1/16 SCALE A/FC NITRO FUNNY CAR
Ian McLaren replied to Ian McLaren's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Update to chassis, Last set of photos showed front cross tube going into and initial alignment on the jig. Now the rear members are installed and aligned on the jig and the cage has been updated with additional tubes. More changes to be made back there but have to be sure the chassis is straight and properly braced Also shown is the 9" Ford that is replacing the quick change. Fuel tank with original holes filled and low spots being addressed. The injector is show just to confirm there is no blower. But a different more detailed and correct injector is on it's way. This one belongs to a M8B BBC powered McLaren Can/Am car. But that's another build.- 167 replies

My first 1/16 scale model since I built Gene Snows Snowman for a friend when Revell first released it. This is going to be base on the recently released Hawaiian Charger Funny Car with changes to almost everything except the basic chassis. GM body, 3D printed injected BBC, 3 speed Lenco trans, 9 inch Ford rear end in place of the quick change in the kit, additional photo etch detail parts, and the inevitable scratch built bits and pieces. This is not going to be a quick build but I hope you enjoy watching the struggle. The blower in the last picture is not going to be used as this is going to be a straight up injected nitro engine. I'll try and do updates as often as I can as the various sub assemblies come together

Vintage FED, 1:25 WIP, motor is finished...
Ian McLaren replied to Mike Williams's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Simply fantastic, nuff said -
Tremendous amount of work in the build and exceptional quality, well done

Great job so far, love the workmanship!

Clear just seems to kill the chrome effect of most paints If you want a real chrome like finish you pretty much have to forego the clear. I love Alclad but it is fragile and is best left to the final stages of assembly to reduce the amount of handling. Great job so far I'll keep an eye on this build

Back in the 60 &70s most bodies were fiberglass and heavy due to the fact the bodies were pretty much made like boat hulls, glass mat or chopped glass sprayed into the mold. Cloth weave bodies were still a way off. Generally but not always they were rough textured inside and sprayed a dark flat color, grey or black mostly, at least in the lower classes A/FC and BB/FC Higher dollar teams had more money to spend on the interiors of the bodies for weight reduction and esthetics but the dark colors were still most prevalent

Please note this is just a mock up The paint is still in progress the paint hasn't been cleared or polished and the chassis still need quite a bit of work. but people have been asking for a body up shot. still needs decals and I'm in the process of building the windshield and injector dog house.

Just unmasked from three days of effort, now the touch-ups, first clear coat and then polish, working on the custom decals and final fitting of the windshield. Also got the new injector last week with a bunch of other goodies.

I'm a little late to the party and just about everything good has been said. SIMPLY AN OUTSTANDING DISPLAY OF TALENT !!!

'sIt seems I got a little ahead of myself on this one. First I should show a little perspective of what this project is all about These are the four cars I want to replicate. The Pony Express is the car I was associated and was actually the Titanium Pinto when it was a AA/FC. Unfortunately the titanium chassis was so badly stressed cracked we had to replace it with an almost identical 4130 copy that was set up for our tall deck 512 cu in BBC. I have also Included a photo of the first model in the series, my first attempt at printing my own decals and BTW that's me beside the car 37 years ago. The colors on the model are closer than the picture of the rear car shows the lighter panels were quite blue as per the model

A set of four touring BB/FC's out of Alberta that ran in the mid 70's in Alberta, Sask., B.C., Washington and Montana. 1/25 Competition Resins Vega Panel body with a late model nose grafted on, 3D printed BBC blown Alcohol engine, scratch built tin work, modified Soapy Sales chassis and Custom made decals. Mock upstage to make sure everything fits before starting the rising sun graphics. I just starting to print my own decals so the process is going very slowly. The name on the original car was Banzai

Vintage FED, 1:25, brass WIP, driveline
Ian McLaren replied to Mike Williams's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Amazing work, I'm trying to do some construction in brass but it's just not working for me. I'm not sure what is going wrong but the results generally suck. I think it may be the flux that's the problem What are you using? -
Great progress well done

First post Eddy Hill Top Fuel Car
Ian McLaren replied to Ian McLaren's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
I was trying a few things around the time I built this, but I'm pretty sure I used DuPont A7480S clear door jam Acrylic. It works great except 1 It is really only suitable for spraying with a mask 2 it drys so hard it's hard to polish You get a great shine but you really have to apply a lot of pressure. I also use future a lot and get similar results but without the downsides. I've heard of future yellowing but that has not been my experience, although my models never see sunshine or fluorescent lighting Now all LED- 14 replies
