Apple Jack Car show
mageckman replied to RodBurNeR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Dave, I wasn't trying to argue or start an argument. I actually agree with you to a point. I'm not a big fan of "rat rods". A good traditional rod, yes, rat rods , no. I was just throwin my two cents in there about those god awful low profile tires and huge rims, that everyone seems to be putting on their rods nowadays. I apologize if it came across like I was trying to start something. Mageckman -
Apple Jack Car show
mageckman replied to RodBurNeR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The "rat rod" trend may be an infection, but, at least it doesn't have those stupid low profile tires or gigantic rims. Those drive me nuts!! awbcrazy, it looked like it was a pretty good car show. Looks like there were some pretty cool cars there. I went to the Rebel Run this weekend and it was fantastic as well. If I could figure out how to work my comp and download pics to this site, I'd post some of the ones that were there, along with the old school circle track racers. -
Aww, come on Jeff, tell us more. LOL sorry had to be said.

I believe those are supposed to be gauges. Some of the chevy trucks of this style had the fuel, oil, temp, and amp gauges stretched out under the speedo, tach, and clock. My 1:1 has just the speedo and fuel gauge in the cluster and the rest are idiot lights, but I do have a cluster like his that I am planning on swapping in. Hope this helped

Very nice traditional rod. There is a 1:1 similar to it runnin around the town I live in. I definately would not call that a rat rod. Doesn't look like ya need a tetanus shot just to look at it

Replacement for AMT '72 Chevy truck chassis?
mageckman replied to Aaronw's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Actually a leaf spring suspension would also be correct. My 1:1 72 chevy truck has the trailing arms and one of the guys I work with, his 1:1 72 chevy truck has leaf springs. Both are stock, with no major rework done on the suspensions. I am planning on building a scale version of my truck using the kit supplied chassis after I get rid of the rest of the promo style chassis. I think the frame from the 84 gmc pickup would work if you stretch the frame. I have thought about goin that route. hope this helps. -
Berk, while I have used clear coat out of a rattle can(accidently), I picked up a 1/2 oz bottle of clear enamel at hobby lobby. The one I have is labeled with Colors by Boyd but I think testors also makes small bottles of clear. I just use a small brush with the small bottles to apply it. Hope this helps.

Berk, I use household aluminum foil like reynolds wrap for my chrome work. I don't order online and my LHS doesn't stock BMF and won't. I use a clear enamel as the glue. carefully paint it on and let it get tacky, about five to ten minutes or so(longer depending on the humidity in the air). I carefully lay the foil over the part I want chromed and burnish it down. I use a Q-tip to burnish it down followed by dragging a toothpick carefully over it. Don't push the toothpick as it will grab and rip your foil. I let it dry for approximately 30 minutes to an hour. Then, using a fresh blade I carefully cut around the spots I want chromed. I carefully pull the excess away from the body after it is cut, using a toothpick to push down on the foil I want to keep in place. To me it is far cheaper to go this route, and with a little practice it looks quite nice. I hope this helps.

I'm getting ready to try some of the clear plastic that Wal-Mart uses for their baked goods. It looks to be about the right thickness. Hopefully I can get it to work. Has anyone else tried this stuff, yet? Mageck

Submit Your Helpful Hints, Tips, and Tricks to MCM
mageckman replied to Gregg's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Gregg, feel free to use these tips in the magazine. I build on a very limited budget, and can't afford to buy aftermarket parts for detailing. So any detailing I do is scratchbuilt with what I have, can find, or salvage from whatever source. When I do small springs, throttle return springs for instance, I use some very small gauge wire and a very small needle.I thread the wire into the hole in the needle and start to turn the needle to wind the wire. I wind it until I deem it is long enough for what I need it for. Then carefully push the end out of the eye of the needle and GENTLY pull your spring off the needle. If you are making up quite few at one time you can even chuck the needle in your pin vice for speed and ease. When I make the L shaped throttle, I make mine out of very thin sheet plastic or a big enough piece of flash( of which there is plenty on many on the reissues that some of the manufacturers are making nowadays). I figure out where I am going to make my throttle and drill three holes an equal distance apart similar to this :. , BEFORE I cut out the L shape. Once it is cut out I then paint it in an appropriate metallic color. Hope this helps, Mageckman -
Florian, when I make throttle return springs, or any small springs for that matter, I use some real thin armature wire I got out of an old electric mixer( I think). I use a real small needle, slip the wire into the hole in the needle, wind the wire twice around the needle and you won't have to hold the end. Then wind the spring as long as you need it. As for the the L shaped throttle, I use either flash from an old kit or some real thin plastic sheet. Drill your holes BEFORE you cut out the L shape( I learned the hard way.LOL) Paint it silver or another metallic color. Clean out the holes after you are done painting. I would post pics but , I don't have an online photo account and I haven't figured out how to post pics yet. Hope this helps Mageck

