  1. I have seen it in the states at our LHS, but I haven't tried it ever. I have always just used milliput.
  2. welcome aboard. I love you New Zealand guys. I had to get some Acc Min parts from New Zealand once.
  3. Not really, when divide zero by anything it's zero so no matter what number you come up with for NASCAR you will never generate a statistically better number than F1 over the last 18 years. But I didn't simply cited fatalities. I gave other examples 1. Personal experience for what it's worth. 2. D. Earnardt And another poster came up with another example. F1 has been tethering their wheels for 18 years. I don't know even if NASCAR has to pass a crash test? F1 does and it's quite strict. Actually miles are 1/2 and another 1/2 the cars so say a 1/4 and six deaths 1.5 : 0. So NASCAR has 1 1/2 times more deaths per miles raced or so. about 13000 for NASCAR and 5800 for F1, But NHRA is fractional (cars and miles) to that of even F1 which has had 6 or 7 top level death since Ayrton Senna's death, which is when they really stepped up safety. Zero deaths to drivers, crew or spectators is a pretty strong stat for nearly a 2 decade span.
  4. I was just looking at the top level classes, because there were many lower level fatilities 52 last year alone in lower rank car related motor sports accidents, not counting motorcycles, boats, and truck events. NASCAR WCC NHRA WC CART IRL has had significantly more fatalities than F1 at there top level world champ events. I am not saying that NASCAR or NHRA don't take it seriously, they are just more reactive than proactive. We ran a TAFC where I used to work and every year the safety revisions were becasue of somebody getting injured or killed, there was never a safety revision because NHRA saw a potential problem and stopped it before someone was injured or killed. And a lot of times "that's racing" attitude prevailed and no safety revision were made even when there clearly should have been. F1 is always thinking ahead which proably saved Massa's live: requiring a newly instated reinforced Kevlar helmet. The point being Massa wasn't killed and then FIA though well we better do something about that. D Earnhardt's accident was another perfect example of passive safety measures.
  5. However, statistically, that exactly where you are likeliest to die: the bathroom. It's not that tall of an order. The problem with NHRA and Nascar is they take a more reactive approach to safety. They wait for it to happen and then try to find a fix, unlike F1 which takes a more more proactive approach. There hasn't been a F1 death since Ayrton Senna da Silva almost two decades ago.
  6. I use a mix of MM metalizers (burnt iron, and couple others I use) and black ink washes.
  7. I ended up ordering a Seig SX1 mill, and I have confirmed stats via a phone call. All things considered, I think I made a good choice. I a have found a US supplier that stocks every part for it. I found the correct 8m T slot clamp kit, an 480mm table extension, and a ton of other cool stuff for this mill, including draw bars and collets. I have also read 2 dozen different reviews and commentaries and almost all rate it very good. There are also many who have CNC converted this little mill. I know it's not a Sherline, but wasn't convienced to spend sherline money was the best way to go for a couple .0001 of inch tollerance different. Wear might be another story, but again, I found every replacement part for it, and I suspect it only will get light useage. Some high-grade bearings probably would make all the difference in the world. If I need something else in the future I will revist other machines. I will probably be getting my lathe in April. Another plus is the Mill and the Lathe tailstock share the MT2. In any event, I giddy with joy, I am starting to trully feel my workshop is getting complete.
  8. Depends on the engine. Could be any of those and some others not listed, but likely just green.
  9. It's already $500+ with over a week to go.
  10. Intersting, a $50 retraction.
  11. The wheel came off first causing the crash, and then said wheel continued on, killing the woman. So it looks like it was some kind of wheel mounting failure or was improperly attached. I agree both could be correct. She was probably killed instantly but the official declaration came at the hospital.
  12. Yes, will have to see what kind of money it goes to. There was a much lesser Sherline mill that ended earlier today for $1100.
  13. I am watching that one. it's gone up $250 in the last day $50 in the last couple hours. It will probably go for grand. Kind of a neat little video attached to the auction too.
  14. That's what I originally have been looking at, but they are still very pricey. Like I said before, the resale is strong on machines. The last serval Sherlines I was watching have gone for in the neighborhood of $1000 + I really haven't even come across too many other mini or micro machines in the last year or so of looking. I have looked for an old school Unimat too, without much luck. I think I am just going to go with this Prestige machine and go from there if needed. and a 7X12 power feed lathe, which the wife has offered to donate for my B-day coming up.
