GT 350 decals in 1/12 scale. What to do?
Hawk312 replied to Hawk312's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks guys. I think the decals on that RC body will be to light to work on this model, as the hood/roof/trunk stripes are dark blue. Mike, I would definitely be interested if your friend is able to print a set. I think the customer would be willing to pay at least a little bit for his trouble. -
Let`s say you were building a very rare kit for someone, perhaps Revell`s 1/12 `65 Shelby GT 350 Mustang, and when the GT 350 decals disintegrated within seconds of hitting water, what would you do? :( The kit decals are completely unusable. I have never printed decals, so I don`t think that will be an option. I am thinking maybe there are some RC Shelby bodies that come with the decals or stickers, but I haven`t been able to find any. Anyone know if anybody makes these on the aftermarket? I mostly build GM in large scale, so this is new territory for me. Thanks.

OOOOOOOOOhhhhhhhhhh....I remember that one from the "other" forum way back when. I still love it!

Here is is in action: At that speed, I would think normal plastic wheels would just shatter from the centrifugal force. -

Thanks guys! Thanks for clarifying the paint for everyone Brett. Don, no clear over the decals. I`ve never had much luck doing that. -
Ha...I just stopped by this forum to search for a thread on making wheels, and here it is right at the top. Can you expand on what you mean by " shaped the plastic accordingly"? I assume you started with a flat solid block of styrene stock? Any ideas on what you would do if you don`t have a base rim to base your wheel off of? I am trying to replicate this wheel, in large scale of course :

Can I see your 1/8 vettes?
Hawk312 replied to dryvr12's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nice vettes guys! I have all of them except the silver one, and hope to build them all some day....whenever I get some free time. Very nice! How did you do the red striping? -
Looking great Gregg!! As far as aftermarket parts, I would like to see wheels and a hood to convert it to a Super Snake:

That`s going to look baaaaaadddd!

FULL BUILD REVIEW: 1/12 Revell Shelby Mustang GT500
Hawk312 replied to David Thibodeau's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
No fair taking pictures of the real 1:1 interior and calling it a model. Seriously though, that looks killer! What are you using to get the decals to adhere to the semi-gloss seats? -

Anyone know when this will be available? Revell`s site said August, but now I am seeing some sites say late September. :( -
FULL BUILD REVIEW: 1/12 Revell Shelby Mustang GT500
Hawk312 replied to David Thibodeau's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
When can I get one??? I am still glad Revell stuck with the less detail/lower price direction. The subject is right, the box art is impressive, it looks as though it will build into an impressive display piece without too much fiddling, and I think this has the potential to bring alot of people who would never build a model car into the hobby. The average Ford/Mustang guy, even though there might little interest in the hobby, by just looking at the box art and it`s impressive size and might decide to give our hobby a try. If it builds nicely, he may be hooked, and we have a new recruit. However, fiddling with a couple hundred parts, trying to get doors to line up just right, and painting 20 body panels instead of several, may result in losing that person and maybe another generation or two to the hobby forever. Oh yeah....when can I get one??? -
Duplicolor paint pulling away from masked edges?
Hawk312 replied to Hawk312's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Good point. The metallic vs. solid color is another aspect I didn`t think of. On this one, it is in reverse compared to the Camaro (metallic stripes on the Mustang vs. solid on the Camaro). BTW, I`ve been a "shlub" in training for almost 30 years now, and still messing things up. :D Thanks everyone for the ideas. I am going to visit my Local Hobby Lobby tomorrow and try either Royal Blue Pearl or Deja Blue. -
Duplicolor paint pulling away from masked edges?
Hawk312 replied to Hawk312's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Oh sorry guys, I should clarify. I`m not sure if you can see in the pictures that there appears to be a faint blue line outside of each edge of each stripe. This is where the masking tape line was originally. When I first sprayed the blue, it went right up to that line, and I guess as it dried, it pulled back from the line. When I first removed the tape, the lines were actually razor sharp. Now you can see around the front of the scoop, the white center line is actually thinner, and it gets thicker as you move across either way from it. At the front of the scoop it seems to have held its place not pulled back as much. -
Duplicolor paint pulling away from masked edges?
Hawk312 replied to Hawk312's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Hmmm...interesting. I didn`t even think of that. Actually, from memory, I think I used the Tamiya tape for the Camaro, and the 3M stuff for this one. Maybe I will give the Tamiya a try? -
Ok, this is the first time that I remember having this much of an issue with Duplicolor sprays. Or maybe Model Master Lacquer? I am using Duplicolor Metallic Blue over Model Masters Wimbledon White. I sprayed the Wimbledon White first, sanded with 1000 grit, masked stripes and sprayed a light coat of Duplicolor clear, then sprayed the blue stripes. After a day or two, I checked on it, and noticed the blue had pulled back from the masked edge. Thinking it might have been the clear underneath, I allowed it to fully cure, then sanded again with 1000 grit really well, remasked, and then sprayed just the blue in light mist coats. After 24 hours I checked it again, and you can see in the pictures below it did the exact same thing. The only thing I can think of is some kind of incompatibility between the Model Masters and Duplicolor formulas, but I don`t ever remember having issues between the two. Some of you guys may remember my Fathom Green 1/12 Z/28 from way back when, which I used the same process for without issues. Unless you guys have any ideas, I guess I am just going to try to find another metallic blue color in the Model Master Lacquer line I guess. Here`s the Camaro that didn`t give me any fits:

FULL BUILD REVIEW: 1/12 Revell Shelby Mustang GT500
Hawk312 replied to David Thibodeau's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
This is looking great! I see you used Micro Sol. Did you have trouble getting the decals to conform on some spots? I`ll also 2nd the request for the tire measurements. Anyone know when we can get one of these? -
Thanks for the kind words everyone. I think I am finally at a decent point with this body. I am sooooo looking forward to doing something other than body work on this thing. So far, about 2 cans of high build primer spent on this thing, which should give you an idea of how horrible this body is. I am actually blocking this one!

FULL BUILD REVIEW: 1/12 Revell Shelby Mustang GT500
Hawk312 replied to David Thibodeau's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Duplicolor right on the bare plastic?!?! That will be really nice to be able to do that. The body looks really convincing, IMO. Im not sure about the tires though. Is it just me, or are the sidewalls a little tall? -
FULL BUILD REVIEW: 1/12 Revell Shelby Mustang GT500
Hawk312 replied to David Thibodeau's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I was wondering if we were ever going to see this day. Revell tooling another large scale kit!!! B) :) I cannot wait to get ahold of one of these. Did he say when they would be available? I am actually glad they molded the doors shut. I am building Revell`s 1/12 `65 Mustang Shelby, and it is a pain. I ended up glueing the doors shut anyway. I am also glad to see Revell forgoing the G**dy**r tire markings and instead putting the money into developing great kits. Hopefully this sells like crazy and we see more big scale car kits. Also, love the box art! I was planning to do mine in that color! -
Very cool!! I really like that Mustang too.
-
Heh heh, sow`s ear of a kit! Thanks Bill!

A little more filling and sanding. It`s getting close now. I am really glad I adjusted the coves. It makes for a much more realistic side profile. What do you guys think?
