Tamiya 1/24 Mazda MX-5 Miata NA BRG Edition
OldNYJim replied to Italianhorses's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Outstanding - and inspiring! I really like the look of that interior! -
I wonder if a roadster pickup might be a variation, further down the road? Once they’ve done the coupe again, what other Model A variants are there that they could do?
-
Funnily enough I posted a poll on my Instagram and got an exact 50/50 split...I ended up going with a black wash on the chrome grill and calling it a win for both sides ? Let the body sit for another week or so before masking up ready to paint the fabric roof insert on the body: Looks good I think! Next one I do I’ll sand that smooth so I get a nice big panel of that pearl orange, but I like the look on this one anyway: Spent some time polishing the other little bits and pieces too - the grill shell, firewall and inner arches and so on...here’s the deck lid in progress: Love that color! Then, with all that done got the glass installed: It’s starting to look like a thing! ? Getting close to final assembly time, but I’m cautious to do any more today whilst the glue for the glass is still setting up...so more on this one soon!

Tamiya 1/24 Mazda MX-5 Miata NA BRG Edition
OldNYJim replied to Italianhorses's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Beautiful! That paint job is stunning - probably better than Mazda ever did them! Looks great! The chassis looks good too - looks like you dry-brushed the suspension parts? -
Really nice work on that gas cap!
-
That paint is great!
-
I actually saw much the same story on a news channel recently - cool to see scale modelling on TV! And great news for Revell, and presumably the other manufacturers too!
-
I finally managed to get my scrapbook cutter to successfully cut tiny letters so I can have more 3D looking license plates Haven’t PERFECTED it yet, but cutting such small stuff on vinyl has taken a few attempts to say the least. PS: it says “Ah! Olé!” and definitely isn’t anything to do with the fact that this is going on an everybody-has-one-lately Revell Model A kit ???
-
A little more today...I’d let the Alclad set up for a couple of days and then got the block assembled - I used most of the kit chrome where I could and actually added a little Alclad chrome to a couple of bits then gave it all a light black wash to bring out some detail: This little piece was broken on my kit right out of the box - has anyone else had that, out of interest? You can’t really see it on the completed engine anyway, so no biggie... With that done, added plug wires: I’ll add the carbs and blower intake further down the line I think to avoid knocking-them-off-itus whilst I’m still assembling stuff In other news, man those gauge decals are tiny! Impressive how small they can print this stuff! Might’ve been a cool idea to mould that chrome panel with holes and have one diamond shaped decal that could sit behind it somehow. But they look good I think...I straighten that one wonky one and gave them a little dab of epoxy each for make some glass. And finally, seeing as it’s a Model A and everyone seems to have one of these lately I made some license plates...they’re meant to say “Ah! Olé!” in case the DMV ask: Ive been trying to master making those raised letters for a while - getting closer! More soon!

Cloudy, Dull Paint Finish Problem
OldNYJim replied to PeterB's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
My bet would be humidity is the problem - probably not an easy one to solve in Florida...when the humidity is higher here in NY I suffer similar problems, sometimes. I try and only paint when the humidity is below 50% (the lower the better), but again, that might not be very easy for you where you live...assuming there's enough coverage of paint on the surface have you tried polishing the surface out to a shine? -
Tamiya 1/24 Mazda MX-5 Miata NA BRG Edition
OldNYJim replied to Italianhorses's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Beautiful work so far! I really wish Tamiya had included a pop-up headlamp option for this kit - the pop ups are one of the best things about this car! Looks great anyway - very impressive work as always! -
A little more progress on this one - I’m using the kit blower setup on this build, but the chrome on my blower was pretty rough so I stripped it back down to bare plastic so I could Alclad it. My local hardware store was out of the enamel black paint that I like, but I picked up a can of a dark brown and tried it out with the Alclad - worked great! Cleaned up parts in brown; And after chrome: I’ll nub out a couple of the little dust marks and give the parts that need it one more light coat, but I was pretty pleased with how they came out! Meanwhile, a little embossing powder action for the floor: A couple of little bald spots to fix and then I can start on the interior too. All the painting and prep steps are kinda boring to follow along with, but I’m running out of stuff to paint here so more interesting stuff soon!