  15. Hey look. I know what a Sherline is and I know it’s great machine, but I have a hard time justifying spending twice the money or more on one. I am not mass-producing anything, I just want to make a part every once and a while. I can appreciate good CS, but that is not work twice the money either. The China machine is using all pretty standard stuff. MT2 spindle. I need a starting place and if I need a $1000, $1500 or more expensive machine later down the road then I get it, but I have no reason to get a full blown $15,000.00 Sherline CNC because it’s the best thing to get. I am not making any real car parts. I would never even consider making a real car part on a miniature machine. It is strictly for hobby, model stuff, perhaps a RC helicopter part or two. Something to play around with, I have a pile of unfinished projects because really to finish the right the need a milled or turned part. I have already been a machinist on full size Bridgeport and Kent equipment. So I understand quality differences on a machine. If we were talking a modest price difference I could justify it, but double, and then double or more on every attatchment and accessory? That is where I am having trouble seeing value in a machine that's going to be idle more often than used. It would be $2000 to get a 5100 deluxe and the 10" table and base or under $400 for similar Chinese machine. I would love to have a Sherline, but I can't justify spending $2000 on a hobby mill. Notwithstanding I need a lathe also, what's that anothing $2000. $4000 and no attachments no tooling, no measuring tools. It will be $10,000.00 real quick. See my delima?
  16. Yeah, I like to get the body out of the way first, then drivetrain, chassis, interior.
  17. That lil' turd flips over on itself on a regular basis.
  18. Why? I used to think that, but it's way more expensive by time you get the machine upgrade and get enough accessories to use it you're well over $1000. for example a rotory table for a sherline is $250 an standard 4" is $70. You end up with a much smaller work space. I could get a Sherline but I have trouble finding value in it. So please explain.
  19. Good call, this one does have a x lead screw you can just see the hand sticking up above. Micro adjustable spindle downfeed It is exactly like this Jet Machine. http://www.amazon.com/JET-JHM-610-Hobby-Mill-Drill/dp/B001U0O56E/ref=pd_sxp_grid_i_2_1
  20. Could have been anything, gasoline vapors if he was in the garage. We just don't know and are assuming it was painting with the wrong fan/motor.
  21. Well this is the machine I leaning towards. https://www.shoprutlandtool.com/catalog/prestige-value-110v-1_5-hp-motor-1-180-_2mt-spindle-travel-taper-0-390-drill_mill-cap-9-45-x/26660700.html I have seen it up close and person and it looks okay. It's had pretty good reviews if you do some basic stuff to it mainly cleaning it up. The only complaint was the the table slides are brittle and break, but they say if you just make up some new brass ones it's better than before. It's a MT2 spindle and has a bigger table travel than most of the others micro mills. The Paxxon is a collet type. The micro Shop Fox is a MT1 and only goes down to 5000 rpm. The Sherline is nice but much smaller table travle and a MT1 It is very expensive after the adds to make it a practical machine and people out grow it, so it seems. The TAIG looks really nice, like a bigger version of the Sherline, but comes with a much bigger price tag. I am entertianing other recommendations, though. I just need somewhere to start, figure things out, and upgrade to a nice machine later. I don't mind spending a $1000 after I have some experience I know exaclty what I want in a machine then I will look for whatever that machine is. But for now it looks like this might be the best bang for the buck until it wears out or can't do something I want it to do, but since I don't know what that might be yet. I don't what to lay down a ton of money on a nice machine that might not do what I want it too. Plus as long as it doesn't completely self distruct resale on any of these machines is very strong. I haven't found any smoking deals even on used equipment. BTW what size lathe did you get? I am looking at a 7X12
  22. I have seen two Jet machines now. one is exactly like the Shop Fox and the Paxton with the key pad front the other is exactly like the HF, Rutland machine. Thanks for the input, this is helping me decide.
  23. I ordered it paid for it never got it. Got the run-around for two weeks befor being finally told I will never get it, and I didn't get a sorry, ofter to try and get me into an alternate machine, nothing. I got a card TODAY, after I was told yesterday on the phone my order was canceled several days ago because the item was discontinued, that it was BO and be back in stock shortly. A week passed and it had not shipped so I was getting a little concerned. And then Sunday night I noticed it was removed on the the website and marked as backoredered. A little while later it was removed altogether. I emailed them and was tolded the item was out of stock and would be back in later, but they could not say when. I called yesterday and really had to press them for some answers and after the third person I talked to I finally got the truth that my order was canceled 4 days ago but nobody bothered to tell me even after inquiring about it's status. That's what pissed me off. I will be buying a lathe too. I looked at TAIG stuff same class mill is $800.
  24. Okay here is where I am at. All three machines are the same, same spec, I am sure made at the same place, just a different name and color. The HF was $219 non-existant They told me to pound sand basically after two weeks. The Rutland Tool I can get shipped to my door for $369 The Jet machine is $500 + shipping these are all MT2 spindles 9x5x6 work area I can't imagine going much smaller. The little Shop Fox and Paxton are also $500 they are different than the above machine. Much smaller table and spindle. MT1 The Sherline is smaller yet, MT1 but table is smaller for $600 + shipping and would need to have some adds to make it practical. Many people have seemed to out grow this machine and needed to upgrade to bigger equipment. I am thinking I might just go with the Ruland one. The only thing I don't like about it is the speed starts at 100 and not 0. It got decent reviews at miniture machine shop.
