How do I get the old format back
Gregg replied to a topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If you visit a website frequently, your web browser stores elements of the web page in a cache so that they do not have to be downloaded again each time you visit, making your browsing faster. These elements might include photographs, pages you have already viewed, or style sheets. In some cases, when the website is changed, you may not be able to view the changes because you are actually viewing the cache. There are two ways to solve this problem: a hard refresh, which bypasses the cache and loads the actual page as it is stored on the server, and clearing your cache, which is something you should do periodically anyway. To refresh a website normally, you hit the “refresh†button, or the F5 key, or press the command key for your operating system, such as the Apple key or the Control key, and the letter R. To hard refresh, the command or control key is held down while clicking on the refresh button or pressing F5. Alternatively, the user can hold down the shift key, the command/control key, and the letter R. A hard refresh will bypass any cached files and display the web page as it currently appears on the server. -

Okay, there are still some bugs here. I tried Firefox on the Mac, and can't get but the default skins Thanks, Mark! Will have to see what's going on. Could be a cache thing, I will check. So, don't sweat too much on this. Get back to building models!!!!! -

There are some new skins on the bottom to try out. I like the Treble version so far A lot of the developers are away for the holidays so I can't get questions answered yet. Seriously, switch to Firefox, or Safari, and you won't regret it. Explorer is the worse, it is so vulnerable to attacks no one in the computer field recommends it. I would strongly suggest everyone just play around with the features, trying out different skins. If you really hate it so much and want to leave, let me know, and I will remove your account and all posts/threads. As you can see, there are no ads, no required re-registration, no heavy hand of moderating, just plain "new" model car builders. Why call it change? It's called improving. I know you will probably hate the new web site as well, and that's something I will deal with January 1. -

The view new posts is now View New Content. Is it this hard? Updates and upgrades are necessary I do not believe in staying the same. Adapting to what's new is the only way to survive This is the base for the changes to everything coming this way. As for it ain't being broke, it was broke, there was a lot of issues and problems that no one sees. This will take some more tweaking There will be new skins and templates coming soon. They're not cheap, or free (well, some of them are, but you know me, I don't go that route) So, for now, Just browse the forum, make notes of problems you see, and email them to me. Check out the new features and see what you feel works best. Please don't post manini comments on the upgrades here, it will take time to get things perfect. Email me with major problems. There may be some browser issues, I know Downie said that Firefox works great, and it is a lot safer browser to use. The links and other changes will be done soon. Thanks for your patience with all of this

A good Question for Gregg?
Gregg replied to Nick Notarangelo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I do have all the old issues as Quark files, but then, a lot of the images/links are not complete. Probably for the first year it would be best to scan them, but we'll see Another one for the project book... -

One thing too. We didn't go direct to plate until a couple of years ago. All of the first issues were down straight to film. I use to do that myself, make the films Even stripped a page once, and put it on the press. That was a blast! Totally from start to finish! Well, that one page at least Anyway (G, get off the meds), to create PDF's from the early versions would probably take eight hours a day, for at least one month straight. Each and every page would have to be made into a PDF Thanks for starting the topic, Nick. Maybe it will spark some more interest The new site will have links to some downloadable PDF's (FOR FREE), nudge, nudge. -
A good Question for Gregg?
Gregg replied to Nick Notarangelo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nick, I have had this on the "burner" for many years. There are a couple of major points that I should address. Eirk is right, it would cost a small fortune. Yes, modern print shops have the ability to produce PDF's now. Most, if not all, use PDF's to process the files from the client. Most of the PDF's that are created have to go through further processing and then on to pagination software, then to the plate maker. These are single PDF files, from each layout/article. We do not combine the whole magazine into one Quark file. Each layout/article is a separate file, each with its own images, fonts, tickets. When I (I mean Harry :-)) create the files for final printing, they are Quark files. They get sent to the office for the PDF processing/printing. Yes, the final files are PDFs. No, they are not useable, not as is. To say that back issues can be done cheaply is not correct. To create a cheap PDF, using what "everyone" has, would produce a cheap product. It would look cheap. If you look at the online digital version of the April issue, that was a lot of work, and money. I paid for that myself. To do that for all the back issues would require another 10-20 hours per week, for at least two to four months. There would have to be indexes, links, nice layouts, compatibility issues, etc. And then add the cost of the doing labels, art work, printing, etc., it goes way beyond cheap. I don't do anything cheap. I do everything first class. To do anything less would be a backwards step, and to me, an insult to all the hard work, blood, sweat and tears that Harry and everyone else has put into polishing Model Cars Mag to what it is now. Yes, there will be back issues available, but that takes time. Unless someone has the time, and ability, to donate to this process, it will be on the "to do" list for a while. That's why the web site has taken so long to be redone. Hope that answers the question I am glad there is interest in the back issue CD's, I have wanted to post a question on this for a while now. I am linking up past best of articles to the new web site, which should help wet the appetite of our new readers. Hope that answers the question posed by ps. I am still on the first CS! (donations are always welcome!) And yes, I know I'm late, more on that later. -
Unfornately, I am back down again. Had a major relapse, and don't know yet if will back under the knife. November was mailed, December is about a shake of a stick away. January will be behind also, but we will be caught up with the contest issue, February/March Thank you all for your patience with me, once again. And Harry, thank you so much for being my life preserver.

Does that mean I'm a hit man? no, just helps with the ranking and searches. Thanks so much to Rich and Chris for doing this.

No, I think it only logs once per viewer. Thanks, George!

Guys, I need your help here. Can every one of you please go to the YouTube video review of the Big Tub for me. I want to get as many hits to the review as possible, to bump it up in the hit list for YouTube, which will help the rankings of the video, and this site. Thanks!
-
Rich and Chris came over tonight with their finished Big Tubes. I did something different, and it will be something I will be doing as often as I can. We are doing video reviews also, from the guys that build and review the models. Here is the YouTube link: Let me know what you think!
