  1. George, you mean these? 1979 1981 The fins definitely look better, but they almost look too concave, and I wonder if the size is right. Definitely worth looking into!
  2. That's pretty cool!
  3. Well they're not really that close, just kinda reminiscent of the truck wheels. They have 16 holes/spokes. They measure out to about the right size. They kinda fit the tires from the Revell F350. You can't see, but it's in there loose. They fit these Goodyears better. They're too big for the ones with "255/60/R15" on them, but will fit the ones that only say "FLEXTEN". I don't really have any other big tires to test fit. Here's how they look under the F350 cab. They're a bit off, and most notably need a new centercap and 2x the lugnuts, plus the spokes/holes aren't exactly right.
  4. Nice! Does it have the 5.3L? Mine is a '99 LS ext cab with the 5.3L, all stock except a Flowmaster and K&N. Bought mine used 7 years ago at 28k miles, and it currently has 182k on it, still running strong. I love my truck, and if I ever needed to replace it, I'd get another 99-02 Chevy. Looks like a nice one you got there.
  5. This kit- Has very similar wheels, although they might not have enough little fins to be the same as the truck. I have a couple at home from a parts kit I picked up last nite. I'll measure to see what size they scale out to. They might be 15", but could be around 16", I'm not sure. I wonder if the hub and lugnuts could be removed, and replaced with resin dirt track car pieces, then cast in resin...? I'll get back to ya on the size, and take some closer up photos of the wheel this evening.
  6. I'd be surprised if the ink would stick, since it's not gonna soak in like it would on paper. I wonder if there would be any differences between laser jet, ink jet, bubble jet, etc... Interesting idea, I had never thought of it.
  7. I LOVE the opposing scallops! Beautiful car, beautiful paint job! I'm saving these pics for myself for inspiration...
  8. Ok, those exhaust pipes are a bit over the top, borderline obscene.... ....and I really like them! This is a funky little build, I like it.
  9. After seeing the 1:1, I agree with Harry. I was thinking the gauges would be set deeper into the panel or something, I guess... Are you using the AMT 72 Chevelle kit for this build? I'm looking at my AMT 72, and I'm thinking a 70 dash would look closer to the 1:1 pic than the 72's kit dash. The 72 kit dash doesn't have that horizontal separation line below the idiot lights. Your 1:1 looks just like my 1:1 70, but mine still has the stock sweeper speedo with the gas gauge off to the side and the row of idiot lights below.
  10. I'd say tan, tan & white, tan & root beer, light gray & white, or maybe black if you use different finishes (flat, semi-gloss) in different areas to bring out the details. I think the hood scoop looks ok as-is, but flat black might look ok too...
  11. I like that a lot! Looks good!
  12. Plus at least one here... I'll keep my eyes out for em in a month or so. Thanks for posting this well written and well photographed detailed build thread.
  13. Looks great so far! When does/did this kit hit store shelves? It's news to me...
  14. Thanks for the positive comments, guys. Rick, I haven't seen the insides of that Cobra kit, and haven't seen one on the shelf for a while. I had looked at Keith Marks, but he doesn't have 79-81 Cobra decals. I took some shots under mine last nite for reference on painting/weathering the driveshaft and rear axle, and found that the center of the body is still gray primer, so I'm thinking about stripping the floor pan and repainting it all, leaving the right primer section down the middle. I don't have much time invested in detailing the gas tank or crossmember, so that's not a big deal, and I think I want it more correct... I might be able to shoot the body again this evening, as long as it doesn't get too cold.
  15. Post a pic of the 1:1 dash so we are sure we know what you're describing... I think I got it in my head, but... I would cut out the area of the kit dash that will be covered, fabricate an appropriately-sized panel to replicate the real one, drill holes in it in the right spots, add the bezels, and then just put the gauge decals behind it (without applying them to anything), assuming the gauge decals are the right color and everything on the decal paper. There are a few kits (RM 66 El Camino comes to mind) that have gauge decals that you can do this way, and it ends up looking pretty nice.
  16. That looks GREAT!
  17. Around here, Hobby Lobby has a much better selection than Michael's.
  18. More progress: (I will paint the transmission immediately before installing the assembly into the chassis.)
  19. Dunno... I had a crack in the front subframe, so I glued it and set it aside. I used the Revell 93 Cobra chassis to mock up the suspension and wheels, and they are 99% identical, with the exception of the little rail molded in along the back edge. The 93 has about 3/8" on each side that is completely flat and doesn't have that little rail. Other than that, the chassis and suspension is exactly the same ... which makes sense because the 1:1 cars were pretty much the same too. Dunno what condition the molds are in though. I think the 93 Cobra is related to the GT 'vert kit that's out there, because there's an 87-89 (pre-1990, pre-airbag) steering wheel in the 93 Cobra kit. Since I started this thread, I've detail painted the turbo and exhaust, and have wired the engine. Will get some pics up later.
  20. Dave, I never knew this kit existed until I had it in my hands, but I'm having fun with it. Rick, not cold here right now, but it's very wet and humid...
  21. Thanks. Yeah, even in scale, these are odd-sized wheels, since I had issues finding other tires to fit right. I'm trying to get the engine wired up right now. Will post more pics as I make more progress.
  22. That Biscayne looks like it's almost done, and looks killer already! The Buick and T-bird are very nice too. There's not a bad one in the bunch...
  23. What wheels are they? Can someone post a pic? I can't find a pic of the kit...
  24. I'm not very good at build threads because I forget to take pictures along the way... I picked this kit up at the Houston Autorama swap meet Friday after Thanksgiving, and have been working on it when I can. I hadn't been doing much modeling lately, so this is kinda refreshing. The kit was complete except for one tire- It had 3 Firestone tires in it. I got home and didn't have a matching Firestone, and was having problems finding tires that fit the wheels, so I started trying different wheels until I realized it was supposed to have Michelin TRX tires. I dug around in the closet until I found a set, which ended my search for a wheel/tire combo. This is the only pic I took in primer, while trying wheels/tires. These are the wheels I'm using, but not the tires. After detail painting. I'm not sure if I will keep the spokes silver, or do them Testor's Steel or Gloss Black... The car will look similar to this one... (Pic courtesy of www.earlycobra.com) But it does not have the Cobra decals, just the decals on the box art, which I will not be using. It also has some type of aftermarket hood and front valence, so the raised center of the hood will be flat black, as will the grille area, like on the box art. I'm still debating on interior colors- black, red, or kind of a butterscotch-colored brownish tan... Let me know what you think... I started by painting the top half white, but I'm not sure if I'm happy with the finish on the body, so I may strip it and start over. I am still learning my airbrush, and I think the paint was too thick when I started spraying it, since no air pressure adjustment would help, and it was spattering. I thinned it some and got it to lay down a little better, then noticed some lint or fuzz or something in it... Grrr. I've done a little wet-sanding, but haven't sprayed a second coat yet. Since these are unibody cars, I did the chassis pan white, as well as the K-member, and began detail painting. It's too bright to me, so I will probably get some flat clear and add a little gray to spray some light road grime on it. This car has the early turbo 2.3L four cylinder, with the turbo on the driver's side, instead of the later 2.3 turbos like the Turbo T-birds and SVO's (with the intercooler and turbo on the passenger side). It will be wired. I'm home sick today with the crud, so I'm getting a little work done. Weather is crappy though, so there won't be any painting progress...