Tamiya 1/24 Mazda MX-5 Miata NA BRG Edition
OldNYJim replied to Italianhorses's topic in WIP: Model Cars
LOVE Miatas! First one I ever drove was BRG with a tan interior - and I wanted one from the minute I drove it! And one of my favorite builders building one? I’m in! ??? -
Ask and ye shall receive - according to my fancy new humidity measurer it was super low humidity today so I shot some clear - only got a quick snap but the clear laid down nice and smooth and should settle down nicely in my improvised drying booth (a box): Working on the engine too - the chrome is about perfect on my kit except on the blower scoop which had a bunch of roughness and patchyness, so that’s sitting in the Purple Pond until it learns it’s lesson. Shot a little Alclad aluminum on the block whilst I was looking at engine stuff - I haven’t used Alclad for a while but I always like how it lays down and it’s nice to mix up some metal shades to add some variety and visual interest: More soon!

My wife surprised me with a little gift today - a hygrometer! Being so close to ocean where we are, the humidity always seems high and I use weather forecasts to get an idea of when a good time to paint is - now I don’t have to guess! Not super interesting, but a really useful tool for me! Low humidity = smooth paint! Soon as I opened it and let it acclimatise a little I noticed it was a super low humidity day so I shot some clear - came out pretty nice!

Createx Transparent for Candy Effects?
OldNYJim replied to Mopar440_93's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Not that I’ve tried! Unless you mean to literally clear coat over it, in which case Testor’s high gloss enamel ?. -
Createx Transparent for Candy Effects?
OldNYJim replied to Mopar440_93's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thank you! A little of both...the Candy2o is my favorite, but there’s some of both on there. I’ve heard that some of the Createx lines are meant for fabrics too, but it seems that the paint doesn’t know what I’m spraying it on as I’ve never had any troubles using any of them for anything I’ve wanted to do with them. Their weakest product, for me, is the black which doesn’t like to dry without some heat in my experience, but the others are good quality products that are easy to work with in my opinion (for what that’s worth ?) Their purple over a chrome would look great I’d think! -
Good sources for coil springs
OldNYJim replied to OldNYJim's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I forgot that I posted this...but I did spend most of yesterday trying to make a low-tech pair of coil-overs for my Deuce that I’m working on. I guess some of that advice above actually sank in! The ‘wrapping around a screw’ method worked best for me...I tried a few different materials and settled on a thin-gauge solder. It needed to be handed carefully but was easier to work with than any of the craft wires I had here for sure -
It’s red and black now ? Should look cool with my semi-matching Deuce build: Waiting for a low-humidity day here so I can shoot some clear over it...got lucky with a couple of nice days over the weekend but it’s been 75-85% humidity here ever since and that’s not conducive to a nice smooth paint job...no rush though, I’m not exactly short of things to work on ?

The issues with scratch building
OldNYJim replied to IbuildScaleModels's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
That frame looks GREAT! I love it! The budget answer to your problem is the one STYRENE-SURFER suggested, I think - tape ‘em together and separate when done. The less labor-intensive version is to use a scrapbook cutter - I think of mine as a baby waterjet machine or something. Of course, it also requires a computer and a scrapbook cutter, which is a lot more expensive than tape ? -
Createx Transparent for Candy Effects?
OldNYJim replied to Mopar440_93's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Translucent paint over a reflective base color is basically what a candy paint job is; Tamiya’s clear colors work great and I really like them but there’s only a handful of colors. You can mix them, obviously, but the Createx line is a lot more varied. Harder to spray in my experience, they’re very thin and need to be mixed with a carrier for best results but a lot of colors to choose from and a good quality product. Used a mix of Tamiya clears and Createx solids and candies on this one: -
Still waiting until I dare polish the body some more...but got some work done on the frame this past couple of days. Made some simple coilovers to replace the kit‘s plastic parts: These aren’t as nice as a set made on a lathe...but I don’t have a lathe ?♂️?. They look cool on there though, definitely an improvement over the kit pieces I think: Plumbed the front and rear brakes: And had to shorten the driveshaft a few scale inches to account for the longer trans on the new engine...this one wasn’t going to work: And everything else was a case of sticking everything together until I ended up with this: And we got a roller! It’s gonna look cool I think! Racecar-y! I can’t decide if I want a chrome insert for the grille or if I should shoot it black...any opinions anyone? More soon, soon as I’ve done more!

1932 Ford Chopped 4-Door Sedan Conversion
OldNYJim replied to Dennis Lacy's topic in WIP: Model Cars
This looks outstanding Dennis - it has that “can’t put my finger on it” factor that makes it look REAL even though I know it isn’t. Probably a combination of things, but it’s a really good looking build! Always appreciate you sharing your work!
