Littlemotorkarco for chroming resin parts?
Hawk312 replied to Hawk312's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Thanks for the info Roger. Sounds like he is the one to deal with. Plus he is less than an hour away from me. I have littlemotorkarco@talon.com for his email. Does he usually respond pretty quickly? -
Thanks guys. Help me out here though...is it just me, or does this body have waaayyy too much length? Or maybe it is too narrow? Or the roof has a smashed look? Or is it just me?

Thanks! `ll be going with the modified tires from the newer Revell funny car kit. They are the two on the left. I think they are still just slightly under sized, but the Pegasus ones look way to big IMO.

After the L88 corvette project, which is going on 6 months now, I am looking to do something quick and easy. Hopefully this will do it. I had this one sitting around for well over a decade, possibly 2. Also, this is starting out as the Snow car, but may end up as the Prudhomme Army Monza Funny Car. We shall see. First, the built model pictured is not what is in the box. The box art appears to be the 1/16th kit. I was really disappointed with the actual contents, which is why it was shelved for so long. The wheels and tires are horribly undersized and in no way accurate (though the rear wheels are close). The tires are also the two piece versions, split down the middle. So I will be borrowing parts from other kits. Here is what I am starting with: And here is what I have so far: I made a mold and cast the wheels from the `66 Malibu kit for this build to replace the kit wheels. The tires above, from left to right, a tire from a newer Revell F/C kit, the same plus the rear wheel from the Malibu kit, the kit wheel and tire (notice the size difference), and a Pegasus/So-Real slick and newer top fuel kit wheel. Notice the size difference of the kit tire and the tire on the far right, and the kit tire is in the foreground! The Pegasus/So-Real scales out to about 36" if memory serves me.

That came out about 10x as nice as my first model. Keep at it....every model is a learning experience.

These look great! Thanks for posting everyone!

Casting resin and air bubbles
Hawk312 replied to Hawk312's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Thanks for the tips guys. I`ll give them a try! -
Lots of great eye candy in this thread. I`m not sure if I posted these, but this is what I have:
-
I am using a simple 1 piece mold cast from a kit wheel. The mold itself looks perfect. When I cast the wheels though, there is always air bubbles right around the rim or around the wheel lugs/center cap area. I have tried both the 3 minute white and 7 minute tan alumilite casting resin. I tried pouring very slowly immediately after mixing and "flexing" the mold immediately after pouring which seems to help alot, but I still always have an air bubble somewhere. I have also tried using baby powder without much success. Poking holes through the bottom of the mold doesn`t seem to help either. Is there something else I need to do? Or what other options does one have if they are on a tight budget? Is switching resins my only choice? Thanks.

Cool. In it, I give details on how I do the finish on my cars. I really like what Harry did on the cover, showing the contrast between my dealer showroom `vette and Dr. Cranky`s post apocalyptic wrecker.

A couple more:
-
Hi Todd, Yes, I have built more than a couple of these. I`ll post some pictures below. The kit goes together pretty well with no surprises and builds up really nicely. I usually skip the photo-etch set for it, as I think some of the kit`s chrome plated parts are more accurate (the gas cap in particular), though the 427 badges are closer to the correct thickness on the PE parts. Let me know if you have any questions.

Amazing finish! It looks so real! Great work! -
Ok...so I am still working on this guys. Since this is the 1/12 scale kit that comes with sidepipes, and the real 1:1 car didn`t have these, I have to scratch build the entire exhaust front to back. I used aluminum tubing, and then created a master and cast the mufflers. It was a bear to get all the angles just right. I am also in the middle of modifying and recasting the wheels because I am not happy with the originals. I am pretty sure the master is ready now though, and hope to have some pictures soon. This seems like the never-ending project.

Thanks everyone! I am pretty sure I used duplicolor red for everything, topped with dullcote, and then kens kustom fuzy fur and testors flat enamel for the flocking. The red flocking was the bright red color if memory serves me.

LED bulbs, best place to buy from?
Hawk312 replied to Jeremy Jon's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Guys, the ones without leads, do they require heat sinking when soldering? Also, anyone have any pics of some of the projects where you have used these? -
Big Kahuna - 1/16 F/C - New Body Arrived - 1/12
Hawk312 replied to Nitrozilla's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Oh man. Sorry to see that. I have never seen a reaction like that. Those craters are so deep, it almost looks as though it might have re-flowed your underlying base and maybe even primer coats? That is strange. -
What he said!! Also, I`m not sure how long you have been away from the hobby, but the quality of the new kits, at least IMO, is much better than 15-20 years ago, Comparing Revell`s first attempt to the AAR or the `69 Camaro with the latest `70 Cuda and the current Camaro kits, I would gladly pay double for the latter as opposed to the former. I think it is a good time for our hobby.
-
I`ll third that.
-
Yep, saw the same ones here. I also saw the 55 Jukebox Ford and the Polar Lights Candies and Hughes funny car. I still haven`t seen the `70 Cuda (S&M or stock) or the 1/12 Foose Camaro yet. I hope to see them once they restock.
-
I`ll second this. I would love to see one of these built. I am not seeing these kits at Hobby Lobby yet. Are you guys?
-
Them is fightin words Harry. That Ferrari is magnificent btw.

Duplicolor is great stuff! For clean up, I just use regular off the shelf lacquer thinner. For clear coat, I just use their clear from the can. It should have been on the shelf with the other colors. Here is my Camaro which was finished with duplicolor colors and clear:
