Biggest pet peeves on builds.
LL3 Model Worx replied to LL3 Model Worx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Those do sit nicely... Only reason I've resorted to the hole saw is because it makes a perfect circle of the right size for most 1/25 scale wheels and it keeps me from having to try and sand a tiny flange evenly... the biggest reason though is because I already had the tool lol. -

Never tried that... I'll give that a shot instead of the baby oil next time. Oil definitely works though... I just don't like keeping oil near where potential painting may be required.... could become a disaster real quick. I remember when my dad put a premises ban on armor all and the likes at the body shop. If he caught you with that stuff even in the parking lot, you would be docked $100 without question lol!! -

I wasn't around back then to see it in person... but I've seen enough of it roll into the body shop, and I've owned a few like that... has a 78 el camino 2 tones black and silver with the bordello interior... loved that car. I have been using a machinists hole saw lately (by hand) to turn down the back flange of my wheels so they aren't out of scale thick and sit flush with the "rubber" Seems to work nicely for me. -

Same here... guitar was my first real passion I think. I've been at it now 22yrs. I have a problem with not wanting to sell stuff... (the collector in me) so just keep accumulating stuff. I did sell on an SG standard recently because I hated everything about it except its looks. Biggest highlight of my guitar playing was being given the opportunity to play some of the rarest, most important, and valuable guitars and amps in the world at the Songbirds museum in Chatanooga. I played a few things there that really made me question my life if I were to drop it. -

I agree with you on the paint Steve, as I did many posts back... with our exceptions being wild customs/gassers etc... if I recall. I think the way that you asserted your point through wording (context is difficult without sound) is what caused "the bridge too far" scenario. It maybe came off the wrong way... as if you were saying "my way is the only way that's right" etc... but I don't think that's what you really intended to say. Maybe saying, "huge flakes on a model clearly depicting an otherwise stock vehicle, are a complete eyesore"... with that statement I 100% agree. No factory color, and even 99.9% of custom paint jobs on real cars get that bass boat flake... for one it is usually and eyesore and it is a pita to achieve a "nice" result. I think I said before that in our body shop we only ever did a few those that I can remember, and they were purpose built vehicles. One was a motorcycle I believe, and another a van...idr the other. I think it was just a misunderstanding... But, my Riviera is still gonna be a far cry from realistic, and its gonna be sweet...(I hope) lol!! -

That's awsome! Like that explorer... I have 3. Also have a warlock as well I'm just as big a guitar nut as I am a model nut... I started playing at 7. I think I have over 40 guitars (and just as many amps) in my hobby room, and my wife hates it (that's how I know they are all keepers) Cool to have someone else here into guitars also. -
I have a harder time keeping my paint organized tbh. For kits (of all subjects) once a build is complete or if I know I'm not using certain parts I will take them and put them in there own small "organizer box" I bought a ton of those small boxes with compartments from the dollar store, they were a buck each and they are stackable. So, I put a label on the front saying what kit it's from. As far as wheels/tires go, I just put them together in some of the bigger "organizer boxes" from Home depot. If my stash keeps growing, I'm gonna have to expand into the cellar... wich means I've gotta add an inside door leading to my current hobby room. Not looking forward to it.

I saw an aerosol can of plastip at Ollie's the other day that had a guy holding a model car and applying this stuff... right on the can. Just wait til that trend takes hold... -

Steve, I will apologize for the beating you are taking here... it's not exactly gentlemanly, even though it may have been self inflicted. I understand what you are trying to say, as I for one do like the idea of "realism" even though my work far misses the mark most of the time despite it being the aim. But to say that's the entire point of a SCALE model... that is not at all accurate, despite what Webster tells you... they added the words "Twerk and Derp" in there so... But how do you account for scale models of scifi subjects... or a 1/25 Godzilla... none of that is remotely realistic, no matter how good the modeler...suspension of disbelief is required and that is OK. I've been scratch building everything but the body of a 65 Riviera to be a complete post apocalyptic mad max/death race esque vehicle that has absolutely no basis in reality, because to me it's a COOL idea. Of not for unrealistic models we would not have great things like the original Star Wars or the likes. Every builder out there has an artistic license, some just choose not to employ it... and that too is ok. Models would get super boring if ALL I was doing was trying to copy my 1:1's... I sometimes like the "hypotheticals" keeps it fun and interesting. Again, sorry... you are a far more experienced and skilled modeler than me, but that doesn't make you right in this particular case. Now let's get back to all being friends and joking about silly things like, my 68 Camaro build... that's full of the things this thread is about. Peace. -
Looking for Diesel engine for a GTX???
LL3 Model Worx replied to 2zwudz's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Probably gonna have to look someplace like shapeways.... I know of a few different 1/25 Cummins variants on there. Here is one but its pricey https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwja95KPjbPmAhUBlLMKHUvOAGgYABABGgJxbg&ae=1&ohost=www.google.com&cid=CAESQeD2WFu6zZlWWxRux_ILiYcU6cYK0SBfuflrArmGJc-WrmPu3metuIKwuN-9zY6D4uwYcSA1hFowmGdyt1v-xC66&sig=AOD64_3vKM9FBcsT_xbhvLWmWGXSDMibow&ctype=5&q=&ved=2ahUKEwiyroiPjbPmAhVSiOAKHe_fC9kQ8w56BAgLEAg&adurl=https://www.ebay.com/i/223725152959%3Fchn%3Dps%26norover%3D1%26mkevt%3D1%26mkrid%3D711-117182-37290-0%26mkcid%3D2%26itemid%3D223725152959%26targetid%3D596465714548%26device%3Dm%26mktype%3Dpla%26googleloc%3D9013387%26poi%3D%26campaignid%3D6470474827%26mkgroupid%3D83197473768%26rlsatarget%3Dpla-596465714548%26abcId%3D1140476%26merchantid%3D6296724%26gclid%3DCjwKCAiAis3vBRBdEiwAHXB29CFRJkati0bHQ7SPtJXPyCovkw0LthLKXNxpSISspOnm20dlzck5qhoCK3oQAvD_BwE -
glue on windshield

If it's just fog from superglue... baby oil will take the fog away. -
Thanks. Its absolutely not the greatest kit... but it went together fairly easy I suppose. I mainly used this build as a test bed for new ideas/techniques as it's not really a "must have" car for me. This was my first BMF job, solder headers, fuel lines, throttle linkage, etc... It was also the first time since I was a kid that I used testors enamel straight from a (very old, low pressure) rattle can... I wound up with so much orange peel I had to wet sand/buff for what felt like years to get a decent finish, after waiting 2 months for the paint to cure... those little cans contain good paint, but that delivery method is criminal. I ruined so many models as a kid with them, I resorted to using full size hvlp and urethane... until I left the hobby. Since this build I decant everything for AB use.... SO much nicer.

Idk if it counts.... But this 69 GTX shows what appears to be a decent set of wide tires... except NO you get some "pizza cutter thin" red lines.... very disappointing. I can say that some of the decals are cool... and it gives you both 426 and 440 complete engines. But the tires are the real drawback for me.... if a man wanted to do it box stock the stance is gonna look terrible.

existential modeling
LL3 Model Worx replied to STYRENE-SURFER's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I grew up in a body shop, and the drag racing scene. I started doing bodywork really young, and painted my first 1:1 before I was a teenager. However I was always into engines... how they worked, and what makes them different from each other. So I started building engines at around 15... Now I just build models cause it's less expensive in every single way... -

Those look fantastic honestly. -
Pulled this one off the shelf to show... This is the first car kit I built after my return to car modeling. there is PLENTY of bad going on with this one... I'm just gonna say "those wheels" lol! There were alot of "firsts" (and lasts) on this build... Makeshift engine "detailing" stuff... throttle linkage, fuel rail/hose etc... blower pulley and belt First time trying solder wire headers... neat, but I'm not sure I like them ... Nice mold seam on trans... never again. I learned ALOT of what NOT to do on this build... Feel free to comment and critique lol!

I find the digital The digital caliper has saved my sanity in both the hobby and my profession more times than I can count! It is most assuredly a must have tool for ANY fabricator/mechanic etc...

Other than models I also paint guitars.... started doing this right after I got my first one at 7yrs old. The funky one with the pink stripes was for a customer... wanted something cheesy, so that's what i gave them... (pictures taken before clear coat) So, what other stuff do y'all paint?
