From my experience building models back in the 60's I don't recall any models kitted with the parts in plastic bags. And if there were plastic bags I sure don't recall hazard warnings printed on any plastic bags back then. This fellow has what he is calling an original 60's issue of the SWC Willys up for auction but I believe it to be the 1989 reissue. Take a look at the photos and you'll see the parts in modern plastic bags with the hazard warnings printed on them. Anyone got an original 60's issue of this kit? If so, were the parts packaged in plastic bags? THAT my friend, is a really well done example of a slot car chassis. I used to build those chassis all the time back in the middle to late 60's when I was heavy into slot car racing. Nicely done Jairus! -

I say real. If it's a model it must be a large scale Pocher type kit or something scratchbuilt in a bigger scale. -
If you want some REALLY good Ansen's, get hold of Bobdude (Bob Dudek). He machines them out of aluminum and they look terrific! Here's a photo of one of his models with his machine aluminum Ansen's installed right from his Fotki site. I can't say enough good things about Bob's work! And Bob is a member here.. Hosted on Fotki

Here's a photo of one of the horse hypo needles. This sucker is about .085 O.D. Can you imagine having this thing injected into you? Even for a horse I have to believe it would still hurt like the dickens! Hosted on Fotki

You can buy stainless steel tubing from www.smallparts.com Also you can go to any Agway store...they sell hypo needles in some pretty large sizes for horse injections!

Actually I sent what I had to another guy off the Modelcarlist and he was going to finish it up and cast it. Dunno if he ever finished it as of yet though... Good to hear from you!

I'm lucky enough to own a small hobby lathe so I was able to turn the inside parts out of a solid piece of aluminum. But you can still do that part just as you're planning with the separate pieces of tubing. Then I just simply wound some electrical wire around a piece of solid rod to make the coils. You are of course correct in that many street headers are that small. I was trying to make my observations based primarily on what the OP was building...a full-on race big block. Not too many 1 5/8" inch headers used for big block race engines that I've ever seen!

I don't mean to critisize but are you quoting the right size for ignition wire as .030? As I think about that, if you are using .062 for the header pipes, that equates to 1 1/2" diameter exhaust pipes in 1:1 scale. So it would follow the that a wire size of .030 is just about exactly half of the header pipe size...or...about 3/4" diameter in 1:1 scale. That would be a pretty thick ignition wire!!! In actuality (1:1 scale) an 8mm ignition wire is .315 inch. This would result in a wire that should be approximately .012" diameter. And to help further, in 1/25th scale, an exhaust pipe of 2" diameter equates to .080, a 1 7/8" pipe equates to .075, a 1 3/4" pipe equates to .070. Not too many headers smaller than 1 3/4" diameter. The .062 would equal a pipe 1 1/2" diameter. You're modeling a full-on race big block there and it would use 2" pipes probably. Hope this helps. Terry Sumner

Bought 2 DD kits for $27.95 each from Len Feinberg's Fantastic Plastics. With shipping of $8.95 for both kits it came to $64.85 total. Not too bad I guess. Geez the first ones I bought back in the 60's were only a couple of bucks! LOL -
Working with Parafilm

I'm one of those guys that swears by Parafilm. Stretching it isn't hard...you just gotta get the hang of it. Simply cut off a piece about 3 or 4 inches long. Take off the backing paper. Hold each end between your thumb and first finger with that first finger contracted. In other words don't try to hold it by your fingertips. You want to be holding the edges with as much surface area of your fingers as possible. Then slowly start stretching it apart. Do not make any quick movements. The Parafilm is kind of thick and hard before stretching. But when you stretch it correctly it gets very thin. It's when it is very thin that it becomes the useful stuff that we need. A 3" piece will probably stretch to twice or three times it's unstretched length. Then I usually cut the ends off that I was holding and lay the thin part over whatever I want to mask off. The warmth of your hands helps to mash the stuff down tightly into small crevices. When I use it I use a brand new very sharp X-Acto blade to cut out areas of the Parafilm that I want paint to hit. If I get some time maybe I will record myself stretching it and post it on my Fotki page so you can watch it being done. Or maybe a Youtube video... -

Here's my latest addition to my 1:1 rides. 2003 Harley Davidson Softail Deuce Special Edition Screamin Eagle! Whew..that's a mouthful! Only 500 of these bikes were made. Each one not assembled on the regular assembly line but rather completely put together by 2 mechanics from start to finish. 95 cube engine, everything is chromed except the inner primary case. Frame is painted to match the tins colors. Lettering is 23 carat gold leaf! LOVE this bike! Wife loves it too...it matches her taste for shiny things and gold things! Hosted on Fotki -
Was up to TSI Harley yesterday with my son and saw this gorgeous 2003 100th anniversary Special Edition Screaming Eagle on the sales floor. This bike looked liked it just came out of the factory , it was so meticulously maintained. Perfect paint, loaded with chrome, 95 cubic inch twin cam engine, dual front disc brakes, Vance & Hines longshots pipes...fell in love with it and bought it! I should be going to pick it up tomorrow (thursday). I haven't owned a bike since 1978 so I'm pretty excited. The causative factor here was that both my boys just got bikes, both my brothers and my sister have bikes, my daughter and her fiance have a bike, all my friends except one have bikes. So every time they would go off to ride, I'd be standing there in the driveway, riding the bitter bus and waving a plaintive goodbye. Not this year by God! Here's a kind of lousy cell phone picture of the bike on the showroom floor. When I get it home I'll take some much better photos with a real camera. Hosted on Fotki

I feel your pain too man. I was laid off as of October 01, 2008. I have my retirement from the CSP, but it's only enough to pay the bills. However, things took a major change to the good for me yesterday and I got a new job...and a good one too! Supposed to start in 2 weeks. Man I can't wait. I love my wife and all but I'm getting real antzy being around the house constantly! Terry
