  1. Several of the Boyds colors are a bit more translucent then the others , you happened to pick one of them ! From personal experience , I can tell you this color is not going to " jump " for you , it is a subtle color . Adding the Pearl X overcoats will make it dance a bit more for you . You can also add different colors into the Ice Blue mix itself .
  2. Jim , Be that as it may ... You were one of the smart ones , you bought the DVD ! That caught you up real quick , all that's left for you to do now is practice and experiment . From what I have seen ... You caught on real quick , your paintwork has improved significantly in a very short period of time . Most of which , can be credited to your passion and diligence for acheiving quality paint finishes .
  3. Monty , Best suggestion for examples , go to my website at oldmansmodels.com . Look for the Jack's Frost ' 69 Nova . This was shot with a light blue base , and then shot over with the Ice Blue Pearl . Another thing that I love about the enamels from Testor , you can mix & match different colors to your heart's content ! Never , ever a worry with incompatibility !
  4. They are pretty to say the least ! You need to mist coat and be sure to get into the recessed areas first . The chrome paint reflects the color back through the pearls , creating a bright span of color spectrum that is quite vivid !
  5. Wasn't too bad this year ! ' 1/18th scale '32 Roadster - customer ' 66 Nova ProStreet - customer '57 Chevy street machine ' 65 Impala pro street ' 33 Willys drag panel ' 68 Super Stock Drag Charger 15 completed bodies for the tables 17 painted bodies for customers Possible completion of the ' 47 Aerosedan Prostreet before years end ! How much fun I had ? Can't count that high !
  6. It doesn't necessarily have to be a metallic color , any corresponding standard color will help bring out the Ice Blue Pearl . Try sky blue and watch what happens !
  7. If you bring the wimmins with feathers , bet you eat for free !
  8. I dunno , you guys might have seen feathers..... All I saw were things that have gotten me in trouble my entire life ! Ain't it grand ! Lol !
  9. Your problem might lie with how many coats of primer you applied . One coat more , maybe a bit heavier than what was applied to the rest of the body ? It doesn't take much to affect the color of the top coat . A slight shade darker primer will create this , especially when shooting standard colors for your top coat .
  10. A Donn Yost paint stand consists of either a 1/2 or 3/4 diameter black iron pipe nipple , preferably 6 inchs in length , with masking tape , sticky side up , wrapped in place on top . Simply push the body down on it , now you have a hand held paint stand , with the ability to rotate it. 360 degrees by simply turning your wrist . I use various lengths and diameters to suit my needs , parts wise ! After painting , slide the stand into your cabinet ! That is a Donn Yost paint stand !
  11. Mike , Grab up Momma and come to the NNL East in April , there will be a whole lot of new colors , both metallics and pearls . Make sure you take care of that ceiling in the new paint booth too .
  12. This is all so easy to avoid .... Simply slip into the next childhood and put the pedal to the floor ! Works for me !
  13. If this is the route you are going to travel , I have to dive into the shop and find something for you . It should give you almost perfect scale lace panels . Be careful with the automotive stuff , I had no luck with it , it hates enamel with a passion !
  14. What's this thread about ? Can't seem to recall .
  15. Doc , You hit it out of the park ! From personal experience , I guarantee that the photos don't even come close to capturing the color or the visual array of the pearls under direct lighting .
  16. Okay ! We'll just have to keep looking and experimenting with the Pearl X , see what we can come up with . The Stoplight Red has to be seen in person , check it out at your hobby shop , might be a good base for what you are looking for .
  17. I have always questioned painting parts on the sprues , too much touch up involved ! Not to mention , the marks from the touchup aren't going to be as smooth as the overall painted surface . Harry ...... When you start painting the inside of the engine blocks , please let me know . It's off to the Geritol Asylum for you ! Again !
  18. For a standard paint job ( body , hood , front and rear valance ) 2 - 1/2 ounce bottles will do just fine . You might have a bit left over , pour it back into one of the bottles and it will keep for quite some time . The same ratio is used when using the clear coat .
  19. John , You are spraying too far away from the body , move in closer with the airbrush . Wet sand the body back down and start over , this time with closer sweeps of the airbrush !
  20. Don't you dare , Virgil ! Uh Uh ! Wasn't me ! Was it ?
  21. Go to my website and look for the '56 Delray pro street or the ' 40 Ford sedan , both are done up in that particular color .
  22. Shoot it with Testors Stop Light Red Metallic ! I believe it will be exactly what you are looking for .
