The People's Republic of California mandated changes in our thinner content a few years ago, and the new stuff is OK for cleaning (air) brushes, but doesn't work nearly as well for thinning paint any more. I don't think the change was nation-wide, but I don't know. Can I get a couple of people in Arizona and Nevada to go into Home Depot or Lowes, look at the cans, and post the ingredients? Thanks!

Best wishes for both you and your wife. I hope she makes a full and speedy recovery.

Non-Yellowing Clearcoat-In Search Of
Dave Ambrose replied to 69NovaYenko's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I get good results from Testor's "Wet Look" Clear. It's a lacquer and lacks the yellow tinge of the enamel. -
Modelhaus Not taking New Orders Once Again

Thanks for the pointer. Web site is more or less offline. But, there's some good stuff buried in that list too! -
Modelhaus Not taking New Orders Once Again

I feel like a noobie, but how do you order things from Modelhaus? Do they have a catalog? -
That is a truly beautiful build. I fell in love with the Avanit (again) after seeing one at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It was in the California Modern exhibit, and looked totally at home there.

We had a nice meal, in deference to his British father, we had it at a brewery. Then saw one of our local clubs put on a lion dance. He's thoroughly mixed. Everything you could ask for in a son-in-law.

It isn't, but my son-in-law is half-Chinese.

Jefbo, you have it right. At least for cars, OOB means you use only the parts in the box in a manner consistent with the instructions. If the instructions call for you to make a cut-out for a supercharger, or hood scoop, you can make those. You are free to use whatever paint, decals, and foil you want. That would include washes. We would accept flocking or embossing powder as a finishing technique. Filler is OK to the extent that it corrects molding defects. If you are going to enter a model in OOB, please keep the instruction sheet, and put it under the model. We need to see them so it will be eligible. I hate it when we have to disqualify a nicely done OOB build because of no instructions. Disclaimer: I can only speak to the model car judging at Model Expo in June.

An Interview with Steve Moal

Very interesting article. I like that he sets elegance as a goal. That's too often forgotten these days and it shows in his designs. -
Taking Pictures of Model cars
Dave Ambrose replied to drodg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I use a Canon EOS 60D camera, with an 18-135 mm zoom lens and a +2 close-up lens, If I'm shooting at the SDMCC meeting, I'm indoors with fluorescent lights. Depth of field is a big problem. I put the camera in aperture priority, and stop the lens down all the way (f/22). I usually need a tripod as the exposures can be anywhere from 1/2 to a couple of seconds. This gets everything in focus. The room light is even enough by itself. If you want good illumination from a flash, you'll need a couple of them and probably diffusers. -
What are your 2016 building plans.

I'll second the LED lamp with a magnifier. (I think I have the same one as Harry.) It's helped me a lot, and it doesn't get hot under the lights.

These guys are great. I used to visit their shop when I was working in Toronto. They had hot coffee and cookies on the weekend, and were always happy to take the time to talk to this slightly homesick Californian that wandered into their store.

Getting another kid into the hobby
Dave Ambrose replied to mikemodeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Kids have different priorities (as well they should).Seems like this would be a good place for a snap kit. They go together quickly, don't need painting, and are rugged enough to be played with afterward. They aren't cars, but simple Gundam kits are great in that they are intended to be played with after building and are pretty easy to build. My nephew has a couple of sons who will be visiting us this summer. We're planning to introduce them to Gundams.
