Caboverdose
Jürgen M. replied to Rockford's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thanks Steve! That's right, I haven't found any useful information concerning my build either. Therefore I designed the tilting mechanism so it fits in and works. Your solution really looks robust and functional. I've always had a space problem. Since cabovers have shift towers on one side and the exhaust plumbing on the other I've been having a hard time getting both under the cab! -

Steve, that's amazing! Those dampers are so cool! Mind if I use that on one of my next builds? It's just a great idea and perfectly done! 👍 -

A bit more progress: Lubricator installed ... Cab mounted .... Unfortunately the cab seems to be a bit too small. At least the hight isn't sufficient. I'm actually thinking of making a new one! On the other hand it could also be that the wheels are a bit too big. Maybe I'll try smaller rims and the round 1 AMT tires! -

Little cab mock-up: Roof still has to be worked on and the doors need to be assembled. Have to make the windows before I assemble everything. -

You may have noticed that I used two types of tires. The original truck also has different tires on the rear axles and since I had some of the AMT tires left I thought it might me a bit more original to use them. The other tires are Italeri. -

Did some corrections on the fifth wheel. I had the feeling it was a bit too big and the slider had holes in the side which the real truck doesn't have. Little mistakes that happen, but they're correctable! I also added the bolts on the sides of the slider. -

The horn button now has its Marmon badge and mahogany inlay. I know, it's barely visible but it's the first impression that counts! The Cat lettering on the engine I saw on a picture while doing research. Eventhough you can't see if this specific engine has the lettering I thought it looks pretty cool! The color is a bit off but the engine will be weathered a bit. Then it won't look so different anymore! -

Fifth wheel mock-up: I also reduced the depth of the rear hubs! They were sticking out a bit too far compared to the real thing! -

This is the new fifth wheel: It will be painted in body color just like the cab. Now I have to mix the body color and paint the cab, tanks, fifth wheel, battery boxes, ... Next to that, the windows have to be cut to size. As soon as the cab ist mounted I can put the cab rest in place and design the air intake, air cleaner, exhaust. -

Congratulations! Beautiful build! -
Try the Italeri truck tires! I use them very often since my source for Revell soft rubber tires hast closed down. They also have wider tires for European trailers. They look pretty good! I used the truck tires on my Mack Cruiserliner recovery. The fatter trailer tires I put on the front axle of my GMC General:

Had to redo the radiator! It was a bit too wide to fit underneath the dog house! That was what I had forgotton to do! 🙈 I knew it! The mesh is cut out from a printing raft, the Base printed underneath parts to ensure adhesion. The hubs will be weathered a bit with rust. Hope it works! And a few more parts: New seats, battery boxes with steps, instrument panel, steering wheel and slider for fifth wheel! I also designed a new fifth wheel because my "standard" one didn't look enough like the one on this truck! Pics follow when it's printed! It will tilt and slide. I sanded the seats a bit with 500 grain to make them look a bit used! I'm not sure yet if I should put sheep covers on too like shown in the pics. I'll think about it. -

Thanks very much! Yes, it is gratifying but not always. At least when you find your limits in designing. But I am an old dog who does learn a few new tricks so it stays fun! In fact, the white filament I have at the time does print a bit smoother. Unfortunately I can't Always get the same quality in each color. The good thing is, you can't see the uneven structures in the black as well (unless you have eyes as good as yours)! 😉 -

Bumper and front hubs added! Next I have to begin painting and assembling the interior. Then I have to mix the color of the cab which also goes on tanks and other parts! Won't be easy but I'll try to get as close as possible. The color for my Pig Pen Mack was mixed of five different colors in different percentages and it worked out pretty well! -

Thanks Jeff! I hope this will turn out worthy! If this is actually the last of its kind, I want it to be good! But as always I will not go into detail too deep but probably more than usual! Research brought up that in 1962/63 there were only 25 of these built and this one survived till today! -
