Clear Coat
mistermodel replied to COEChub's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I ve clear coated chrome a lot of times,it keeps cleaner when assembling.dont touch it hold it by the sprue and put it away for a couple weeks for the clear to get good and hard. Also I understand the oils from your skin is what makes old chrome discolour -
Missing part question ?
mistermodel replied to rssschris's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I had a titan with the frame rails missing.I emailed amt and they said mail it to them so they can inspect the kit ,or take it back to the retailer.I chose the later. In my case you could see the missing part in the un opened bag.If your hobbie shop is good they should give you an exchange -
Thats just the way they are.I have an old trucking magizine talking about a single trailer kit that has a dolly included, this single was avalible the same time the doubles were original issues. The US mail set comes with one alsoSpare parts are always a bonus.Get another one to make a tandem for some turnpike doubles

those tires are awfull.Ive read that you can super glue them to the rim.One guy said to cut the center piece out, claiming that this is what distorts them,I,d think you would need to glue them for sure then.Another guy showed using old amt tires with the centers left on to lock them to the rims,Jerry sells them at his decal store. Some stuff them with cotton balls to firm them up.I only had one of thes kits and parted it out before I got that far,so I can only tell you what Ive read.Give the cotton ball and super glue a try

Cummins Beige paint?
mistermodel replied to Mr mopar's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I've used krylon khaki for the last 2 I did.I dull coated one and gloss coated the other. The dull is a little better.Close enough for me.It sucks we Canadians can't get certain things, something about the bilingual BS.I'm gonna get some alclid sent to my sister in Florida and have her mail it or bring it to me.That's the only loophole Ive thought of to get the stuff. -
Moebius Lonestar 1st test shot
mistermodel replied to Dave Metzner's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Tim,nice work as usual. The lonestar is a contemporary truck,as is long wheelbases are contemporary Truck builders have wanted a new truck for years,we finally got one , be happy -
It's just a matter of preference, and what options are on the truck. That kit part would of been a lightweight option. by not having the rear intake tubes and such a lot of pounds were removed from the truck, less weight = more payload. That box on top of the engine was actually the housing and filter all in one disposable unit.Freightliners were a very custom truck, you can put any type of intake on one and it would still be correct.I like duels so that's what I put on mine These 2 are different set ups This one has a intake mounted into the cab corner
-
Justin, krylon kacie is a good match for a cummins. Its a big cn so you can paint lots of engines, also its a good choise for interiors also.A lot of the engine commponents were installed before painting when new so allmost every thing would be painted

Engine Photos
mistermodel replied to ewaskew's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Just search the net for pics of the real ones. This will give you step buy step for modifying the kits.Ive done a few of them ,not hard, and looks good. Scroll down ,you'll find the engine stuff http://public.fotki.com/modeltrucks25thscale/model_magazine_articles/car_modeller/ -
Not a freightliner fan????,at least you like KW's.Me I'm not that much of a Pete fan.Might have something to do with they wern't avalible in Canada till around '76 and were kinda rare into the 80's.My favorite trucks seem to be the ones from my youth, riding shotgun with the oldman. Now back to wheels/tires.The 3 wheels showen are close to what is needed for 1/25,and probably work in most cases. The 1/32 are 18,but should be 19.5.For the old school smaller trailer wheels that were 15,the 1/43 measures 14.Never new the newrays were that much over scale for what they are used for.We realy need some 1/25 lo-pro wheels
-
I forgot,AMT had 1/43 trucks also,those tire maybe better

AMT sleeper question
mistermodel replied to rssschris's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Ben beat me to some points. You could also move the stack behind the sleeper,or leave the stack in the stock location and have a long boot like an AMT mercury sleeper. Here is a mack with an aftermarket bunk ,you can see the modified rear window http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=39032 -
dw,maybe you could use some one ton dually wheels.I want to build a low boy and think this is the easiest way to get doughnut tires.I have a bunch of old trucking magazines and in them there is a few pics of small tire trailers with full wheel disc hubcaps. You could make duels out of car parts and slap on your favorite hubcap for a custom vintage look, but it would have to be an old 60's truck to look right. highway, could you measure how tall those tires are,Ive allways wondered about them.

I go to that shop,I never knew you could buy them there.I need a few sets myself.Thinking about building a float.Maybe I'll see you there some time.I guess I'll look for some Nick lookin' guy.LOL
