Bench Rage! Have you ever lost it?
kurth replied to Chillyb1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is a hobby I do for relaxation. Typically if I run into a frustrating problem I remind myself this is a hobby and think it over, or just walk away. The one time I wanted to Throw a model a cross the room was the Trumpeter monte carlo. I got to final assembly and the thing had a ride height that resembled a raised SUV. At first I was really mad, then, it turned into dissapointment so just walked away. I realized it was my fault for not double checking during pre-assembly. -
My Reissue wishes have been mentioned already but I just want to re-iterate in case anyone from revell or AMT/MPC is watching monogram 1/8th cars - the vettes, the Trans Ams and the Camaro MPC Volare , monza, vega Dodge Van with a correct grille and the MPC 1/16th scale cars like the 80s trans am, the 79ish trans am, and others I can not recall at the moment I would welcome 70s subjects that we have not had for a while

Any 70s subjects would be great, the Maverick, caddies, Torinos. Oval track Torino racer reissue while we are wishing. Thanks for your efforts! -Kurt

"Holy Grail" Models?
kurth replied to Billy Kingsley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have tracked down most of my Grails, either through long awaited re-issues or e-bay hunting over the years. The one I did not want to spend the money for was the clear body 1/16th Petty Charger. It has been implied that it may be coming back, so I am glad I did not spend $700 on ebay for one. Though I would not mind the 1/16th maverick someone posted earlier in this thread, that is really cool. I would like to see what ever is left of MPCs kits of the 70s continue to come out, Volares, Pintos, Vegas, Chevettes, Vans, etc, cars which were common place and just unremarkable at the time, but are now classics, and kits which have not been seen in 30 years, so the supply has dried up. new tools? 72-76ish Torino! .. heck any early to mid 70s subjects would be quite welcome. -
1/25 AMT '76 Gremlin X 2n1 coming from Round 2
kurth replied to SteveG's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Great news from AMT. sign me up for two kits. now if we all buy at least one maybe we can convince them to back date the Volare and re-issue it too! -
FULL BUILD REVIEW: 1/12 Revell Shelby Mustang GT500
kurth replied to David Thibodeau's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
My 1/12th cobra came today courtesy of tower hobbies. In a rather rare occurrence, the box was ripped open, the parts are soaking in soapy water and I have already started stripping the chrome from the wheels! Actually I welcome the somewhat simplified nature of this kit, The last 1/12th scale kit I built was a year long Odyssey and that was working on it almost every day... (tamiya porsche 935) The nice thing about building a model of a current car is you can see all the options on the manufacturer website! Now we are in model year 2012 but it is pretty much the same car right? Sure makes the research easier build your own 2012 cobra Here is what I have in mind. I saw the same car at a local ford dealer and I really was tempted to find a way to buy it. (who needs food and utilities?) -
Treasures Vault--What's in Yours?
kurth replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I can not find a pic on my computer any where, but the one kit that is a true treasure is my monogram 1/8 1978 corvette. That one was hard to track down and I do not want to do so again. It is at my Dad's house for safe keeping! I have an original 1/16th general lee, but that one is not as special with the recent re-issue. I have a few aircraft kits that were also tricky to track down. -
Strip mall is fine. Just as long as parking is not stupid, and you can get in and out of the strip mall from both directions on the street it is on. I do not know what they were thinking with the way some strip malls are located. In northern va, we have some pretty screwy strip malls. We used to have pretty darn good hobby stores in two local malls, they both ended up closing in the 90s, but they had some neat stuff. It was great back when I was younger, when the whole family would go to the mall, My dad and I could split up and go to the hobby store. Anyone remember the hobby store in Springfield Mall in VA? I am grateful for any hobby store really, it is such a tough business. Think about it ... to get anyone to come in your store you need a large amount of slow moving stock. (model kits) and all manner of supplies. The costs of carrying all that stuff must be incredible. I really do not know how people do it.

MCW or Scalefinishes?
kurth replied to 250 Testa Rossa's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have never used scalefinishes, but MCW paint is great, and they are a great company to deal with. Like others said, it all comes down to prep, and application. I followed the directions to the letter, then polished the paint, and got a darn good finish, it passes the light bulb test -
FULL BUILD REVIEW: 1/12 Revell Shelby Mustang GT500
kurth replied to David Thibodeau's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Nice. I am going to get one of these when it is released. I saw a nice sliver one at a dealer a few months ago, it had no stripes and no rear spoiler. It was the ultimate sleeper. Since I do not want to have a car payment, I will build in the 1/12th scale. I wish I took a pic of that car that day. Oh well. -
I built one of those a few years ago. I spent a lot of time, but I really bungled it on final assembly, I did a really nice paint job but I put the bumpers on crooked, and screwed up the chrome trim. I wish I had paid better attention to little details. I did not end up using the felt carpet. Fun kit though. Just be mindful during final assembly. under construction pics:

1/16 Dukes of Hazzard Charger to be Reissued?
kurth replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
My 1/16th scale General Lee arrived this week, I posted the following on the SH board the other day, a brief "peek in the box" review. My 1/16th General has just arrived courtesy of UPS. The first thing I noticed from looking at the box is the picture on the box is a little different, from a lower perspective, most likely as to not prominently display the confederate flag. The Box is more sturdy that the original version, so it should hold up to storage much better than the original. The body parts are mooded in white, not orange thankfully. The Decal sheet is complete, with the confederate flag, License plates, "O1" and "general lee" lettering. The Engine and interior parts are molded in black, the chrome looks good to my eyes, and the tail lights are molded in transparent red, and the clear parts are of course molded in clear plastic, and are nice and clear with no defects. The tires look good, and the wiring is provided in the kit for the spark plugs, and radiator hoses. From what I can see, this is a straight re-issue of the kit from the 80s. Owing to the kit's origin as a racecar, it has a race car interior, but door panels are provided. It has a nascar style dash. With a different set of wheels I suppose someone could make an accurate '69 charger NASCAR racecar. Or if you are to believe Bo & Luke raced the general on the "nascar circuit" as described on the show, maybe it would have been a race car as depicted in this kit. There are people much more knowledgeable about the General Lee and Dodge Chargers who can discuss this kit in detail I am very grateful to Round2 for re-issuing this kit. I can not thank them enough. I know large scale cars are risky for manufacturers, so I am glad they took the risk. I suggest everyone should buy one to let Round2 know just how much we appreciate this. -
I am also working on the Recently issued MPC monte carlo. I just painted the body with rustoleum lacquer. I am picking this model up after shelving it almost 2 years ago. Here is the mock-up I am imagining a "high school hot rod" as someone might have fixed it up in the late 80s or early 90s. So the paint job does not need to look perfect, I am thinking of some primer patches around the rear wheel opening, and perhaps some "stp" stickers in the rear quarter windows.

I got one 99% finished and it was how I learned the valueable lesson to test fit and check ride height. I got the whole thing done and it looked like it was sitting on jack stands. I also had trouble getting the frame to stay attached to the chassis pan. I actually documented the whole build. This was right when the kit was released. http://public.fotki.com/kurtains/models/monte/ Learn from my mistakes and tragic ending In short, The body and interior are nice, the engine is very weak, and some parts under the car are a little odd looking. The wheels and tires seemed a bit undersized to my eye. -Kurt

I found enough room in my model shoppe and garage for everything. I am now an expert in putting shelves on the walls. I realized as many of you guys said I would probably regret selling out. Every once in a while I do regret selling something years later. I am only 35 so I might be able to build everything in my lifetime....

About 100. I need to do a little more triage and see what is started, missing parts, etc.

Hello, I am not leaving the hobby but I really want to purge most of my kits. I have gone the ebay route before but it has become such an ordeal with the feedback changes and the way they get you with almost as many fees as the airlines do. Any way, Can anyone recommend a collection-buyer who has a good reputation? My stash is not terribly special but just taking up too much room. (I am getting tired of paying for storage for stuff I will never get to) Thanks for any advice

Just for fun a few years ago I built the mongram kit right out of the box using the kit decals and everything: It sure was fun!

Tower Hobbies-Price changes..
kurth replied to RyanSilva's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have been a towerhobbies customer for some time and i find my self visiting the site quite often and I can't recall seeing that sort of thing. I have seen prices go up on kits eventually but not on the same day. I ordered some very large ROG ship kits, then checked back later, maybe a month or two later and they had gone up $10 or so. Mabe you ordered early in the day then they updated their databases or something later in the day. Either way, good score! The other time I have seen price fluctuation is when an item is not in stock yet, and the price is listed kinda high, but when it shows up in stock it is a little bit less. Now if they would just get the 1/12th Jagermeister Porsche in stock I could stop stalking the 1/19th and larger page every day.... -

HOK enamels - need other reducer options for airbrushing
kurth replied to Monty's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I tried the Gold and tried MM enamel thinner as well as lacquer thinner . both of them seemed to make the paint clump a little bit and I had trouble getting even coverage. I was using a double action airbrush. I might have had better luck with a single action and a big needle. I had better results with the HOK enamel reducer but had a bad paint job due to user error that time. -
I just got home, I visited relatives after the show who live nearby. I just wasn't ready for those crazy service roads and insane merges in New Jersey. Unreal! But once I got settled in I had a grande old time meeting several people. At the show took a bunch of pictures. Here are some models from the show that caught my eye: Steve Millberry's work is simply amazing This Ford stock car was really well done How'd he do that? This is one car I would really like to see done as a kit this '40 ford was really nice... probably one of my favorites of the whole show, and I am not even a big fan of cars of this era And one of my models: you can see all my pics at: http://public.fotki.com/kurtains/models/nnl-east-2008/
