  1. Well, I would first recommend that you try posting your question in the help/question section.anyway, I really like using two way tape for glass, it's easy to use & takes away all risk of damage - it works well.
  2. Right on Greg - I'm with you, I'll take the fun kits, with fantastic & creative box art any day.... The REAL MODELS.
  3. I think Greg means an earlier time frame within reason & I'd have to agree ..... I really can't see too many of todays modellers running out to buy a hunk of wood in a box
  4. Nothing against what you believe to be a good cause Tom, but .....I have a couple of concerns regarding the museum .... firstly, I am deeply put off after hearing from two close friends that donated to Mark; shortly after the opening; neither received any form of thank you, not even a note; or message or any recognition of any kind that their models arrived there at all, which I think is really rude. Secondly, it seems as though the museum has very limited access to the public, ( any museums I have visited are open at least 6 days a week & have regular visiting hours ) ;also, I don't understand why the website wouldn't contain all of the "donations" clearly for all to see ( in a more transparent manner ) & be set up in a way that all could visit & enjoy ( especially because of the very limited access. ) & be updated on a regular basis ( It states on the home page that it was to be updated May 2015, unless I'm not navigating properly, I don't see any type of virtual tour in any form, or any improvement of the site in any way at all . My third point, is regarding future ownership of the museum, what happens to the contents; once Mark & Jim - ( "the trustee" ) pass away ? Is there 100% guarantee that no donations will ever be sold ?
  5. This is the best example of weathering I've seen in a really long time, very refreshing. great diorama - thanks
  6. So much for my thoughts, of trying to make a replacement using a diamond ring on a crystal salad bowl.
  7. Great build Ed - I dig it
  8. You need some type of form, usually, for I've done, the original part is used. if you have a cracked windshield that you need to replace, you'll want to repair it & make sure the crack is glued /filled/sanded well, the plastic will pick up flaws; Plastacine is used to fill the inside cavity & make the part rigid / stable & able to mount in the centre of your plate. Avoid anything with too much undercut, anything that may get locked in; Pump, repeat & keep going to get the best form & always keep the little holes clear on the plate by cleaning with a pin to remove extra plasticine.
  9. Well, not to be rude & tell you to ignore all the other paint advise, but with your current setup, water based is the only logical way to go; without better circulation ; you will be smelling any & all type of solvent based paint. Now, if at some point you are able to get a proper setup, then you want to go with the real deal - good automotive lacquer ; not hobby paints it's like day & night - there is no comparrison, despite what some half-assed - so called "experts" may preach.
  10. Perfect choice. Wear a good respirator / charcoal mask when spraying & be sure to replace the cartridges on a regular basis as needed. try to seal an area off with sheet plastic ( from ceiling to floor - have a panel of the heavy plastic with a slit as doorway ) - Seal off any vents to avoid any fumes entering other areas of the house. The ideal set up - use one window for fan & adjacent window that can be opened ( 2-3 inches is fine ) - for cross ventilation. Despite low fumes with water based paint, do not asume it is safer than solvent based paint - they still are made of harmful pigments, although they may have a different carrier than solvent based; you don't want them in your system & your pores & skin will readily absorb them. Take your time learning, try to adjust the airbrush & pressure until you get the results you desire. Expect mistakes & learn by them - they are part of the learning curve. Distance & speed of your passes are very important & once you get the feel of it, will become second nature. If you need help feel free to message me.
  11. Casting lines ? ... what casting lines ? ..... looks good to me & I bet you enjoyed doing it
  12. If you don't mind adding a non-stock item, this may be another thing to consider ? ( or something along these lines - either hood pins, or some type of exterior fastener )
  13. To me, it looks as though this ( see pic ) would be the problem, is there any chance to remove it & see what the fit is like then ? .... I wouldn't try & alter anything, if it fit before; if it turns out that it is this engine part that is the problem, try just placing it where it should go, and try the fit, put the cover on - if it goes on ok, carefully lift the cover to see if maybe that part should be at a slightly different angle / position; or maybe a little bit of material needs to be sanded on the inside of the cover
  14. Go with a Paache - easy to clean, solid & good paint flow. listen to Pete - get your stuff at Coast Airbrush, great service, solid place - when shopping for one, avoid trying to cut corners; you'll get what you pay for and a place with useless service.
  15. As well - try Firebird Designs Type it in google ( although his site is a little tricky to navigate- once you figure it out, you'll be glad ) - his quality is nice & has a wide variety - he also does custom orders
  16. Best thing to do is to have a new windshield vacuformed, or get another from Modelhaus, they have for a Comet & a Parklane - $4 front & rear
  17. True Art, but then there are the "so-called experts" ..... the guys who build like garbage, but always find it in themselves to give pointers & pick out "mistakes" , on others builds. I had a brilliant idea of getting in touch with a fella who had done a few hand made signboards, for my models, years ago; well he had won 1, ( One ) contest years ago; it seems that some of his cards weren't still in the deck when I recently saw him. After way too much partying, it seems he didn't know the difference in lettering sizes, he made a bunch which were all around 1/8 scale; none which I could use for 1/25. To top it off, he seemed to go out of his way to point out numerous flaws on all my models; & then I saw what he had been hacking on for the past 15 years; it was special; really "special" ( scary, horrible ) . Needless to say, that will be the last contact with him. ....... I make it a point to be my own judge .... and guess what ? .... I found that when I'm the judge of my own builds , I always win
  18. I threw mine out, I tried it once on my floor & it was garbage - I think I'll just go with carpet.
  19. Grandma, don't mess with the computer, it's not a toy ......please go back to bed, the doctor is coming soon to give you your medication & change your diapers
  20. Sorry Geoff, that IS NOT LACQUER ...... it is 2K URETHANE GLOP ..... and the thinner does not count as a " THIRD PART " .... it never has, and never will...... THIS ..... is THE REAL DEAL.
  21. Don't put pressure on yourself, learn at your own pace & try to not get caught up in too many distractions. Do each step as a model, within a model , like others have said, start off easy & work up, unless you prefer to keep it on a comfortable level...... there's no sense taking on so much, that it becomes like work & frustrating. I've been building a really long time, I build for myself, period. Never been in a club, have no desire to enter any contests, etc. I like to have 2 or 3 on the go at the same time, so while something is drying, I can go work on another, other guys prefer to take on one at a time; there are no rules. If what you were doing before didn't seem to work for you, no probs, just switch a few things around, how long were you plugging away at the models a day, or per week ? ...... maybe too long ? , try doing a couple steps, take a break & come back to it with a fresh look. Set aside time for only you, that is your modelling time, not shopping, not answering phones, feeding dogs, etc....YOUR TIME. If at any time you feel frustration & stress coming , walk away for awhile & forget it until you feel up to dealing with it once more. Paint is the main thing for me, I enjoy that the most, but honestly; even if I walk away for a month, ( because every average guy does tend to have other obligations, etc. ) ...... I really, really look forward to getting back to them & having fun & for me, it's a magical thing, that transports me back to simpler, more innocent, happy times, watching cartoons, eating a peanut butter sandwich & messing around with models .... and that's what I still do ( I'II be watching the Flintstones very shortly ) - Now go have fun
