  1. Actually, it's something that has irked me for some time. While I can understand a business wanting to keep costs under control, why do so many retailers here in NYC (and likely elsewhere) have only one living and breathing cashier? If I want to check out some time this month, I have to use a self-checkout terminal. I really don't mind checking myself out, but why do users not receive a small discount for doing the work that the store used to pay someone to do? With inflation at multi-decade highs, a small discount would be more than welcome, especially by someone like myself who is retired and on a fixed income.
  2. I must be an amateur compared to many of you guys. I have exactly 3 kits in my stash.
  3. Mine was a light blue 4 dr with a 283ci. Bought it in 1969 with over 100k on the odometer for $100. Sold it a couple years later with about 130k for.....$100. Who says cars don't hold their value. 😀
  4. Super build of one of my all-time favorite cars. I have the Tamiya version but, after seeing your Italeri, I just ordered one to add to my collection.
  5. Two really nice builds. I'm also a bit prejudiced as my first 1:1 car was a '62 Impala.
  6. No doubt about the frustration factor. My wife might just be the most patient person I've ever met and she lost that patience with her mom from time to time. It's nobody's fault and we just have to accept things for what they are and that's often not the easiest thing to do.
  7. I can't imagine anyone coming away from a visit to a loved one not being affected negatively by what they saw. I can certainly understand your reasoning as we would all like to remember our loved ones at their best. One of the saddest things is that most dementia patients don't recognize people that they have know all their lives. When my mother-in-law was admitted to the home where her husband was already living she had not idea that he was her husband even though they had been married for something like 60 years. There were rare days that she recognized my wife but they became fewer and fewer as time went by. Oddly, she seemed to know who I was although she didn't remember my name. She hung on for about 6 years and, as sad as it is to say, her passing was a blessing for all involved.
  8. Unfortunately, I have had some first-hand experience. My late mother-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in her early 80's and it was heartbreaking to watch her deteriorate. My wife and I took her into our home after her husband was put into a nursing home due to some physical issues. As many of you will know, Alzheimer's patients are known to "sundown" from the early evening on and she was a classic example. We went without much sleep for months. My wife had to give up her job to stay home with her mom while I had to leave home at 4:00 am to get to work in another state. Not much fun when one averages maybe 2 hours sleep. It finally all came to a head when she put a pot on the stove with nothing in it and turned on the gas. Luckily, we were able to prevent any more damage than a scorched pot. The last straw was when, in the middle of the night she somehow got our door open and was leaving. After months of sleep depravation, we simply fell asleep but one of our dogs started barking and woke us up in time. That's when we had no choice but to have her put into the same nursing home as her husband so that she could get the 24/7 attention required. Visiting her in the dementia unit was a real eye opener. My wife visited every day for nearly 6 years and I went as often as I could. What shocked me the most was the number of patients who received either no visitors or only an occasional visit. If might just be the worst disease that I have ever seen as it affects the family at least as much as the person stricken. I won't even go into the financial issues involved which, after the money runs out, the family has to deal with Medicaid which is another nightmare. My heart indeed goes out to anyone having to deal with a situation like this. I sure wish that I had some magic solution but it's mostly a matter of staying strong and relying on whatever support network you have.
  9. Very sad. I'll never forget the "Immaculate Reception". It was one of those plays that made you doubt your own eyes. Those were some amazing Steeler teams even though I'm a lifelong Giant's fan.
  10. Tried mailing the monthly electric bill at my usual USPS mailbox earlier today. Oddly, (or maybe not so oddly these days) the envelope would not drop into the box. Stuck my fingers in and found all sorts of sticky stuff which, I guess, was placed there by some piece of garbage who would rather steal than work for a living. I was able to retrieve most of my envelope, check and payment stub (each in three pieces by the time I finished. All that this lowlife ended up with was essentially the upper right corner of the envelope with the postage stamp, the check number and a little piece of the payment stub. I was probably lucky that a postal inspector didn't happen to pass by and lock my butt up for tampering with the mail. Shredded the remains and paid online which is what I'll be doing going forward. Welcome to 21st century America.
  11. Wanna get sick? Iceberg lettuce is now going for $7 a head here in NYC. Spoke to a woman on the subway yesterday (we both survived the trip) who told me that she paid $10 for a head of Romaine. Calling those who are running things morons is much too kind.
  12. Been doing the rotation thing for quite some time. I also use an old pill container for disposal but I like your idea of cutting a slot in the cap instead of removing it entirely.
  13. I've bought the 100 packs of Chinese cheapo blades off Amazon and use them for general cutting. Not too bad. However, working with BMF or any other task requiring the best sharpness, I only use new Excel #11's as there really is a big difference. Haven't bought X-Acto brand since trying the Chinese version which are grossly overpriced. If I want cheap Chinese blades, I'll just buy cheap Chinese blades.
  14. I have been using a Xuron Micro Shear sprue cutter and it works quite well. However, I wanted a cutter for finer work and just received the Tamiya "Sharp Pointed Side Cutter" (#123) which really works well when removing small, delicate parts. For whatever reason Amazon is selling it for quite a bit less than my regular online retailer which usually has great prices.
  15. Pretty much the same result. Found many warped parts that I simply couldn't get to fit correctly no matter what I did. Like you, I did put some pieces into my spares box.
  16. Thanks for the info which is pretty much what I expected after extensive searching for a '72.
  17. I might be the only one, but what about a '72 Chevelle, For some reason no manufacturer seems to currently offer it. Of all the cars that I've owned, it's the only one that I can't build a model of. I've thought of modifying a '71 which is pretty close but my skills (or lack thereof) make that a non-starter.
  18. Couldn't agree more. I'm guessing that you live on Long Island but here in Manhattan cars blasting music are an all-night event. I'm retired so get to sleep as late as i want to, but I really feel for those who have to get up for work as early as I used to do. Scott8950 also makes a good point as to the "lyrics" of what passes for music. I don't want to be like many of my parent's generation by denying the musical tastes of younger folks and I've never been accused of being a prude, but the language used is even beyond what I heard in the barracks.
  19. Nicely done and it looks great in yellow. I have a Tamiya Europa in my stash that I was going to paint green but.....
  20. Can't say for sure, but my dad and I built a bunch of warship and plane models back in the 1950's. Yeah, I'm old. 😀 My first model car was an early 60's T-bird somewhere around 1963. How did it turn out? Don't ask!
  21. Looks like I'm not the only one favoring Scale Hobbyist. Great selection, fair prices and superb customer service.
  22. Tom...great job on the build and that's an incredible paint job. I recently ordered this kit and hope that my build compares somewhat to yours. Please don't take this as negative criticism but, if you have access to Photoshop or some other photo editing software, you can get rid of the spots on the background with a simple mouse click using the "spot healing brush" tool or something similar depending upon the software. I've taken the liberty of doing a quick "fix" and hope that you don't mind my doing so.
  23. I can only imagine what this beauty would look like in a diorama with an equally fine Stone, Woods and Cook version.
  24. Gee, maybe by laying off 50,000 postal workers we can now afford to hire those 87,000 IRS workers to pick whatever we have left in our pockets. Read into that what you will. 🔫