got a tip for fuel/brake lines, mesh, wiring, and more.
mageckman replied to abedooley's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
We were an injection mold plant so there was all kinds of stuff that applied to modeling. They even used the same plastic in some molds. Abe, did you work at the Plano plant? I had a friend who left Ohio to go over and work there. I helped him and his family move to Columbus IN. I'm gonna have to try the coax cable some time. I have some layin around here somewhere. I just read about this on MSN, and it has me worried. Along with this Ford also sold Jaguar to the Indian company Tata. The company that I work for supplies suspension parts for some of the GM SUV's and some of the Jaguar cars. It has me wondering if we are gonna go through another round of layoffs. We've been through three so far this year.Time will tell. Andy, now why would anyone come after you for speakin the truth? LOL I truly believe 90% of the trucks and SUV's are not used for what they were designed for. Personally, I believe a truck is a truck and should be used for hauling stuff around(ie, throw a load of concrete blocks or wood in the back, hauling furniture or farm material) , Not babying it and getting upset when you scratch the paint in the bed.Up until something happened to the motor in mine I used it to haul all kinds of stuff, from motors and car parts to furniture to mulch, a load of concrete, home improvement supplies, etc, etc. That's why I bought a longbed truck. To HAUL STUFF.If you drop it as low as it will go, and its not from the weight you have in the bed, you have just wasted a good truck. Just my opinion. Mageck

As VWDave posted earlier"I was going to say you really need to do your homework before posting, but why change your M.O. now?" The swastika, aka: fylfot, mundilfari, sunwheel, or hammer, is an ANCIENT religious symbol known and used in just about all religions at one time or another. Just because one group used a symbol to promote hate, death, and conformity does not mean we need to ban or burn it. If we were to take that stance on all symbols that were used by groups doing the same thing, there would be very few symbols left that anyone would be allowed to use anywhere. Take the Christian Cross for example( the only reason I am using this as an example is it is a very prominent symbol). The cross has been around as long if not longer than the swastika. It was probably a symbol of the sun or the directions. It was also used as a symbol of punishment and death. The Romans, among others, used a cross as a punishment for crimes commited. As the Romans, and much of Europe , became Christianized, it became a symbol of Christianity. It became a rallying symbol to Christians across the planet as they strove to "convert"(read torture, kill, maim, and destroy anything and anyone who was different than they were and believed differently than they did). Look at what the European Christians did during the "Crusades". Is this really all that different than what the Nazis did under Hitler? The only difference I see is that the Christians won. Oh, and by the way, you can flame me all you want. I DON'T CARE!!!! Life is too short to hate someone else for their beliefs. Mageckman

Hanging Up The #11s For A Long While
mageckman replied to Lownslow's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I haven't seen this much useless slop slung since the HHMB days. go to the SA site. This a normal daily thing. Or at least it was the last time I was there. That is why I left. -
Never salute an officer with only one finger. Or two!! I have done this. but, luckily for me, I'm in fire and not the military, and I'm in good with the officer. One that my brother(a disabled marine) told me about was : don't knock the hat of the DI, even if he dares you to.

I Might Be In For A Rude Awakening
mageckman replied to ballpoteau's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
ballpoteau, let me give ya some advice, get your back checked out by a doctor. When I was in high school I did the whole weightlifting thing. Heavy squats ,deadlifts, bench, etc, the works. I wish I knew what my highest squat weight was. We didn't have enough weight to go around for everyone when they were lifting heavy. In my Junior year,I did 2 squats with 450 on the bar and 2 guys draped over the bar. A very heavy lift.On the third I felt something pop and we all hit the floor. I'm payin for it now. My back goes out about every 3-4 months or so. I'm only 32. Don't make the same mistake I did. Mageckman -
This Is For All You Haters! May I Present "donkey?"
mageckman replied to TimKustom's topic in Model Cars
I have seen this done in 1:1 I laughed so hard when I saw it, It was almost as funny as the vette I saw done up the same way. Tim, that looks great, not my style, but great none the less. Mageck -
Gray, I really must say this, That looks great!! The closest I've come to doin anything like that was a full on Blue Max funny car build I tried doin awhile back. But that one is stalled as I can't get the paint right on it. What do you use to thin the fingernail polish? I've got several projects that I have found the perfect colors for, but I'm not sure what to thin the fingernail polish with. Mageck

I seem to remember reading an article in one of the model mags (sorry,I don't remember which one), about someone who made a set of small dies for making louvers. The ones I saw were attached to a pair of vice grips(I think, It's been awhile). It looked like it would be time consuming but what I saw looked very good. Anyone else remember this? I think they had them in several sizes. Mageck
