paint.

This is one of Norm's resin grilles. I shot Tamiya gloss black over it, the resin itself has a good surface, as supplied. I let it sit for a day, took it outside and shot the chrome over the black. It really took very little, one major pass to get 100% coverage then shot it straight on before I took it back inside. The can sprays very well. I did heat it up in hot water first.
-
Ok, hope this is final primer. I'll give it until later tonight to look at it. The Revell chrome spray came out better than expected. I'll try to take better pictures of it.
-
Thanks. I still have to poke a few more holes in it. It wasn't much work to make.

This is from a Charger kit. 383 or 440.

I would look around on eBay. At least you will likely not get skunked on the deal.

What was your first truck model?
bobss396 replied to Mike77's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It has got to be either a Monogram hot rod pickup when I was around 7. Or an AMT 1934 Ford I got when I was 9. -
Michaels getting rid of models?
bobss396 replied to gbdolfans's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The one by me looks to be barren of almost anything as of last week. This one has the self checkout. The kiss of death for many a retail store. -
Need suggestions for Chrome paint for touchups
bobss396 replied to bluenote's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've used BMF in some cases where it doesn't show much. -
Ok, back to work on this gem. The engine just about fell out of it, so I'm making new mounts up. The exhaust was loose too. I had forgotten I prepped it for sneaker pipes, I have some 3D printed side pipes on order. I may omit the under car exhaust entirely. The trunk lid had a license plate recess, I moved that down to the rear valance. I blocked up the exhaust notches too. The body work is close to complete, I need to squirt more primer on it. I just washed the body. Paint is a Mopar touch up spray. Wheels will match the body color, I machined up some trim rings a while ago.
-
More work on this one. I'm down to painting. I sanded off the side trim, also on the hood and added a center strip made from .040" half round. On the body I had a minor ghosting issue since I'm using a lacquer paint. I used a Mopar touch up paint I got on eBay. Much better than Duplicolor sprays.

60's Stock Car Steelies
bobss396 replied to CA Whitecloud's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I buy the PPP ones on eBay. One vendor sells them with free shipping.
